Introduction

This procedure will explain how to install the pneumatic workholding assembly on UMC reboot machines.

Prerequisites:

Machine Software Version 100.20.000.1110 or higher.

This procedure applies to reboot machines only.

To install this option the platter will need mounting holes for a coupler, this was implemented after 04/2020.

The following kits are for UMC's after 04/2020 that do not need a platter:

  • 93-1000616: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC500
  • 93-1000617: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC750
  • 93-1000618: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC1000
  • 93-1000619: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC1500
  • 93-1000620: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC1250

For UMC's before 04/2020 the platter will be included in the following kits:

  • 93-1000621: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC500 W/P
  • 93-1000622: AIR VISE READY FIELD INSTALL UMC750 W/P

Updated

Place the platter on a bench and bolt the coupler [1] to the platter using SHCS 1/4-20 X 5/8 [2].

While the platter is on the bench insert the felt strip included in the kit in the groove [3]

NOTE: If the UMC is not exchanging platters reuse the felt strip already in the groove.

Torque the bolts to their required specs.

8

Updated

When using the same platter:

The height measurement between the top of the platter and the top of the coupler needs to be taken to ensure proper fittment of the workholding spud.

Use a depth micrometer to measure between the two surfaces. The measurement should be 0.7000 ± .0010" for machines built before 5/22/2026 and 0.7560 ± .0010" for machines built after 5/22/2026 [1].

Note: The measurement is taken without the seal.

Install shims P/N 59-2350 and 59-2351 as needed to achieve proper workholding height. The shims are installed between the workholding and the platter face [2].

9

Install the coupler onto the shaft assembly [1] by using 1/4-20 X 1 1/4 bolts [3]. Make sure the O-Rings 2-011 [2] are in the cavaties of the shaft and not where the bolts attach.

Torque the bolts to their required specs.

10

Install the coupler and platter assembly [2] back onto the rotary using M12 bolts [1].

Tighten the bolts, but do not torque them down yet.

Follow the installation section of the UMC C-Axis Platter Replacement linked below for the full instruction on how to correctly reinstall the platter.

UMC Pneumatic Vise - Installation

AD0543

Revision A - 06/2026

Introduction

This procedure will explain how to install the air vise option on the UMC series machines.

Please refer to the PNEUMATIC WORKHOLDING procedure to install the air booster, workholding manifold, and the other components that drive the air vise.

Pre-requisites:

  • Software version 100.20.000.1110

This document applies to the following part numbers:

  • 05-0408 AIR VISE SELF-CENTER 100mm, UMC
  • 05-0409 AIR VISE SELF-CENTER 150mm, UMC

Blank platters have a no drill zone [1] of  Ø7.25 in. and ↧1.75 in. for custom workholding on these platters.

Machines sold with a blank platter also have the option of purchasing the Haas air vise.

To install the vise the user will need to drill mounting holes outside the no drill zone [1].  Home the B & C-Axis and drill using the hole pattern that follows:

  • 100mm Air Vise – 4x ½-13 at 220mm [2] x 126mm [3] (on center)
  • 150mm Air Vise – 4x ½-13 at 270mm [2] x 252mm [3] (on center)

Use the brake bleed access hole for reference [4].

NOTE: Pictured is a UMC-500 blank platter but the no drill zone and Haas air vise hole pattern will be the same throughout all UMC models.

Installation

1

Ensure the system is not pressurized before installing the vise.

Close the air valve [1] at the bottom of the lube cabinet.

Bleed the remaining air out of the manifold by pulling on the air release [2]. Make sure the gauge on the manifold reads zero.

2

Remove the (3x) bolts acting as plugs on the coupler [1].

3

Verify that the vise seal [1] is seated properly. The o-ring side of the seal [2] should be facing toward the UMC rotary.

Note: The seal only sits in one orientation. The location of holes on the coupler are not equally spaced and the seal is made to match the coupler's spacing.

4

Set the C-axis to its home position.

Clean the mating surface inside the center bore and on the spud of the air  vice.

NOTE: Always clean inside the center bore for chips before installing the pneumatic vise.

Safely lift the vise and match the holes on the coupler to the holes on the vise.

NOTE: The coupler can only be installed to the platter in one orientation and the holes on the coupler are not equally spaced. This means that the air vise can only be installed in one orientation to function correctly.

Secure the air vise to the platter using the 1/2-13 T-nuts and 1/2-13 SHCS provided.

5

Re-introduce air to the manifold by turning the valve [1].
