The SL Series of CNC lathes is the culmination of extensive design and realworld testing aimed at making Haas lathes the finest available. At present, more than 18,000 highperformance Haas turning centers are installed worldwide, proving their capabilities in machine shops every day. The addition of the Toolroom line and GT Series open up new possibilities and provide additional capabilities. With these machines, we have raised CNC turning to new levels of reliability, ease and productivity. Haas CNC turning centers include such innovations as massive headstock castings with symmetric ribs for rigidity and stability; large tailstock castings with a twopiece design for easy realignment; embedded chip trays for improved sealing and efficient chip removal; increasedvolume, rollout coolant tanks; and doublewall doors riding on precision bearings for smooth, reliable operation. 2 MODELS: GT10 GT20 SL10 SL20 SL20 APL SL30 SL40 SL40L TL15 TL25 Special Turret Design T h e turrets for Haas SL Series turning centers are finishmachined as a u n i t completely assembled with the coupling, gearbox and drive system. Keying off the turret's centerline, all critical features of each station are machined using singleaxis moves, and then the turret is indexed to the next station. This ensures the absolute concentricity of each station with the turret's true center. Compared to machining the turret before assembly, this reduces positioning variation from tool to tool by more than 90%. The result is easier job set up, higher accuracy and better repeatability. Reduced Tool Position Variation More Than 90% 5 Special Turret Design OnTheFly Indexing This standard feature allows tool changes on the fly as the axes retract from the part. Combined with highspeed rapid movements, this results in faster tool changes and shorter cycle times by reducing noncutting time. Improve your cycle times by keeping the machine in constant motion. THREE TYPES OF TURRET 1 Haas SL Series turning centers come standard with a BOLTON TOOL TURRET that provides superrigid mounting of turning tools and boring bars. This turret accepts tools around the perimeter, and has an equal number of standard radial slots on the face for mounting turning tools in either the right or lefthand direction. The optional HAAS VDI TURRET accepts standard VDI 40 tools, including axial and radial live tools when combined with the versatile live tooling option. Dualspindle TL15 and TL25 models feature the VB HYBRID TURRET a 12station turret that accepts VDI 40 tools (including live tools), as well as standard bolton tools. The turret has 6 VDI stations and 6 bolton stations (both radial slots for turning tools and perimeter stations for ID tools). The VB turret is optional on the SL20, SL30 and SL40. 1 Turret type may affect maximum turning diameter. The VDI turret is standard in Europe. Specifications subject to change without notice. See illustrations at left. 7 Live Tooling Live Tooling with C Axis The Haas live tooling option accepts standard VDI 40 axial or radial driven tools to perform secondary operations milling, drilling, flatting and tapping on the face of the part and around the diameter. The option includes a full C axis that provides interpolated bidirectional motion at precise speeds and feeds for part positioning and repeatability. A powerful hydraulic brake locks the main spindle during secondary operations, and disengages for turning and indexing. Live tooling requires the VDI or VB Hybrid turret. Simple, Modular Live Tool Drive System The live tooling drive system is a simple, modular design with the motor outside of the tool turret mechanism. This simplifies maintenance and service, and is robust and reliable. HighTorque Live Tool Option Peak Torque Continuous Torque 200 Torque (inlb) HighTorque Option torque increase over standard live tools. 150 100 50 0 RPM 1,500 1,000 2,000 2,500 3,000 +50% 8 CAXIS MOTION Eliminate secondary operations and increase your productivity by adding the ability to mill parts on your turning center. The C axis provides highprecision (±0.01 degree) bidirectional spindle motion that is fully interpolated with X and/or Z motion. It is servo driven through a backgear reduction to provide outstanding torque for precision milling. Speeds are programmable from 0.1 to 60 rpm, and Cartesiantopolar interpolation allows programming of face machining operations using traditional X and Y coordinates. Cartesiantopolar coordinate programming converts X,Y position commands into rotary Caxis and linear Xaxis moves, which greatly reduces the amount of code required to command complex moves. In the polar coordinate system, milling a straight line on the face of the part would require many points to define the path, but in Cartesian, only the end points are necessary. Spindle Orientation This option enables orientation of the main spindle for automatically loading nonround bar stock (hex, square, etc.) via a bar feeder. An M19 specified in the part program orients the spindle to within ±0.1 degree, with a repeatability of ±0.045 degree. Spindle orientation is