Introduction

  1. Check-Valve Assembly.
  2. Bearing TSC Union Assembly.
  3. Bearingless TSC Union Assembly.
  4. Vacuum Generator

Note: For machines with the ZF gearbox, you cannot replace a bearing TSC union assembly [2] with a bearingless TSC union assembly [3]. You must replace a bearing TSC union assembly [2] with a bearing TSC union assembly [2].

Applicable service kits: 

  • 93-2304 TSC Union Bearingless 50T Retrofit kit

Tools Required:

  • Spindle Lock Tool (T-2080)
  • Dial Indicator (that can measure 0.0001") with Magnetic Base
  • Mobil CM-P (99-0007)
  • Blue Loctite
  • Red-I Grease (99-4520A)
  • 1" Deep Socket

Bearing TSC Union and Transfer Shaft - Removal

Push [POWER OFF]

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Remove the spindle-head cover panels.

Remove one of the spindle-cap screws [1] from the spindle cap. This lets you install the spindle orientation lock tool.

Align one spindle dog with the empty hole.

Align the open end of the spindle orientation lock tool with the spindle dog.

Install the spindle orientation lock tool [2].

Use a 3/8-16 x 2-1/2" screw [3].

Tighten the screw [4].

Remove the high-pressure braided hose [1] from the check-valve assembly [2].

Disconnect the vacuum-drain hose [3] from the bearing TSC union assembly [4].

Note: You connect the hose [3] in subsequent steps.

Use a 15/16" wrench to remove the bearing TSC union assembly [4]. Turn the assembly [4] clockwise to loosen it.

Use a 7/8" wrench [1] to remove the extension-tube assembly [2]. Turn clockwise to loosen.

Remove the adapter spring [3].

Use a 2" wrench to remove the adapter [4]. Turn the adapter [4] counterclockwise to loosen it.

Bearingless TSC Union and Transfer Shaft - Installation

Clean these parts:

  • shaft threads for the bearingless TSC union
  • o-ring [2]

Apply Red-I grease [1] to the o-ring [2].

Install the shaft [3] onto the extension-tube assembly [4]. Turn the shaft counterclockwise to tighten it.

Apply Mobil CM-P grease [5] to these parts:

  • extension-tube shaft [6]
  • o-ring [7] for the extension-tube assembly

Apply thread-locking compound to the shaft threads [3] for the TRP. Use a thread-locking compound that is medium strength.

Install the adapter [2]. Turn the adapter [2] clockwise to tighten.

Install the adapter spring [1] into the adapter [2].

Apply the same thread-locking compound to the threads on the extension-tube assembly [4].

Use the 1" deep socket to install the extension-tube assembly [4]. Turn the assembly [4] counterclockwise to tighten it. Torque the assembly [4] to 30 ft-lb (41 Nm).

Remove the spindle-orientation lock tool.

Manually turn the spindle, while you measure the total indicated runout (TIR) of the shaft [5] for the extension-tube assembly. Use a dial indicator [6]. The TIR must be less than 0.001" (0.025 mm). If the TIR is more than 0.001" (0.025mm), speak to Haas service.

For VMCs or HMCS with TSC-1000:

Remove the 35-psi regulator [2] from the bearingless-TSC union assembly [1] and the pressure-switch assembly [4].

Install the 85 psi regulator [3] to the bearingless-TSC union assembly [1] and the pressure-switch assembly [4].

Make sure the arrow [5] on the 85-psi regulator is in the correct direction.

For HMCs with TSC 300 and 1000 psi:

Remove the straight fitting [6].

Install the elbow fitting [7].

Turn the regulator, pressure-switch assembly, and the fitting assembly so the bearingless-TSC union assembly [8] is in the position shown.

For VMCs [A]: Install the bearingless-TSC union assembly [1].

For HMCs [B]: Install the bearingless-TSC union assembly [3].

Use the (4) 1/4-20 x 1 1/4" socket-head cap screws (SHCS) [2]. Torque the (4) SHCS [2]. Refer to Haas Fastener Torque Specifications. Use the value for steel.

