Since 1994, Samson Manufacturing has become a leading manufacturer of high-quality firearms parts and accessories, and a trusted U.S. Government Defense contractor (Cage 037R7). 

Initially, running a hybrid production facility and general job shop posed challenges to the shop’s total capacity. A dedicated Haas 5-axis UMC paired with a pallet pool proved to be the ideal solution. This setup allowed Samson to increase their spindle utilization by mixing customers’ parts with their own production runs. General Manager Jon Bernashe shares how the addition of this 5-axis pallet pool system allowed Samson to triple their normal output, leading them to order their second UMC with pallet pool right after the first had hit the shop floor.

Founded in 1995, DesignWerkes has become a world-class manufacturer of power conversion and accessory power systems for hybrid buses, as well as avionics systems for commercial and military aircraft. Staff reductions stemming from the COVID pandemic led DesignWerkes to look for ways to do more with less. By combining operations on their Haas 5-axis UMCs, they were able to optimize their processes, while increasing accuracy, and freeing up their Haas verticals and horizontals for final operations. This has also reduced their scrap rate to below 1%.

While developing the power systems for the next generation of hybrid buses, they discovered that, by using high-speed machining and the 5-axis UMCs, they could produce the power-system chassis from solid aluminum billet, rather than from castings. This has provided significant savings over the upfront costs of tooling for castings, while delivering a superior product to their customer.

Borg Design is a high-mix, low-volume production shop that manufactures intricate and complex parts. According to Andrew Borg, President of Borg Design, Inc., their VF-11 has “opened up the opportunity for us to get work we never, ever would have tried to get before.” Following this success, they expanded their shop to include a second VF-11, as well as a VF-9 and a VF-6.
