IPFDM PCB - Troubleshooting Guide - NGC

TG0090

Revision A - 9/2025

Introduction

Machines with a 19 in LCD control will have a iPFDM PCB.

The iPFDM will be located on standoffs on top of the Main Processor PCB.

Overview

The iPFDM PCB will provide backup +12V, -12V, and +5V to the Main Processor in case of a power loss. The backup power will be sustained for at least ten seconds and block the user from attempting to turn on the machine for at least ten seconds.

  •  J3 is the power output connector to the PCB Fan.
  •  J2 is the power output connector where +5VDC and +/- 12VDC and a voltage monitor signal is delivered to the Main Processor PCB.
  •  J6 is the input - PSUP and CONTACTOR
  •  J4 is the output connector to the LCD PCB.
  •  J1 is the power input connector from the LVPS.
  •  J5 is the input connector for the Battery.

PCB serial number

The serial number [1] will start with two letters, followed by eight digits.

Electrical Safety

DANGER: Working with the electrical services required for CNC machines is extremely hazardous and can result in serious injury or death.

Before connecting line wires to the CNC:

  • Turn off all power to the machine at the source.
  • Perform a Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedure to ensure the power remains off during service.
  • Verify that power has been disconnected by using an AC voltage detector on all incoming lines.

If you are uncertain about how to safely disconnect power or perform LOTO procedures:

  • Do not proceed.
  • Contact qualified personnel or obtain appropriate assistance before continuing.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in electrical shock, equipment damage, or fatal injury.

Danger: Before beginning any work inside the control cabinet, verify that the High Voltage indicator light on the 320V Power Supply / Vector Drive has been off for a minimum of five (5) minutes. This waiting period ensures that residual voltage has dissipated and reduces the risk of electric shock.

Certain service procedures involve high-risk electrical components and may pose serious injury or fatality hazards. Technicians must not attempt any procedure unless they have a complete understanding of the steps involved and the associated risks.

If there is any uncertainty regarding a procedure, contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) to arrange for a qualified service technician.

iPFDM Troubleshooting

Note: Orient the iPFDM PCB so that the fan is blowing towards you for better access while troubleshooting. If this is not possible, a mirror can be used to assist while troubleshooting.

Note: The plastic cover does not need to be removed to see the LED's as they are located along the edges of the PCB.

  1. Verify all cables on the iPFDM PCB have been properly connected.
  2. Verify Nominal Operation Status. See table above.
  3. Look at the status LED lights. Refer to the LED table below.
  4. Verify battery voltage. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.

LED Table

Note: Be careful when measuring the battery voltage, it can be shorted easily.

LED# Status Corrective Action
D10 Green This is normal condition when the machine is booted.
D13-D16 Green
D16 Off Verify the cable at J1 is properly connected and not reverse polarized.
D1 Blinking Red Check the cable connection at J5. Check the battery voltage of at least 6.1V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.  If the battery voltage is lower, boot the machine and leave it idle for 30 minutes. Check the voltage again. If the problem persists, replace the battery.
D22 Red Check the battery voltage of at least 6.1V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.  If the battery voltage is lower, boot the machine and leave it idle for at least 15 minutes. Check the battery voltage again.
D21 Red Check the battery voltage of at most 8.2V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.  If the battery voltage is higher, replace the battery and try again.

Symptom Table

Symptom / Alarm Possible Cause Corrective Action
Fan not spinning, and LED D16 is off Issue with incoming power from J1 Verify the cable at J1 is properly connected and not reverse polarized.
The machine cannot sustain a ten second boot blockag,e and LED D1 is blinking red Bad cable connection Verify cable connected to J5 is secure.
Incorrect battery voltage Check the battery voltage of at least 6.1V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.  If the battery voltage is lower, boot the machine, leave it idle for 30 minutes, and try again. Check the voltage again. If the problem persists, replace the battery.
BATT_LO D22 is red Incorrect battery voltage Check the battery voltage of at least 6.1V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below.  If the battery voltage is lower, boot the machine, leave it idle for at least 15 minutes, and try again.
BATT_HI D21 is red Incorrect battery voltage Check the battery voltage of at most 8.2V. See PCB Battery Inspection section below. If the battery voltage is higher, replace the battery and try again.
The machine does not show nominal signs of operation Bad cable connection Check the cable connection at J6 on the iPFDM, P20 on the PSUP and to the auxiliary/coil cable.
Machine powers on with a black screen Battery disconnected from J5 on the IPFDM Check J5 on the IPFDM to ensure that it is pulled in.

PCB Battery Inspection

Note: Be careful when measuring the battery voltage, it can be shorted easily.

Use a multimeter to test the voltage of the battery cable connected to J5.

Note: Test the battery independently with a multimeter to ensure that it is producing a voltage between 6.1V and 8.2V.
