Lathe HPU Retrofit Kit -Installation

Introduction

This procedure applies to 93-3349 HPU SERVICE KIT ASSY UNIT PRE 2015. Lathe machines buit before 2015 were manufactured with 3 possible HPU's brands. They are as follows:

  • Rexroth HPU
  • Parker HPU
  • Haas Built HPU

This kit will replace any of those old HPU's Haas used to use. This kit only includes the HPU, THE MANIFOLD BLOCK(S) ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS KIT. Please refer to the flow chart in the next section for further information. 

Flow Chart Diagram

The diagram below can be used to determind what manifold block is needed for the replacement. 

NOTE: The original manifold blocks can be used if they are not damaged. Using the original manifold blocks minimizes the need for finding new fittings for hoses on the manifold, some sourcing WILL be required.

NOTE: Use the machine BOM and the proper supersession chain to order the correct part number for the manifold.

Installation with New Manifold Block(s)

This section describes how to install the replacement manifold along with the replacement HPU. The part numbers for manifold block assemblies are as followed:

  • T/S Valve Block HPU 30-8055
  • Chuck Valve Block HPU 30-8011

The hose denoted as [1] is the inlet to the manifold, this connects to the top of the tailstock or chuck manifold.

NOTE: Pictured is the tailstock and chuck manifold mounted on top of each other, the chuck only manifold will have the hose installed on the top of the manifold, similar to the tailstock manifold.

The corrugated hose [2] will connect to the hydraulic union on the spindle. 

The black hydraulic hose [3] will connect on the bottom side of the bracket to the 90 degree elbo fitting, this is the return line from the manifold.

NOTE: the smaller corrugated hose [4] will connect to the Tee fitting on the pump. 

 

IMPORTANT: The tank top is configured differently depending on the brand of the HPU pump that it is being replaced with. Look for the model decal on the pump. Both vendors shall be supported interchangeably; however, due to differing pump pick-up location dimensions, the design shall incorporate one standardized set of motor mounting holes and two distinct sets of pump pick-up mounting holes to accommodate each vendor configuration.

NACHI Pump will have the tank top configured to have the grommet [3] as shown in image [1]. Apply Sikaflex sealant to hole plug [4] and install it to seal the opening as shown in image [1]. Remove any excess sealant using a paper towel.

CAMEL Pump will have the tank top configured to have grommet [3] as shown in image [2]. Apply Sikaflex sealant to hole plug [4] and install it to seal the opening as shown in image [2]. Remove any excess sealant using a paper towel.

General Installation Using Old Manifold Block

Depending on how the the HPU is configured this procedure will vary, this section is a general guideline outlining how to retrofit the old manifold block onto the new HPU system.

Match the following hoses to the manifold being used. The part number and thread sizes for each of the hoses has been listed for reference.

  1. The hydraulic union on the spindle (58-1830 HOSE ASSY 3/4ID NPT3/4-M NPT3/4-F 48)
  2. The return line ( 59-1293 FITG HOSE END JIC-6-F X -6 HOSE)
  3. The inlet to the manifold. (59-1293 FITG HOSE END JIC-6-F X -6 HOSE)

The manifold will mount to the mounting bracket. Holes will need to be drilled to accommodate the location of the holes on the old manifold. The existing holes only accommodate the newer manifold.

Some of the older HPU's will have this return pipe on the manifold, this can be removed and a 90 degree elbow can be put in its place.

NOTE: The correct fitting thread size for the manifold will need to be sourced. The return hose from the HPU will connect to this location. 

Electrical Connections

Connect the extension cable 33-8411 SPINDLE FAN EXT CBL 13.0-STORM to the HPU and route this cable through the same location the previous wire was routed through and connect this to P32/P33 on the I/O board. A "Y" adapter  33-8107 CBL300A SP FAN "Y" ADAPTER has been included in the kit, in case something is already connected to this port. 

NOTE: If the machine has a pre-I/O S board [1] the provided connector may need to be modified to work with the pre- I/O S board.  This will plug into P35 on the pre-I/O S board, please contact Haas Service for any further assistance.
