SB-Series - Tool Turret Troubleshooting Guide

Introduction

SB - series turret is a curvic coupler hydraulic system. It relies on hydraulic pressure to couple/decouple internally to allow the indexer to rotate to the commanded tool.

Symptom Table

2022 TURRET FAILED TO LEAVE CLAMP SWITCH Check the cable coming from P2 on the IO PCB going to the tool turret. Check the part number of the cable connected to P2 on the IO PCB. If cable is 33-8450A then there is another cable 33-1487 connected to the clamp/unclamp turret switches. Check both cables and the 2x2 molex connectors to see if they have been damaged. If there is damage then order cable 33-1651 (SB-28) or 33-1652 (SB-35). See the Turret Clamp/Unclamp Sensors section below.
Check the hydraulic pressure of the system. Check the hydraulic lines going to tool turret for leaks. Check the hydraulic pressure at the HPU.

TT-axis reset

Press the [E-STOP]. Go to [DIAGNOTICS] > [PARAMETERS] > [FACTORY] and type TT+F1. Confirm that TT-AXIS TOOL CHANGE OFFSET and TT-AXIS GRID OFFSET both read zero. Set TT-AXIS INVISIBLE to FALSE

Go to [POSITION] and press [ALTER]. Scroll to TT and press [ENTER]. Press [ALTER] again.

Type TT then press [ZERO RETURN], then [SINGLE].

Once the turret has zero returned, press [POWER UP] and then [T].

When prompted, press [N] for no. Type TT and then press [HANDLE JOG]. 

Using the jog wheel, jog the turret until the red arrow aligns with pocket 1.

Go to [DIAGNOSTICS] > [PARAMETERS] > [FACTORY] and press [TT]+[F4]

Zero return the turret again by typing [TT], press [ZERO RETURN], then [SINGLE].

After the turret has re-zeroed, press [POWER UP] > [T] > [N] again.

Hand Jog to line up pocket 1 again

Press the [E-STOP] and go to [DIAGNOSTICS] > [PARAMETERS] > [FACTORY] and press [TT]+[F2].

Release the [E-STOP] and zero return the turret again by typing [TT], press [ZERO RETURN], then [SINGLE].

Repeat this step if TT loads are high.

Cycle through all the pockets using [MDI], [TURRET FWD], and then [TURRET REV]. Verify that all loads are 15% or lower. Adjust the TT-AXIS TOOL CHANGE OFFSET as needed

Live Drive Alignment

Jog turret to a working position

Removed Turret plug (10 mm)

Loosen live drive pinch bolt (8 mm)

Place T-#### on pocket 1. Insert T-#### onto the live drive. Pivot / tilt the live drive assembly until the indicator reads 0.

Tighten pinch bolt (24 N.m max). Reinstall plug.

Note : Verifying LT axis alignment after a crash is also recommended using T-### and setting parameter 32.085 LT-Axis Spindle Orient Offset 

Tool Turret Clamp/Unclamp Sensors

The clamp and unclamp proximity sensors can be accessed through cap on the top of the tool turret body [1].

Inspect the proximity sensors [2] to make sure they are not damaged.

The proximity sensors are connected to a terminal block located near the rear of the tool turret body [3].

Remove the cable cover to ensure that the cable coming from the IO PCB is connected to the terminal block.

The cables should be connected as follows:

  • 12V RTN to 1
  • TT CLAMP TO 2
  • TT UNCLAMP TO 3
  • 12V RTN TO 4

Check the part number of the cables connected to the turret terminal block (previous step) and to the IO PCB at P2. 

If the machine is using cables 33-1487 and 33-8450A/33-8452A/33-8453A there could be damage to the connectors sitting inside the Z-axis cable carrier [1]. 

Check the connectors and see if they have been disconnected or damaged.

If either cable has been damaged, replace both cables with:

  • 33-1652 - SB-28/Y
  • 33-1651 - SB-35/L/Y

Note: The new cables 33-1652/33-1651 go all the way from P2 on the IO PCB to the turret terminal block with no intermediate connection.
