This procedure tells you how to install the Office Lathe Air Collet Closer (ACC) upgrade kit 93-20027 to the OL-1 ACC.

This procedure tells you how to set up the OL-1 software for use with the air collet closer upgrade.

The required software version can be found on the HAAS BUSINESS CENTER under the 'Service' section. Then, download it through 'Utilities' under 'Documents and Software' section. 

 Note: If the machine has 8.xx series software, get version L8.04Q or newer. If the machine has 6.xx series software, get the latest 6.08 software.

Change Parameter 800 (Chuck Closer Type) from 0 to 2.

Power off the machine. Turn off the air.

Remove the rear panel [3], horizontal cable rear cover [2], vertical cable rear cover [1], and pendant arm cover [4].

 Note: The rear panel may be sealed in place. Use a knife to break the seal and remove the panel.

Disconnect the solenoid cable and air hose from the solenoid assembly [1] located under the fan at the rear of the machine.

Remove the solenoid assembly [1] from the machine.

Install the dual solenoid assembly.

Attach the assembly to the existing bracket with (2) #8 1-1/4'' socket head cap screws (SHCS) and (2) #8 lock nuts.

Note: External enclosure parts have been removed for clarity.

Remove the air cylinder [1] and cylinder mount [2].

Press fit the sleeve bearing [1] into the new cylinder mount [2]. Now, attach the new air cylinder [3] to the mount [2].

Install new air cylinder [3] and new cylinder mount [2] to enclosure. 

Bolt together the new cylinder mount [2] to the collet arm. Install two washers--one larger [5] and one smaller [4]--on either side to help center the air cylinder.

Check the condition of the rollers on the lever [6]. Replace them if needed.

Replace the draw bar [1] with the draw bar from the service kit.

Connect air hoses as shown.

Install the rear panel [3], horizontal cable rear cover [2], vertical cable rear cover [1], and pendant arm cover [4].

Power on the machine. Turn on the air.

This procedure tells you how to make sure the OL-1 air collet closer (ACC) is operating correctly and adjust the ACC clamp force.

 Caution: Make sure that the air pressure to the air cylinder is 45 - 50 psi. Excess air pressure may damage the air collet closer.

 Note: External enclosure parts have been removed for clarity.

Perform the following steps to make sure of proper solenoid function and correct air hose connections before final adjustment.

1. Insert a collet [1] into the spindle.
2. Set the collet draw bar adjustment switch [2] to the down position.
3. Press the CHUCK button [3] and make sure that the collet clamps.
4. Press the CHUCK button again and make sure that the collet unclamps. The collet should clamp and unclamp with alternating presses of the CHUCK button.
5. In the 'clamped' position, the ACC will relax after (2) seconds. This movement is enough to disengage the rollers on the drawbar lever from the drawbar shoulder, but not all the way to the 'unclamped' position.

 Note: If the ACC does not function properly, make sure that the ACC solenoids and air hoses are connected correctly and that the ACC solenoids are operating correctly.

With a workpiece in the collet, turn the knurled knob [1] clockwise or counter-clockwise and clamp after each adjustment until you get the required clamp force. This adjustment will vary depending on the task. Each adjustment will require these steps:

1. Press the CHUCK button [3] to unclamp the collet (UNCLAMPED is displayed on the screen).
2. Set the collet draw bar adjustment switch [2] to the center position to release pressure on the piston.
3. If this is the first adjustment, rotate the knurled knob [1] (clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen) until the workpiece is hand tightened in the collet. Rotate the knurled knob one full turn counter-clockwise to set the collet in an intermediate position.
4. If additional adjustments are needed, turn the knurled knob [1] 1/8 turn clockwise or counter-clockwise each adjustment to loosen or tighten the collet.

1. Toggle the collet draw bar adjustment switch [2] down.
2. Press the CHUCK button [3] to clamp the collet (UNCLAMPED disappears from the screen).
3. The workpiece is properly clamped when the draw bar arm [4] hesitates and makes an audible "pop" during clamping, then continues to the end of the piston stroke (as seen when a part is not in the collet).
4. If the arm does not go to full stroke, or does not hesitate during clamping, the workpiece is not properly clamped and may be ejected.
   

    Warning: If the workpiece is ejected during machining, it may cause damage or injury.
   

5. If the workpiece is not properly clamped, repeat this procedure after each adjustment until you get the required clamp force.

Make sure that the rollers [1] on the lever move freely when the collet is in the ‘clamped’ position.
