UMC- Spider Coupler - Replacement

Introduction

The red spider couplings have been seen to produce inconsistencies resulting in reduced positioning accuracy and noticeable slop when the axis changes direction. On machines with this condition, symptoms may include poor positioning performance and servo response issues. These inconsistencies are often visible during a ballbar test, where reversal spikes may appear. Upgrading to the green spider couplings provides improved stiffness and consistency, which improves axis accuracy and motion performance.

This procedure will tell you how to replace and upgrade from the red spider couplings to the green spider couplings for your UMC. The procedure is the same for the X, Y, and Z.

Important: For the Z axis, the head will need to be blocked before following the procdure below.

These kits are for UMCs with valid dates from 7/19/2023 to 8/04/2023.

This procedure applies the following kits:

Replacement

Position the axis where you will have access to the servo motor housing.

Note: For the Z axis, you will need to block the head when doing this procedure.

Remove all of the sheet metal parts that obstruct the access to the servo motor housing.

Loosen the pinch bolt on the coupler for the motor then take out the four bolts holding the motor on.

Remove the servo motor [1].

Loosen the pinch bolt on the spider coupler [2] and remove the spider coupler from the ball screw.

Attach the updated green spider coupler [1] to the ball screw. Make sure that key is in the ball screw key way when attaching the spider coupler.

Note: One of the three couplers in the kit is a 22/24mm coupler. This coupler is for the Z-axis.

Put the servo motor [2] back on the housing making sure the key is on the motor shaft. Use the bolts from before to re attach the motor.

Align the coupler to evenly on both the motor shaft and the ball screw. Tighten the pinch bolts.

Repeat steps for other two axes.

Update Configuration Files

Once you have changed the three spider couplers, the configuration file will need to be updated to implement the necessary tunes for the spider couplers.

Load the configuration patch file to the control. Refer to the NEXT GENERATION CONTROL - CONFIGURATION FILE - DOWNLOAD/LOAD procedure.

Tool Change and Grid Offsets

The following procedures will need to be performed after replacing the couplers and updating the machine's configuration file.

Important: The grid offset procedure will need to be done first. After that is completed, the tool change offsets for X, Y and Z axis will need to be reset following the procedures below.