Caution: For HMCs [B]: Make sure the position of the bearingless TSC Union is correct as follows: Slowly jog the Y Axis to the home position (Y=0). Look at the TSC Union and make sure it does not hit the top of the column. If necessary, adjust the position of the bearingless TSC Union and do this step again.

Bearingless TSC Union - Connections

Do this step for VMC [A] or HMC [B].

For VMCs [A], do these steps:

  • Find the solenoid assembly [3] for the gear-shift valve. This assembly [3] is behind the spindle motor.
  • Remove the plug [1] adjacent to the two copper lines on the assembly [3].
  • Install the fitting assembly [4] into the assembly [3] for the gear-shift valve.

For HMCs [B], do these steps:

  • Remove the straight fitting [5] from the fitting assembly [4].
  • Install the elbow fitting [6] into the fitting assembly [4].
  • Find the solenoid assembly [2] for the gear-shift valve. This assembly [2] is on top of the spindle motor.
  • Remove the plug [1] adjacent to the two copper lines on the assembly [2].
  • Install the elbow fitting assembly [7] into the assembly [2] for the gear-shift valve.

Do this step for VMCs only:

Connect the shorter tube [2] in the kit to the elbow fitting [4] and to the straight fitting [3].

Connect the longer tube [5] in the kit to the straight fitting [1] and to the fitting [6]. The fitting [6] is located on the solenoid assembly for the gear shift valve [7].

Note: Make sure the longer tube [5] has no interference with any other parts.

Do this step for VMCs only:

Connect the high-pressure braided hose [1] to the top [2] of the bearingless TSC union.

Connect the second section of the hose [1] to the check-valve assembly [6].

Connect the vacuum-drain hose [4] to the fitting [3] on the bearingless TSC union.

If the hose [4] comes into contact with the proximity sensor bracket [5], it can bend the hose and reduce its efficiency. Turn the fitting [3] so the hose is aimed away from the bracket [5], toward the back of the spindle head.

Do this step for HMCs only:

Find the shorter air tube [2] in the kit. Connect the tube [2] to the (2) elbow fittings [3] on the bearingless TSC union.

Find the longer tube [6] in the kit. Connect the tube [6] to the straight fitting [1] on the bearingless TSC union. Connect the second section of tube [6] to the elbow fitting [5] on the solenoid assembly [4] for the gear-shift valve.

Do this step for HMCs only:

Connect the vacuum-drain hose [1] to the barb fitting [2] on the bearingless TSC union.

Install the brass fitting [3] to the bearingless TSC union.

Connect the high-pressure braided hose [4] to the brass fitting [3]. Connect the other section of the hose [4] to the check-valve assembly [5].

Pressure Switch Cable - Installation

Find the cable [1] with the label PROX NC DB CLAMPED. This cable is connected to the TOOL CLAMP STATUS port [2] on the spindle bracket.

Disconnect the cable [1] from the port [2].

Find the cable that has the label TO BRKT CLMP SW [3] in the kit.

Connect the cable [3] to the port [2].

Find the cable [1] that has the label PROX NC DB CLAMPED.

Find the cable [2] that has the label 33-3350A TO CLMP SW.

Connect cables [1] and [2].

Find the (2) leads [3] of the cable that has the label TO AIR PRESS SW.

Connect the (2) leads [3] to the pressure switch [4].

Press [POWER ON].

Make sure these parameters have these values:

  1. Parameter 149 - PRE-CHARGE DELAY: 0.
  2. Parameter 235 - TSC PISTON SEAT: 500.
  3. Parameter 236 - TSC LOW PR FLT: 5000.

Upgrade to Bearingless Union - Test

Set the main circuit breaker to the ON position.

Push [POWER ON].

Push [RESET].

Push [AUX CLNT] to activate the TSC.

Examine the TSC hoses for leaks.

Correct operation is as follows:

  1. Coolant [1] flows correctly from the spindle.
  2. A few drops flow from the vacuum drain hose [3].

Push [RESET].

Put a TSC toolholder [2] in the spindle.

Push [AUX CLNT] to start the TSC.

Correct operation is as follows:

  1. Coolant flows correctly from the TSC tool holder.
  2. A few drops flow from the vacuum drain hose [3].

Examine the TSC hoses for leaks.

Push [RESET].

Install the covers for the spindle head.
