How to Build a Successful STEM / Manufacturing Program
STEM-related fields are going to dominate careers in the future, but how do you create a program that prepares students for success? At SkillsUSA in Kentucky this year, Haas Automation partnered with an HTEC program in upstate New York to help accomplish this – by holding seminars for skilled-trades teachers from around the country on building successful STEM / Manufacturing programs.
Pine Bush High School in Troy New York is a nationally recognized program, and a model for cross-curricular STEM / Manufacturing Programs. Pine Bush utilizes 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining to enhance student learning. Aaron Hopmayer and Kenneth Marshall of Pine Bush High School worked with participants to:
· Identify a purpose or needs for their STEM / Manufacturing program
· Identify possible participants for a professional board
· Brainstorm the inner workings of a program that would fit their needs
· Identify areas of STEM / Manufacturing focus and learner outcomes
· Identify possible strategic industry and academic partnerships
· Discuss concerns, questions, and answers
Furthermore, participants learned how to create successful STEM / Manufacturing programs that utilize advanced manufacturing technologies. In their presentation, Aaron and Kenneth included educational videos and real classroom projects. In addition, participants learned how to set up a Makerspace in their school or college, to support students and staff. Handouts were provided to participants to take back to their schools or colleges.
