This procedure shows you how to install a brace for the Non-Contact Encoder on 50T VMC. 

Parts Required:

• 93-3592: NCE Brace 50T Service Kit

Machine Requirements:

• VMC 50T build before 11/01/2022

NOTE: Vertical machines built after 11/01/2022 have the non-contact encoder brace already built in. 

Remove the spindle-head cover panels. 

If the machine has through-spindle coolant (TSC), remove the TSC Union assembly. Refer to 50 TAPER - TSC - COMPENSATING UNION AND THREADLESS TRANSFER TUBE - REPLACEMENT

Remove the TRP assembly [1]. Refer to VMC - 50-TAPER - TOOL RELEASE PISTON - REPLACEMENT for more information.

 NOTE: The gearbox assembly has been removed in the following illustrations for clarity.

When facing the front of the machine, measure the dimension [A] from the front edge of the heat shield and [B] from the outside edge of the heat shield.

Next, measure the same dimension [A] and dimension [C] from the outside edge of the heat shield. 

• A - 12.5" (31.75 cm)
• B - 1" (2.54 cm)
• C - 1.75" (4.445 cm)

Cut the holes [D] and [E]:

• D - 0.2" (0.508 cm)
• E - 0.2" (0.508 cm)

Repeat on other heat sheild [1].

NOTE: Ignore this step if heat shield holes [D] and [E] are already cut out. 

NOTE: Make sure spindle drive belt tension is within tolerance before install. Refer to SPINDLE DRIVE BELT - TENSION ADJUSTMENT - GATES SONIC METER - MILL for more information. 

Remove (2x) bolts [1] from read head mount [2]. 

Attach NCE read head brace [3]. Loosely reinstall (2x) bolts [1] connecting the brace to the read head mount. 

Install (4x) bolts [4] connecting the brace to both heat shield plates. 

Check the air gap between the encoder read-head [1] and ring [3] by putting a 0.3 mm plastic shim [2] through. 

Push the encoder read-head toward the encoder ring as needed.

Make sure there is a uniform air gap [4] between the encoder read-head and the encoder ring.

Tighten the (2x) screws [5] for the encoder read-head. Remove the shim.

Install the tool release piston (TRP) assembly [1]. Hand-tighten the screws.

If the machine has through-spindle coolant (TSC), install the TSC union. Connect the TSC hose.

Operate the spindle at 25% [1], 50% [2], and 100% [3] of the maximum speed.

 NOTE: In this example the maximum speed is 7500 RPM.

 Push [COOLANT] to start the TSC.

Correct operation is as follows:

1. Coolant flows correctly from the TSC tool holder [1].
2. A few drops flow from the vacuum-generator hose [2].

Push [RESET].

Make sure there are no leaks in the air hoses and coolant hoses.
