Desktop Lathe - Turret Gearbox - Replacement

Introduction

This procedure will show you how to replace the turret gearbox on a Haas Desktop Lathe.

Machine Requirements: 

  • NGC Software 100.24.000.1300 or higher.
  • 93-5177 - GEARBOX REPLACEMENT KIT DESKTOP LATHE

Turret Gearbox Removal

Push [POWER OFF].

Unplug the Desktop Lathe. 

NOTE: Be sure to unplug BOTH the control pendant and the Desktop Lathe power cords as current runs between the pendant and the lathe.

Open the door of the desktop lathe and jog the turret to ensure it is positioned away from the spindle, providing more workspace.

Using a 5/32 hex key, loosen the two button head cap screws [1] to remove the enclosure cover of the turret. 
Next, remove the four button head caps screws to detach the motor [2] from the turret gearbox.

Use a 5/32 hex key to carefully remove the microswitch [1] found behind the turret gearbox. 

Once removed, remove the mounting bracket [2].

Remove the two button head cap screws securing the turret to the gearbox.

Once removed, detach the turret [1] along with the washer located behind it.

Remove the four button head cap screws securing the turret friction plate to the gearbox, then slide the friction plate off [1].

Loosen the lock nut located behind the turret shaft. Once loosened, remove the turret shaft along with its associated components and set them aside [2].

Remove the four T-nuts securing the turret gearbox to the mounting plate [1].
Once the T-nuts are removed, lift the gearbox off the plate [2]. 

Turret Gearbox Installation

Install the new gearbox by securing it to the mounting plate with the four T-nuts [1].

Reinstall the turret shaft, assembling the components in the following order as shown in the image: spring [1], proximity switch flag cam, 5/16" washer, and M8 hex lock nut.

Reinstall the turret friction plate onto the new turret gearbox [1].
Secure it using the four socket head cap screws and torque them to 72 in-lb.

Using two 5/32" socket head cap screws, attach the turret to the friction plate as shown.
Torque the screws to 120 in-lb.

Carefully reinstall the mounting bracket onto the back of the turret gearbox to secure the microswitch, as shown in the image [1].

Reinstall the turret motor and torque the mounting bolts to 48 in-lb [2].

Reinstall the enclosure cover [3].
