Grinding Troubleshooting

Symptom Possible Cause Corrective Action
Chatter Wheel out of balance  Re-balance wheel on mounting. Re-balance wheel after truing. Run wheel without coolant to remove excess water. After removing wheel from machine, store on side to prevent water from settling at lower edge of wheel
Wheel out of round True before and after balancing. True sides to face.
Grinding wheel is blunt Dress the wheel again
Dresser alignment Refer to the Dresser Alignment section below
Oil shortage on ways Inspect lubrication tank oil level / adjust oiling cycle timing
Wrong abrasive used Change wheel abrasive
Accuracy errors Machine leveling Re-level the machine and tighten locking nuts
Feed and speed are too high or low Adjust feeds and speeds through the control
Magnetic chuck surface Grind the magnetic chuck surface
Spindle does not run Electromagnetic chuck is not on

Inspect magnetic chuck control in the electrical panel and verify functionality.

Inspect control panel switch is connected and functional.
Wheel guard is not closed properly Close the wheel guard properly and tighten the thumb screw.
Hydraulic pump is not on

Verify oil level and retry.

Inspect and reset electric panel breakers.

Verify incoming voltage to the hydraulic pump motor and panel button.
X-axis does not actuate Incorrect phasing Refer to the Electrical Installation section in the 4.1 Installation chapter in this manual.
Y-axis does not move automatically but moves when commanded manually Proximity sensor not triggereing Inspect the proximity sensor is triggereing and is set at the correct distance to the direction switch. The proximity switch can be accessed from underneath the top saddle of the machine after joggign the Y-axis towards the front of the machine.

Dresser Alignment

This pattern is due to the dresser not being square with the grinding wheel. When the grinding wheel is dressed it becomes tapered which causes uneven contact to the work piece.
