The Steady Rest Provision provides the necessary mounting platform and hydraulic lines to install an aftermarket steady rest to provide increased support for turning long shafts. The mounting platform accepts a variety of aftermarket steady rests, both automatic and manual. It is positioned manually along the tailstock linear guides, and locks into place with a mechanical brake. The steady rest provision requires the Tailstock option.

NOTE: ST-45 Series machines do not include a hydraulic power unit (HPU), unless you order the 18" Hydraulic Chuck Kit or the Steady Rest Provision.

Steady Rest Operation

The steady rest provision is only available as an option in conjunction with the tailstock, and does not include the gripper or mounting bracket. The platform mounting holes accept a variety of aftermarket steady rest grippers.

The grippers can be opened/closed with the supplied foot pedal, or using M147 (open) and M146 (close) in the part program or MDI. The grippers can also be manually actuated from the DEVICE manager, using the F2 key from the control.

Do not exceed the recommended maximum pressure for the steady rest
Control the steady rest gripping force by adjusting the hydraulic pressure at the hydraulic pressure unit (HPU)
The workpiece must have a smooth, concentric diameter in order to be clamped properly; do not put rough material in the steady rest jaws
It is the responsibility of the steady rest provider to ensure their pieces fit inside the machine work envelope
Travel limit details can be found on the machine layout drawing, which shows where the steady rest will be installed

Mounting Platform Bolt Pattern

The mounting platform bolt pattern will vary, based on the machine on which it is installed. The bolt pattern consists of 4 equally spaced threaded holes. The threaded holes are 3/4-10 UNC-2B X 1" (25 mm) deep.

For ST-20L through ST-35L models (including Y-axis variants), the pattern is 10.938" (277.8 mm) X 3.25" (82.55 mm)

For ST-40 through ST-55 models (including long-bed variants), the pattern is 14.625" (371.47 mm) X 3.25" (82.55 mm)