included in the Live Tooling option, and is standard on APL, dualspindle models and EU machines. Axial Mill/Drill Live Tools The live tooling option accepts radial and axial driven toolholders. These tools can be used on both the VDI turret and the VB Hybrid turret. Radial Mill/Drill 9 Rigid Foundation Massive CastIron Construction Cast iron is more expensive to buy and machine, but it provides up to 10 times the damping capacity of steel. That's why Haas uses cast iron for all major components. Castings are reinforced internally with heavy ribs to resist flex and damp vibrations, and each casting is thoroughly inspected prior to machining to ensure it is free of flaws. SL Series lathe castings feature heavy symmetric ribs that increase rigidity and improve thermal stability. Massive headstock and tailstock castings further increase rigidity, ensuring high accuracy and precise repeatability. All structural components are optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) to produce the most rigid designs. Specifications subject to change without notice. Not responsible for typographical errors. 10 1 Setup, 5 Sides surfaced, drilled and tapped All Haas base castings are machined on stateoftheart, 5side CNC machines. Each casting is completely machined, drilled, tapped and inspected in a single setup, which provides higher accuracies and smoother production. Our ability to precisely machine all critical features of each casting eliminates alignment errors in final assembly. Highaccuracy inprocess inspection guarantees that every casting meets our stringent quality standards. AntiFlex, TorqueTube Base Casting* Our unique, specially designed, Haas torquetube base casting yields superior rigidity and gives the most antiflex properties of any base design. It's so stable, in fact, that the machine will cut accurately with one leveling screw removed, and no special foundation is required for installation. *Except the SL10, GT Series and Toolroom Lathes. Rigid, CostEffective Design Solutions. 11 Main Spindle Features Powerful Vector Spindle Drives The Haasdesigned vector spindle drive uses the same technology as our brushless servo motors to provide peak performance and speed control under heavy cutting loads. This true closedloop system optimizes the slip angle between the rotor and stator of the spindle motor to double lowspeed torque and acceleration, resulting in the most powerful spindle output ever. These drives allow you to push the spindle to 150 percent of the motor's continuous horsepower for 15 minutes, and to 200 percent for 5 minutes. That's more performance headroom than any other drive on the market. Standard Horsepower (optional hp and rpm upgrades not shown) 60 Horsepower 50 40 30 20 10 Please see pages 30 34 for complete Toolroom Lathe specifications. Model GT10 GT20 SL10 SL20 SL30 SL40 SL40XP TL15 TL25 TL1 TL2 TL3 TL3HT TL3B TL4 12 Built for Extra Torque This Haasbuilt, twospeed gearbox is standard on the SL40, SL40L, SL30 Big Bore, SL30L Big Bore and TL25 Big Bore. It is optional on the SL30 and TL25. Designed and manufactured entirely inhouse to ensure superior quality and precision, Haas gears are CNC machined and hobbed out of 8620 steel, then heattreated to 60 Rc and precision ground to AGMA Class 13 quality. The standard gearbox* yields 1,400 ftlb of spindle torque at 150 rpm for lowspeed, heavy cutting and allows speeds to 2,400 rpm for finish cuts and turning aluminum. *The optional gearbox for the SL30 and TL25 yields 850 ftlb of torque at 250 rpm, and allows speeds to 3,400 rpm. Gearbox shown with cutaway for illustration purposes. Spindle Options OnTheFly WYEDELTA Switching Most Haas lathes feature the Haas DualDrive system: A dualwinding motor (WYEDELTA), and an electronic switch to change between the windings. Automatically selecting the best winding for lowspeed cutting and the best winding for highspeed cutting yields higher torque over a wider rpm range. Onthefly winding change provides the wide power range needed for constant surface speed cuts. 5,000rpm / 30hp Spindle For highspeed turning of small parts, the 5,000rpm/ 30hp option for the SL20 and TL15 reduces cycle times and allows high surface feedrates. The 30hp vector drive spindle provides fast acceleration to full speed, and yields more torque at higher rpm. 7,000rpm / 20hp Spindle When even higher spindle speeds are needed, a 7,000rpm/20hp option is available for the SL20 and TL15. This 20hp vector drive spindle has an A25 spindle nose, and comes with a 5" chuck with 1.3" bar capacity. It accelerates quickly to top speed, and yields the high surface feedrates needed for fine finishes on small parts. PEAK POWER 55hp ExtraPerformance Option RPM Typical power curve Enhanced power range with onthefly WyeDelta Available for the SL40 and SL40L Long Bed, this option boosts spindle power to 55 hp, with 2,100 ftlb of torque. It includes a larger servomotor on the Z axis for a maximum thrust of 7,847 lb. Some items shown in this brochure are optional. Please contact your local distributor for assistance. 