Steady Rest Provision - Installation

Revision 1

AD0633

Revision D - 03/2026

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to install a steady rest provision kit.

This Document Applies to the following Service Kits:

  • 93-1000510 Steady Rest Provision/Mount Kit - ST-30

Machine Compatibility

  • ST-20L/25L
  • ST-30/35/35L/30L

Tools Required

  • Dial Indicator

Note : Service Kit 93-1000510 is compatible with ST-20L and ST-25L machines.

Linear Guide Rails Identification Guide

Updated

Important : This service kit will not arrive with any runner blocks. Please use the identification guide below to order the correct runner block set for your machine.

Note : This guide applies to 35 mm linear guides for ST-30/20 machines, a total of two runner blocks are required.    You simply match the block height to the manufacturer, then order two of that type.

  1. Bosch Rexroth : 32.15 mm (1.265 in)
  2. THK (with cover) : 30.3 mm (1.142 in)
  3. Schaeffler INA : 27 mm (1.063 in)

Service Kits :

  • 93-4627 LG 35 BLK SL-L 6M10 M P LU SC CS THK HDR
  • 93-2176 LG 35 BLK FL-N 4M10 M P INA
  • 93-4427 LG 35 BLK FL-N 6M10 M P REX DS

Installation

1

Home machine axis then press the  [E-STOP] button and verify that the hydraulic pressure gauges read 0 psi (0 Bar).

Slide linear guide pads [1] onto the B-axis ensuring the balls within the linear guide truck remain in place.

2

Slide the steady rest brake [1] next to the linear pads on the linear rails then loosely bolt it onto the steady rest riser [2]. Align the components using the provided hardware [3]

3

Loosely install all the hardware and tighten the front right bolt [1] so that the riser has a pivoting point during squaring.

Note : Ensure that all the bolts are snug and not fully tightened until the riser is squared

Use an indicator to square the riser plate to the Z-axis. Mount the indicator base to the turret or X/Y axis linear rails.

Engage the steady rest brake and jog the Z-axis of the machine to indicate the side of the riser plate then proceed to square it.

Ensure parallelism NTE  0.001 in (0.0254 mm)

After squaring, torque all bolts per Haas Torque Chart. Verify squares afterwards.

Disengage the steady rest brake and verify the parallelism of the steady rest riser along the B-axis.

4

Assemble and install the steady rest hard stop by installing the provided bolt [2] into the stop body [1].

Note : There is a threaded provision for the stop on the machine base.

5

Remove the hardware [2] and rail [1] from the enclosure to gain access to the bolts that hold the front skirt in place.

Remove the front [2] and side [1] skirts from the machine to gain access to plumb the hydraulic lines.

Note : The front panel is held to the base casting by magnets at the bottom.

Important : Power off the machine and ensure that the HPU gauges are reading 0 psi before proceeding with disassembly.

Note: Oil will drain from existing manifold when installing the steady rest manifold.

Remove the plugs from the bottom of the existing HPU manifold install the bolts and split washers [3] then place the O-ring [2] on top of the steady rest manifold [1] and allow the bolts to guide it during assembly.

Note : Ensure the O-ring are lubricated to minimize pinching.

Tighten the bolts evenly with an open end wrench and ensure that the split washers are fully crushed.

Reinstalling the plugs into the bottom ports of the steady rest manifold.

Note : Ensure that the hydraulic line are ran through the provisions under the mounting plate.

Connect the hoses [1] to the angled fitting [2] and pass them through the mounting plate [3]. Secure them using the provided nuts [4] then proceed to fasten the plate [3] to the machine enclosure. Install the provided caps [6] securely to the lines.

6

Fasten the two hydraulic hoses to the OPEN and CLOSED fittings on the back of the steady rest manifold block.

Note : Ensure the line are not kinked or rubbing against any sharp edges

7

Connect the steady rest solenoid to P38 on the I/O board. Ensure the connector screw [1] is fully tightened.

8

Install the hose support bracket [1] (P/N 25-12426B) onto the studs [2] using the included hardware [3]. Older machines have a provisions in the base casting [5] that requires the use of the old hose support bracket [4] (P/N 25-12426A).

Note : Both brackets are included in service kit 93-1000510

Note : This image shows the smaller bracket for ST-30/35 machines.

9

Ensure proper slack in the hydraulic lines [2] so that they are not against any sharp metal corners. Zip tie the hoses to the support bracket [1] using the holes in it.

Turn on the machine and read the pressure gauge [2] on the steady rest manifold to ensure it does not exceed 400 psi (27.6 Bar).

Loosen the clamping bolt [4] and rotate the collar [4] to allow for adjustment of pressure.

Set the pressure to 400 psi (27.6 Bar) then bottom out the collar [3] and tighten the clamping bolt to have that value set as the maximum pressure.

Steady Rest Activation

Turn on the machine.

Login to the HBC PORTAL.

Download the Steady Rest option configuration patch files.

Note: The option files will appear on the configuration download page after the Steady Rest service kit has been ordered. If the option does not appear, contact the service department.

Load the option configuration patch file to the control. Refer to the NEXT GENERATION CONTROL - CONFIGURATION FILE - DOWNLOAD/LOAD procedure.

Setup

Ensure that Setting 317 Max user Travel Limit B in [SETTING] under "User Positions" is properly set to avoid the tailstock colliding into the steady rest.

To set Setting 317 jog the tailstock to the desired position then press [F2].
