BMT45 Live Drive Alignment Video

The following service video shows how to align the Live Drive on a BMT45 turret.

Note: This service video is for reference only and does not replace the written procedure.

Introduction

This procedure shows how to align a BMT45 turret Live Tool Drive.

Required tools:

  • T-0159 BMT45 LT POCKET ALIGNMENT TOOL
  • T-0147 BMT45 LT OUTPUT SHAFT ALIGNMENT TOOL
  • Dial indicator
  • Service USB Key

This Document Applies to the following Service Kits:

  • 93-4563 BMT45 LT Shim Kit
  • 93-4467 BMT45 LIVE DRIVE REPLACEMENT KIT

Note: If the original live drive hardware is SHCS (P/N: 40-16385), replace this hardware with 5 BHCS (P/N 40-0030). The updated hardware is in the the service kit listed above.

Turret Tool Changer Alignment

1

Remove all tools from the turret.

Change parameter 9.019 to FALSE.

Set parameter 9.078 TT_AXIS TOOL CHANGE OFFSET to 0.

Set parameter 9.140 TT_AXIS GRID OFFSET to 0.

Press [POSITION]  and make the TT-axis visible by pressing [ALTER] then select the TT-axis and press [ENTER].

[Zero Return] the TT axis, ignore any alarms. Press [DIAGNOSTICS] to get to the FACTORY parameters tab. Type TT and press [F4] to set the grid offset. [Zero Return] the TT axis.

In [MDI] command an M43 to unclamp the turret. Handle jog the TT axis until pocket 1 is in position, visually align the coolant nozzle. Press [ESTOP] to clamp the turret and verify the turret is fully seated.

Press [POSITION] and rotate the TT-axis motor coupler by hand to one end of travel. Record the TT-axis position. Rotate the TT-axis coupler to the other end of travel. Record the TT-axis position. Rotate the TT-axis motor coupler to the middle of the two positions.

Example: (174.780 - 174.610)/2 + 174.610 = 174.695

Press [DIAGNOSTICS] to get back to parameters. Type TT and press [F2] to set the tool change offset.

Press [ATC FWD], verify that the load is always below 5% when the turret is clamped at each tool position.

Change parameter 9.019 to TRUE.

Live Tool Drive Shim Check

1

Older versions of the BMT45 have one alignment pin [1] while newer machines have two alignment pins [2].

This procedure shows a single pin BMT45 assembly for reference. The same applies to dual pin BMT45 assemblies unless otherwise specified.

2

Index to pocket 1.

Remove all tools from the turret.

Install indicator base tool on the Live Tool drive shaft then the T-0159 alignment block on pocket 1.

Check the alignment in the Z axis.

If the indicator reading exceeds .002" then shims [1] will need to be added or removed.

If the alignment in Z is correct proceed to the BMT Live Tool Drive Alignment section.

3

To adjust the shim size, remove the following items in this order:

1. The turret front cover and live drive alignment bracket.

2. Remove the live drive motor.

3. Remove the live drive motor mount.

4. Remove the clamp screw.

5. Remove torque arm.

Note: If torque arm is difficult to remove, install a 3/8-16 bolt [5] in the jack screw hole next to the clamp bolt [4]. Apply just enough torque to spread the torque arm so it can slide off the torque tube.

6. Remove the key from the torque tube.

Note: In the event of a live tool crash the torque arm may be difficult to remove. A pulley puller may be used. If the torque arm still cannot be removed cut it off the torque tube with a grinder.

4

Remove the torque arm springs [1].

Remove the snap ring [2] from the torque tube.

5

Remove the indicator base from the live tool drive.

Remove the (5) bolts from the retaining ring  and slide the live tooling drive out of the turret.

Clean the bore and add or remove shims as needed.

Note: The shim amount added or removed should be half of the indicator reading in the Z-Axis.

Note: When replacing a Live Tool Drive, install new shims. Shim part numbers are:

  • 59-1975 - .004"
  • 59-1976 - .005"
  • 59-1977 - .003"
  • 59-2189 - .007"
  • 59-2191 - .010".

Note: Place the thinner shims between the thicker shims. Example: If the shim amount is 0.023". Then place a .003" shim between two .010" shims.

Re-install the drive.

Note: If the original live drive hardware is SHCS (P/N: 40-16385), replace this hardware with 5 BHCS (P/N 40-0030).

Use a star pattern to torque the (5) mounting bolts in the retaining ring to 10 ft-lbs. Repeat star pattern at 20 ft-lbs.

6

Install the following items in this order:

  • Torque arm springs [1].
  • Snap ring [2].
  • key [3] into the torque tube.
  • Torque arm.

Note: If torque arm is difficult to install, use a 3/8-16 bolt [5] in the jack screw hole next to the clamp bolt [4]. Apply just enough torque to spread the torque arm so it can slide on the torque tube.

Torque the clamp bolt [5] to half of the amount on the HAAS TORQUE CHART, tap the torque arm till it's pressed up against the snap ring, then torque to the full amount listed on the chart.

The torque arm should sit flat against the snap ring.

Live Tool Drive Alignment

1

One Pin Alignment:

With the indicator base installed, loosen the outside bolts [1] and snug the center bolt [2].

Rotate the drive until the T.I.R. is less than .002".

The drive can be adjusted with the adjustment screws or by hand.

Torque the the center bolt [2], back off the adjustment screws [3][4], then torque the outside bolts [1].

Tighten the adjustment screws and lock nuts [3][4].
