BMT45 Main Turret Shaft - Replacement

Introduction

This procedure should be referenced when replacing a BMT45 Main Turret Shaft.

Tools Required :

  • Dial Indicator
  • T-0178

Servie Kit :

  • 93-4568 TURRET PISTON ASSY SVC KIT BMT45

Lifting requirements

  • The turret disk weighs approximately 100 lbs and requires a crane to lift safely

Important : Ensure the piston assembly recieved has red piston springs before installation. If the turret assembly arrives without red springs Contact Haas Service.

Inspection

Warning : Do not replace the shaft assembly into a damaged turret housing if it has excessive damage to the illustrated area.

Inserting a new shaft assembly into a damaged housing will result in premature wear on quad-rings and unclamping issues. 

Measure 1.50 inches (38.1 mm) from the face of the bore to determine if the damage will affect the replacement shaft. If there is any damage less than 1.50 inches (38.1 mm) ensure that it is stoned so that it does not damage the replacement shaft.

Contact Haas Service if excessive damage is discovered.

Replacement

Remove all driven tools from the turret.

Index the turret to pocket 1.

Turn off the main air supply to the machine.

Press [POWER OFF]

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

To access the gearbox, remove the following items in this order:

  1. The turret front cover and live drive alignment bracket.
  2. Remove the live drive motor.
  3. Remove the live drive motor mount.
  4. Remove the clamp screw [4].
  5. Install a 3/8-16 bolt [5] in the jack screw hole next to the clamp bolt [4]. Apply just enough torque to spread the torque arm so it can slide off the torque tube.
  6. Remove the key from the torque tube.

Note : In the event of a live tool crash the torque arm may be difficult to remove. A pulley puller may be used. If the torque arm still cannot be removed cut it off the torque tube with a grinder..

Remove the snap ring [1] from the torque tube.

Remove the torque arm springs [2].

Remove alignment brackets [3].

Remove the (5) bolts from the retaining ring and slide the live tooling drive out of the turret.

Remove shims.

Note : Number of shims will vary.

Before removing the rear cover tape a trash bag under the gearbox to minimize the mess.

Slowly pry the cover off to help control the grease flow.

Remove the following items: 

  1. Turret servo motor [1]
  2. Un-torque and remove the locknut [2] using T-0178
  3. Bearing [3]

Remove the following items in order:

  1. Motor mount, coupler, and worm gear
  2. The cluster gear, two washers, and spring
  3. Spur gear
  4. Turret

Important : Refer to BMT45 - Indexer Turret - Replacement for more information regarding turret removal.

Remove main shaft from gearbox.

Clean the housing thoroughly. 

Grease locations highlighted in red with 99-1792 GREASE MOBIL XHP 322 5% MOLY.

Install new main shaft and screw down.

Clean, re-grease (if needed), and reinstall the following items in order: 

  1. The turret onto the main shaft
  2. Spur gear
  3. Cluster gear, two washers, and spring
  4. Worm gear, motor mount, and coupler 

Note : The turret holds the shaft in place while the locknut is torque down in the following step.

Clean and reinstall the following items:

  1.  Turret servo motor
  2.  Bearings
  3.  Locknut, torque down at 100 ft-lbs using T-0178

Reinstall the rear cover with new gasket.

Torque bolts all bolts down per HAAS TORQUE CHART.

Remove the turret and loosen all bolts holding the main shaft in place. Tighten down two bolts across from each other, similar to the one highlighted in red. 

Use a dial indicator and sweep the housing OD to check the runout of the shaft. Adjust the shaft, using a pry bar, until the runout is within spec. NTE .002 in TIR (0.0508 mm). 

Torque all bolts per HAAS TORQUE CHART. 

Recheck the runout to insure it is still in spec.

Reinstall the turret.

Slide clean live tooling drive and shims into the turret. Torque bolts in a star pattern.

Note : Number of shims will vary.

Install the snap ring [1] on the torque tube.

Install the torque arm springs [2].

Install the alignment brackets [3].

Fill the gearbox with 1 quart of lubricant through the fill plug [1] until it spills out. Refer to Haas Lubrication Table for the most up to date oil specification.

Install the following items in this order:

  1. Install the key [1] into the torque tube.
  2. Install a 3/8-16 bolt [2] in the jack screw hole next to the clamp bolt [3]. Apply just enough torque to spread the torque arm so it can slide on the torque tube.
  3. Install the clamp screw [3], torque bolt per HAAS TORQUE CHART, and remove the jack screw [2].
  4. Install the live drive motor mount.
  5. Install the live drive motor.
  6. The turret front cover and live drive alignment bracket.

Follow  the Turret Tool Changer Alignment and Live Tool Drive Alignment sections in the BMT45 Turret - Live Tool Drive - Alignment procedure.

 

Verification

Unlock the main circuit breaker. Set the main circuit breaker to the ON position.

Turn on the main air supply to the machine.

Press [POWER ON]

Clamp and unclamp the turret at pockets 1, 4, 7, and 10 to verify that there is no binding or interference between parts.