13 Motion Control Thermal Stability/ Temp Track Our temperaturetracking system uses a probe attached to the ballscrew nut and electronic modeling to compensate for thermal growth. TempTrack monitors variations in ballscrew temperature, and uses a sophisticated control algorithm to electronically compensate for thermal expansion. This ensures that the machine maintains accuracy and repeatability throughout the day. DoubleAnchored Ballscrews Haas uses only premiumquality ballscrews and guides from the world's top manufacturers. Although more expensive, their premium quality is the only way to achieve the high accuracy and long life that our customers demand. Our ballscrews are anchored at both ends and inspected for 100% parallelism to the axis guides. Preloaded ball nuts eliminate backlash. Specifications subject to change without notice. Not responsible for typographical errors. 14 Recirculating Ball Guideways Haas uses recirculating ball guideways for each axis of every CNC turning center. These guideways are preloaded for zero clearance, and provide full loadcarrying capacity in all directions. They consume less power, do not require adjustment and are proven to outperform sliding box ways for accuracy and speed. Each guideway is lubricated automatically to guarantee long life. Brushless Servomotors Box Way Recirculating Ball Guideway Required Clearance Zero Clearance Recirculating Ball Guideways Outperform Box Ways Recirculating ball guideways are preloaded to provide zero clearance between the moving surfaces. This increases rigidity and stiffness, while providing higher accuracy and reliability. Box ways require clearance between the moving surfaces in order to operate. Recirculating ball guides have a very low coefficient of friction, which allows faster movements without sacrificing repeatability or positioning accuracy. Box ways have a high coefficient of friction, which results in stickslip effects that can lead to machine errors. Haas uses stateoftheart brushless servomotors that offer more torque in a smaller frame than almost any other motor available. These highperformance servos provide more power for heavy cuts, and higher acceleration/deceleration rates to reduce cycle times. With no brushes to wear and generate dust, maintenance is reduced and reliability is substantially increased. These compact motors also run cooler, have a higher duty rating and perform longer than brushtype motors. Automatic Lubrication The Haas automatic lubrication system meters and distributes oil to guideways and ballscrews as the machine operates. This ensures that all critical components are lubricated with the correct amount of oil at all times, saving time and reducing maintenance costs. Haas DirectCoupled Servomotors Our servomotors are directly coupled to the ballscrews with steel disc couplings to eliminate windup even under severe loading. This results in greatly improved positioning accuracy, and more accurate threading and contouring. Unlike belt or rubbercoupled joints, our couplings don't wear out or lose accuracy over time. 15 Quick Setup & Part Support Programmable Hydraulic Tailstock The Haas fully programmable hydraulic tailstock can be activated via the part program, or controlled directly by the operator with the standard foot switch. Closedloop positioning allows you to stop the tailstock anywhere along its travel. Massive ribbed castings provide superior rigidity, and a twopiece design simplifies realignment if required. (The optional tailstock for the SL10 has manual coarse adjustment and a hydraulic quill.) Simple threestep setup procedure saves time and lets you fine tune the working position of the tailstock. Retract, advance and hold point are easily specified, and the system also has an automatic missingpart detection feature. Specifications subject to change without notice. Not responsible for typographical errors. 16 BigBore Capacity The Haas Big Bore option provides larger bar capacity and more power without moving up to a larger machine. For the SL10, SL20 and SL30, this is done by taking the spindle and drive system off the next larger machine and putting it on the smaller platform. The SL20 Big Bore, for example, gets the SL30's drive system, and the SL30 Big Bore gets the SL40's drive system. The SL40 Big Bore maintains the same drive system, but with higher ratio gearing, and upgrades to an A211 spindle with up to 7.0" bar capacity (6.5" with a draw tube). SL40 ExtraPerformance Option Available for the SL40 and SL40L Long Bed, this option boosts spindle power to 55 hp, with 2,100 ftlb of torque. Our augerstyle chip conveyor removes chips from the machine automatically, while also compressing them and wringing out the coolant. The auger is activated by M code, and reverses automatically if a jam occurs. 