VMC - 40-Taper - Inline - Bearingless TSC Union - Replacement

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to replace the Bearingless TSC Union. Do this procedure for machines that have all of these components:

  1. 40-taper inline spindle
  2. TSC-ready
  3. The machine has 300- or 1000-psi coolant.
  4. The coolant system was made after June 2012.

A machine that has the Consolidated Air/Lubrication Module (CALM) is TSC-ready.

  1. Check Valve Assembly
  2. Bearingless Union Assembly
  3. Vacuum Drain Hose
  4. Vacuum Hose
  5. Regulator
  6. Vacuum Generator

Parts Required:

  • Service kit (P/N 93-2128A)

Prepare the machine for service.

Remove the inline spindle head and motor covers.

Press [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Lockout/Tagout the main circuit breaker.

40 - Taper - Bearingless TSC Union - Removal

Locate the regulator on the bearingless TSC union.

Disconnect the 1/4" gray vacuum generator tube from the regulator.

Locate the 3/8" hose on the bearingless TSC union.

Disconnect the hose.

Remove the hose clamp.

Locate the 7/16" high-pressure braided TSC hose. The hose is located on the top of the bearingless TSC union.

Disconnect the hose.

40 - Taper - Bearingless TSC Union - Installation

Make sure the bearingless-union shaft threads and o-ring are clean. Apply lithium grease to the o-ring.

Install the spindle-lock tool (P/N T-1635). With the spindle-lock tool installed, the spindle cannot turn.

Fully clean the motor shaft threads.

Install the bearingless shaft onto the motor.

Turn the shaft counterclockwise to tighten.

Torque the shaft to 30 ft-lb (41 Nm).

Examine the carbide insert for cracks.

Install the bearingless-union assembly to the top of the spindle-drive motor.

Use the (4) standoffs and (4) 1/4-20 x 2" socket-head cap screws (SHCS).

Turn the spindle with your hand. This puts the union in the center.

Note: The arrow [1] points to the front of the machine. Make sure to install the bearingless union in the position shown.

Turn the spindle by hand. This will center the union.

Torque the (4) screws for the bearingless-union.

Torque the screws to 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).

Connect the pressure-supply tube [1] and the vacuum-generator pressure tube [2].

Note: Look at the color-coded cable ties on the regulator push-lock connectors. Make sure the cable-tie color is the same as the tube color.

Find the 7/16" TSC hose in the service kit. This is a high-pressure, braided hose.

Connect the hose to the bearingless union [1].

Connect the other end of the hose to the check-valve assembly [2].

Connect the 3/8" tube to the bearingless union as shown.

Tighten the tube with a clamp.

Remove the spindle-lock tool.

Do the Vibration Analysis procedure.

TSC - Lubrication Panel Components - Installation

This procedure tells you how to do these tasks:

  1. Add the solenoids to the lubrication panel.
  2. Connect the solenoids to air.

TSC-ready machines have the necessary hoses installed. The configuration of solenoids can be different from the illustrations.

Open the lubrication-panel door.

Turn off the air supply [1].

Pull the ring [2] on the bleed valve in the air manifold. Wait until all air pressure is released.

Look at the manifold pressure gauge. Make sure that the air pressure is 0 psi.

Remove and discard the manifold plug shown.

Clean the debris from the manifold port threads.

Do this step if you install TSC 1000 psi:

Locate the TSC-vacuum solenoid assembly in the kit.

Remove the 35 psi air regulator [1].

Install the 85 psi air regulator [2].

Install the TSC-vacuum solenoid assembly in the upper manifold port.

Note: The TSC-vacuum solenoid assembly has a gray-cable tie on the push-lock fitting.

Locate the tube cap on the 1/4" gray tube.

Remove the cap.

Discard the cap.

Trim the tube to the correct length.

Connect the tube to the air regulator.

Caution: Always trim tube ends square. If you cut the tube end at an angle, the tube does not make a good connection. A bad connection causes insufficient air pressure. Insufficient air pressure causes a malfunction.

Locate the cable from the vacuum solenoid. The cable is gray.

Locate the connector panel. The connector panel is to the left of the air manifold.

Connect the cable to the correct connector.

Note: The decal on the connector panel has a color code and the connection name. Make sure the color on the cable is the same as the color on the label.

TSC-300 PSI and TSC-1000 PSI - Test

Operate this code in MDI mode:

    M59 P1148 ;

    G04 P5.0 ;

    M69 P1148 ;

    G04 P2.0 ;

    M99 ;

P1148 is for inline spindles.

For HS machines, use P1124 and not P1148.

For belt-drive spindles, use P1120 and not P1148.

If the machine has a bearingless union, the union moves up and down at 7-second intervals. The up and down movement is small.

The illustration shows the up and down movements for these machines:

  1. 40-Taper
  2. 40-Taper (CALM)
  3. 50-Taper

Push [RESET].

Push [AUX CLNT] to activate the TSC.

Inspect the TSC hoses for leaks.

Correct operation is as follows:

  1. Coolant [1] flows correctly from the spindle.
  2. A few drops flow from the vacuum-generator hose [3].

Push [RESET].

Put a TSC toolholder [2] in the spindle.

Push [AUX CLNT] to start the TSC.

Correct operation is as follows:

  1. Coolant flows correctly from the spindle [1].
  2. A few drops flow from the vacuum-generator hose [3].

Examine the TSC hoses for leaks.

Push [RESET].

Install the spindle-head cover panels.
