Spindle - Balance Instructions

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to balance a Haas spindle on the following milling machines:

  1. 30T and 40T Vertical Belt Driven Spindle Head
  2. 30T and 40T Vertical Inline Driven Spindle Head
  3. 40T Horizontal Inline Driven Spindle Head
  4. 50T Horizontal Belt Driven Spindle Head
  5. 50T Verical Belt Driven Spindle Head

 

This procedure can be used on the following service kits:

  • 93-2867 SERVICE TOOL, SPINDLE BALANCING HARDWARE KIT

Tools Required:

  • 93-2262 IFM ANALYZER 120/230V 2014
  • Thread Lock Compound
  • Balance Tool-Holder

 

Spindle - Balance Instructions

For In-line spindles, loosen the motor bolts and run the spindle at 500 RPM to float the motor into alignment. Torque the bolts as the motor is running.

For belt-driven spindles, remove the tool release piston (TRP).

Set up the vibration analyzer. Refer to Vibration Analysis - RS-232 Interface, or Vibration Analysis - Ethernet Interface.

Attach the sensor to the spindle housing per the instructions.

Do this step for a vertical 30 and 40 taper spindle:

To balance the spindle, put a 0.35g set screw into one of these locations:

  • a hole in the sprocket [1] of a belt-drive machine
  • a hole in the guide release [2] of an inline-drive machine 

Operate the spindle at full RPM.

Note: Make sure a balanced tool-holder is in the spindle.

Do this step for a horizontal 40 and 50 taper spindle:

NOTE: For a horizontal 40T spindle, disconnect the spindle head's lower waycover and jog the spindle head to the top of travel. Underneath the spindle head casting, there is a cutout [1] for guide release access. 

To balance the spindle, put a set screw into a hole in the guide release [2] of both belt and inline drive machine.

Operate the spindle at full RPM.

Note: Make sure a balanced tool-holder is in the spindle.

Do this step for a vertical 50 taper spindle:

To balance the spindle, put a set screw into a hole in the guide release [1]. 

Operate the spindle at full RPM.

Note: Make sure a balanced tool-holder is in the spindle.

Examine the vibration plot to see if the displacement went down.

Remove the set screw and move it to the next hole.

Do this until you find a balance hole that makes the displacement go down to the lowest point.

Increase the weight of the screw until you reach the lowest possible reading on the displacement plot.

Do this step again with additional set screws until the displacement plots are within specification.

Once the plot is within specification, do this step for each set screw:

  • Mark the hole that has a set screw.
  • Remove the set screw.
  • Apply thread lock compound to the screw.
  • Install the screw into its marked location.