24" (610 mm)* * SL(91104 is 36" mm). Optional Chip Conveyor For highproduction turning of difficult materials (such as tool steel or cast iron) a belttype conveyor is available to clear chips from your machine. Chips can be discharged into a 55gallon (208 liter) drum. 20 Coolant System Features Coolant Level Sensor A mechanical sensor in the coolant tank allows you to monitor the coolant level directly from the control screen, preventing damaged tools and saving time. RollOut Coolant Tank Our coolant tanks easily roll out from under the machine to facilitate cleaning. A separate chip basket and liftout screen prevent chips from reaching the pump, and all electrical and hose connections at the tank can be removed by hand. The lid and pump can be lifted up and out without removing any fasteners. The SL10 has a builtin coolant tank. Not available on SL10, GT10 or GT20. Auto Jet Blast An Mcode activated air blast clears chips and coolant from the chuck and workpiece while the doors are closed. HighPressure Coolant Our highpressure coolant systems provide up to 300 psi or 1,000 psi of coolant to the cutting edge for deephole drilling, heavy cuts, faster feedrates and better surface finishes. The standard HPC option provides up to 300 psi at a flow rate of 1.5 gallons per minute, and 250 psi at 4 gpm. The 1,000psi option (shown at left) has a max flow rate of 6 gpm, and requires separate (customersupplied) 3phase power. In both systems, actual pressure will vary with the diameter of the coolant passages in the tool. Auxiliary Coolant Filter This 25micron, #2 bagtype filter system removes contamination and minute particles from the coolant before they can be recirculated through the coolant pump. The filter is mandatory for HPCequipped machines, but may be used on nonHPC machines as well. It is included with the 1,000 psi coolant option. 21 Automated Operation Increase throughput by 200% or more. Features Allows unattended operation Flexible gripper configurations Up to 5.0" OD shafts Up to 7.0" OD disks Easy setup via the Haas control Loads/unloads parts in one trip Rotates parts for doubleended turning capability* SL20APL Automatic Parts Loader The Haas APL is a fully automatic lathe parts loader with opposing twojaw grippers. Two gripper configurations come standard: one for shaft work and one stacker system. The APL is programmed directly through the lathe's control, and operates in the background of normal turning operations to deliver nearcontinuous unattended machining. The APL's doublesided rotating gripper loads and unloads parts with a single trip to the spindle, or flips parts for doubleended turning. The APL is available only with a new SL20 lathe. See page 41 for APL specifications. * Shaft loader Simplified Setup APL setup has been vastly simplified through Haas' Intuitive Programming System, which guides the operator through the steps necessary to quickly program the APL. Answering simple questions, the operator enters basic information into the system by either positioning the part grippers and pushing a single button or entering basic numeric dimensions. All values are calculated automatically by the control, and the APL is ready to go. 22 Haas Servo Bar 300 Automatic Bar Feeder Designed to boost productivity and streamline turning operations, this servodriven bar feeder is built by Haas exclusively for Haas CNC lathes. It runs directly from the Haas control, making it the only "smart" bar feeder on the market. Unique features make setup and operation simple, like a large access door for spindle liner changeout and a single adjustment for setting bar diameter. All bar feed parameters are set at the lathe control. Unlike with other bar feeders, the bar feed interface and a set of spindle liners are included with the Servo Bar 300. See page 41 for bar feeder specifications. Haas Extruded Spindle Liners The patent pending Haas extruded spindle liners are an inexpensive, easily installed option that provides extra stability to bar stock during turning operations, resulting in better results. The innovative design allows a smaller liner to nest inside a larger one for fast setup, and easy changeover between different sized bar stock. The lightweight material and extruded design add very little mass to the rotating system, and a liner rack that mounts to the Haas Servo Bar 300 is available to keep liners organized when not in use. Parts Catcher For bar feed applications, or when using a bar puller, the parts catcher rotates into position to catch the finished part and direct it into a bin located on the front door. There's no need to stop the machine and open the door to retrieve parts. 23 Operator Convenience Auto Door This option opens and closes the machine's door automatically via the part program. This reduces operator fatigue during repetitive machining operations, increases operator productivity by up to 25% and allows for unattended operation when used with a robotic loader. Not available in some countries. DoorActivated HighIntensity Lighting Dual halogen lights provide bright, even illumination of the work area for part inspection, job setup and changeovers. Lights turn on and off automatically when doors open and close, or can be operated via a manual switch. Convenient Storage Box This covered box provides convenient storage for toolholders, cutting tools and accessories right at the machine, eliminating the need for a separate tool cart. Note Pad & Disk Storage This handy bracket on the side of the control pendant holds a pad of paper for jotting notes, and has slots for holding pencils and storing up to 6 floppy disks. Storage Area Another operatorfocused feature is this convenient "glove box" below the pendant. The hinged door folds down to form a handy shelf, and closes securely to keep items out of sight. 