ATP - Probe Replacement - AD0632

- Jump to Section - 1. Introduction 2. Probe Removal (8 steps) 3. Probe Installation (5 steps) 4. ATP Alignment, Calibration, and Testing (1 step) Back to Top

Introduction

This procedure shows how to replace the probe on the ATP of ST series machines. This procedure can be performed on all ST machines with ATPs already installed.

This Document Applies to the Following Service Kits:

  • 93-32-0425     PROBE, R-TS20 M-T18 LTP 4 PIN
  • 93-1000822     LATHE TOOL PRESETTER ST-10 2022
  • 93-1000823     LATHE TOOL PRESETTER ST-15 2022

Machine Requirements:

  • Non-compact ATP [1]
  • Compact ATP [2]

Note: DO NOT cut the probe sensor cable at any time. If the sensor is returned with the cable cut, your warranty will be voided.

Probe Removal

1

NOTE: On some machines it may be necessary to remove the chuck in order to remove the ATP.

It is recommended to watch the Chuck Installation Guide video for detailed information on how to remove the chuck from the spindle.

The TL-1/2 - 10" Manual 3-Jaw Chuck (2.5K Max RPM) - Installation can be followed as a general guidance on how to remove the chuck.

2

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with and approved safety tag.

Set the air valve to the OFF position and bleed the excess air.

3

Lift the schematic panel [1] off of the side of the machine to expose the area behind the bulkhead.

Slide the connection cover [2] up and locate the blue sensor cable. Unplug this cable and remove the blue cable from all velcro fasteners.

4

Remove the ATP Cover [2] from the ATP Base [1] by unscrewing the fasteners [3].

NOTE: The Non-Compact ATP is shown for reference. The same applies for the Compact ATP unless mentioned otherwise.

5

Non-Compact ATP

Unscrew the cable clamp [2] by removing the screw [1].

Carefully slide blue cable out of the cable holder and remove the white, protective cable cover [3].

Lastly, gently feed the blue cable up through the hole [4].

6

Compact ATP

Carefully slide blue cable [1] out and remove the white, protective cable cover [2].

Gently feed the blue cable up through the hole [3].

7

Bring the arm down [1] and remove the screws [2] holding the probe [3] onto the arm.

Gently continue feeding the cable through the arm by pulling the probe. Stop once the cable gets stuck, DO NOT continue to try and pull it free.

Place the probe in a safe location and continue onto the next step.

8

Remove the arm [1] by removing the screws [2] holding the arm to the base. This will expose the end of the blue probe cable where it most likely got stuck.

NOTE: For the compact ATP shown on the right, remove the plug [A] covering the screw first.

Continue to feed the probe cable through until it has been completely removed.

Probe Installation

1

Feed the end of the new sensor's blue probe cable through the gasket [1] and through the ATP hole [2].

Align the holes on the probe [3], gasket [1], and ATP arm, then fasten the probe to the arm using the four smaller screws [4].

Continue to feed the blue probe through the ATP base [5] until the cable is taut.

2

Reattach the ATP arm to the base by lining up the dowel pin and screws [1] into the arm base.

NOTE: For the compact ATP, reinstall the plug [A] covering the screw.

3

Twist the protective cable cover [2] back over the probe cable [1].

NOTE: For Non-Compact ATPs illustrated on the left, reroute the probe cable through the cable clamp [3]. Fasten the cable holder back down.

Route the probe cable down into the hole [4].

Next, reattach the base cover [5] to the base using the screws [6].

4

Route blue probe cable [1] through the bulkhead and up to the spindle head bracket as shown.

Reconnect the cable to the correct connector [2] labeled "AUTO TOOL PROBE".

5

Turn the circuit breaker back on, turn on the air, and power up the machine.

Once the machine has turned on, ensure that the cable is properly connected by gently touching the sensor. If the sensor beeps, the cable is correctly wired and connected. If the sensor does not beep, check that the cable end is connected into the correct connector.

Once it is confirmed that the sensor is properly connected, reattach the contact cover [1] and ensure the velcro straps are reaffixed to hold the sensor cable.

Lastly, slide the schematic panel [2] back onto the side of the machine.

ATP Alignment, Calibration, and Testing

1

After reinstalling the ATP, it needs to be realigned, calibrated, and tested.

Follow the Automatic Tool Presetter (ATP) - Alignment - Test - Calibration procedure for detailed steps on how to do this.
