Rock Valley College | Haas Customer Success Story

 

Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois, is working directly with the Winnebago County Sherriff’s department to provide CNC training opportunities for inmates, which includes earning NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) certification. The program is called TechWorks Training Initiative, and includes hands-on training on four new Haas CNC Desktop Mills located within the county jail.

The program allows inmates to participate in a 7-week training program that integrates job-readiness, classroom training, and hands-on training. The goal of the program is to increase employment opportunities for inmates upon release, as well as lower the recidivism rate. The NIMS credentials that students can earn include Measurement, Materials and Safety, and CNC Lathe or CNC Mill Operator Level I.

“This is about changing paradigms to make this community stronger,” said Christopher Lewis, RVC Vice President of Workforce Development, “and also increasing the workforce talent that we have, which gives us the ability to recruit other businesses, and makes us stronger as a community.”

HFO Chicago is proud to partner with Rock Valley College and Winnebago County Sherriff’s department on the TechWorks Training Initiative. Providing access and opportunities for the students will help fill the skills gap in the region, and lower recidivism rates. In fact, studies have shown that recidivism rates drop up to 30%, when inmates receive vocational training while incarcerated. Even with COVID-19 restrictions in place, Winnebago County Sherriff’s Department’s goal is to have 56 inmates complete the training program in the first year.