24 Remote Jog Handle Extend your reach into the work envelope to simplify setup when working on our larger turning centers. Can be used to move all axes, as well as override spindle speeds and feedrates, singleblock scroll through programs and more. Part Hoist Boom This convenient crane arm allows the operator to easily load raw materials and unload finished parts. It has a 300 lb (136 kg) capacity. For TL25, SL30, SL30L, SL40 and SL40L only. Hoist and trolley not included. Tool Presetter The manual toolprobe arm swings down for fast tool setting. Touch each tool tip to the probe to automatically enter offsets into the control. Work Probing The Haas work probing option incorporates a turret probe, receiver and macros. It can be used for rapid firstoff part inspection, inprocess reporting and monitoring unattended machining operations. It can also be used to update work offsets to account for tool wear and ensure ultimate part accuracy. Some items shown in this brochure are optional. The Haas Intuitive Programming System is a proprietary conversational operating system that makes cutting parts and creating programs nearly effortless. Using an easytoread format with fullcolor graphics, the IPS guides the operator through the steps necessary to machine a part. The operator simply chooses an operation, sets tool offsets, and then enters basic dimension information. Default values for feed per revolution, spindle speed and depth of cut are entered automatically by the control, but can be modified by the operator. Once all necessary information is entered, pushing Cycle Start performs the operation. A Recorder function allows multiple operations to be recorded and saved, so that the information can be played back to duplicate the part. Operations that would be difficult or impossible on a manual machine radii, tapers, profiles, grooving, threading, rigid tapping are all possible on Haas lathes without knowledge of Gcode programming. Help menus are available directly onscreen, and a dryrun graphics feature allows operators to check their work before running a part. The IPS software is available for our complete line of turning centers. It is standard on our Toolroom machines, and optional on our SL Series machines. Powerful features: Programs created in the Intuitive Programming System can be saved and rerun at a later date, or transferred to any other Haas turning center as standard Gcode. IPS powerful, easytouse threading features: · Machine tapered threads based on the amount of taper per foot. · Choose right or lefthand threads. · Chamfer out or straight pullout at thread's end. · Thread repair operations for straight, tapered, righthand or lefthand, inside or outside diameter threads, without the need to orient the spindle to a known position. IPS Shape Profiler: · Allows the operator to create a part profile, and then select how it should be machined. · Choose from horizontal, vertical or profile roughing techniques. · Create a basic shape pointtopoint, and then add radii or chamfers by simply inserting those features onscreen at the desired positions. Hard Drive with Ethernet Interface Store and transfer data between your Haas and a network or PC with the Ethernet connection. Program files are easily transferred to and from memory or the internal hard drive, and large files can be accessed by multiple machines. Highspeed data transfers allow DNC of large files at up to 1,000 blocks per second. Compatible with Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and XP. Also works with server versions NT 4.0, 2000 and 2003. IPX/SPX or TCP/IP protocol. Easily set up from the control screen. 36 1 Use the top tab menu to select a cutting operation to perform. 2 Further define your specific cutting operation by choosing from the lower set of tabs. 3 Fill in the requested information and press Cycle Start. Using plain language, simple graphics and easytofollow steps, the Haas Intuitive Programming System guides the operator through the steps necessary to machine a part. Memory Upgrade to 16 MB Allows loading of large programs directly into the machine, rather than from DNC, for faster feedrates. Batterypowered, highspeed static RAM is faster than dynamic RAM and retains data even when the power is turned off. 8 M Functions Adds 8 additional M functions for a total of up to 13 user interfaces. Use these to activate probes, auxiliary pumps, clamping devices, part loaders, etc. USB Port USB port allows the use of customersupplied ZipTM drives, floppy drives or flash memory devices. Memory Lock Keyswitch Locks memory to prevent program editing by unauthorized personnel. It can also be used to lock settings, parameters, offsets and macro variables.
