This procedure will show you how to install the Desktop Mill.

 Note: Desktop Lathes do not need to be Geolocated to activate. 

When unpacking bend the tab [1] so it is no longer bent back on itself and the crate can be disassembled as shown. 

NOTE: The tabs can be sharp so a screwdriver and plier are recommended for the unpacking.

Once the crate has been disassembled place the desktop mill on the desired surface by having two people lift up each end by using the handles.

Open the door and attach the door handle by screwing the #8 bolts into the handle as shown.

Once the desktop mill is completely assembled plug in the DB25 cable to the port shown [1]  and connect both cables [2] and [3] to power. 

The spindle unblocking process is different for the Reboot version of the machine compared to the Non-Reboot.

This section goes over unblocking the Reboot version. The next section goes over unblocking the Non-Reboot version.

Open the Desktop Mill's door and use a 1/4" socket to loosen the spindle block in the vice. 

Important: Do not press [POWER UP] to zero return the machine until the spindle block has been removed. The machine will crash if the spindle block is in the machine when it is zero returned. 

The normal process to start up a Haas machine includes 4 steps. None of these steps need to be done at this time. Particulary step 3 must not be done. 

Press [CANCEL] [5] in the start up screen to skip the start up process. 

Warning: Do not do step 3. This will cause the machine to crash. 

1. Cycling the door to verify the door switch is working. 
2. Emergency stop is disengaged
3. Pressing [POWER UP] to energize the machine and zero return. 
4. Press [CYCLE START] to run a program or Press [HANDLE JOG] for manual operation. 

Turn setting 53 -  Jog w/o Zero Return on. 

To do this, press [SETTINGS] and type "53". Then press [F1] to search for settings that contain "53". 

Use the arrow keys to highlight setting 53 -  Jog W/O Zero Return [1], then press the right arrow button to bring up a menu to change the setting. 

Highlight "on" [2] and press [ENTER]. 

Press [HANDLE JOG], then [Z].  Select the slowest jog speed of [.0001 .1]. Then slowly raise the spindle until the spindle block can be removed [1]. 

Once the spindle block has been removed, follow the instructions in step 2 to get to setting 53 - Jog w/o Zero Return, and set it to "off."

Zero return all axis on the machine. By pressing [ZERO RETURN] then [ALL]. 

Continue the installation process in the "Machine Operation" section below.

Important: The spindle should be moved the least amount necessary to remove the spindle block. 

Open the door and remove the M5 bolts [1] on the shipping bracket.

Loosen the M6 bolts [2] from the base of the bracket. There are nuts inside the slots, once the bolts are loosened slide the bracket out.  

Test Door

Press [MDI]. Type in S500 M3; Press [ENTER].

• With the door closed, press [CYCLE START] the spindle should be running, open the door and the spindle should stop.

NOTE: Opening the door while the spindle is running will trigger an error quickly stopping the spindle and axis, if this error does not occur or the spindle does not run when commanded contact Haas for support.

This procedure will show you how to install the pen option on a Desktop Mill.

Install pen option by tighening the ER nut into the spindle and then tightening the 1/4-20 nut with a wrench. 

NOTE:  When removing the pen option loosen the ER collet first before the 1/4-20 nut to avoid having the holder get stuck in the spindle and keep the assembly together while removing.

Place four 1" X 1" squares of double sided tape onto the back of the provided clipboard.

Once ready for use remove the film of the double sided tape for placement on the table.

Align the clipboard to the table as best as you can and apply pressure to stick the clipboard to the table.

NOTE: When getting ready to load the program it is important to note the spindle will not rotate, the axis should be the only thing moving.
