Karlsen & Solbakken Maskinering AS | Haas Customer Success Story
Karlsen & Solbakken Maskinering AS was established in Skien in 1996 by Sindre Solbakken and Jarle H. Karlsen, then in the evening in a disused slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Skien. After a couple of years, they had to move into larger premises, and after a few more years, they established themselves in their own premises at the Rødmyr industrial area outside Skien in 2004.
In 2016, the company moved again, now into a custom new building of as much as 3600 square meters. In 2018, the company had a turnover of NOK 30 million and a profit margin of over nine percent. Today, the workshop company has over 30 employees. The company already has 10 Haas machines in daily production.
Already in 2001, KSM bought its first Haasmaskin. This was a vertical machining center of the type Haas VF-4. The machine is still in daily production and the tolerances are almost at the same height as the day the machine was rolled onto the floor for the first time. Over the years, Haasmaskiner has steadily rolled in at KSM.
For a long period, new Haas machines came in every year, and now we will soon have to expand to fill in more - says Sindre Solbakken.
Machines and services
We are strong with a large range of machines. We have machines from most categories from Haas. Lathes, vertical milling machines, 5-axis machines and horizontal machines.
The company specializes in machining metal components for industrial customers. We have extensive experience and broad expertise in repairing hydraulics. We overtake everything in this segment and produce our own spare parts. In recent years, we have also become an integrated technology company with engineering, prototype development, production of tools, fixtures and jigs, robot cells, hydraulic cylinders and other components. KSM processes most types of steel and metals as well as plastic.
KSM has extensive experience in making fixtures and tools for other production companies.
- Since we also produce a number of varied products, from idea to mass production, we have become very good at clamping parts that are to be machined or processed in different ways.
- In many cases, the parts can be machined in one operation and thus save the customer several clamps during production which in turn will save a lot of time and costs. Unique parts that in combination with 5-axis milling in our Haas UMC-750SS give us enormous opportunities for design and not least cost savings for the customer.
In 2016, the company acquired Skien Verktøyindustri AS, thereby strengthening its position as a supplier of advanced components and tools, and in addition to wire cutters and grinding machines, it also came with another Haas machine.
The company has had great growth.
Even though we have customers from all over Norway, it is mostly local industry that has given us the growth. Since the start in 1996, we have gained a great deal of trust, which has constantly given us several assignments. We dare to be challenged and the customers seem to want to help develop us. It has given us many legs to stand on,
The machine park is also characterized by local cooperation.
With HMS Maskin located in Skien, it almost goes without saying that we have great advantages through the proximity, the solid competence, good products and the service apparatus this machine dealer can offer us. The company currently has as many as 10 Haasmaskiner in daily production. These machines have shown very good quality, low maintenance costs and definitely a brand we will continue with.
