ST/DS Lathe Live Tool Drive Assembly Replacement

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to replace the live tool drive assembly for ST/DS lathes. The live tool drive assembly transfers motion from the servo motor to the castle gear to drive live tools. The image below shows you (4) different types of configurations for the live tool drive assembly. 

  1. Live Tool Drive Assembly (for ST-10/15 machines)
  2. Live Tool Drive Assembly (for ST-40/45 machines)
  3. Live Tool Drive Assembly (for machines with the VB or VDI turret)
  4. Live Tool Drive Assembly (for machines with 24 tool station turret)
  5. Coolant Port Plug
  6. Coolant Nozzle Assembly 

This document applies to the following kits:

  • 93-2592 LIVE TOOL DRIVE ASSY 3K/6K LESS MTR

Prerequisites:

When you install a replacement live tool drive assembly, you must use the coolant port plug and the coolant nozzle assembly from the removed live tool drive assembly. Make sure you install these parts on the replacement live tool drive assembly the way it is shown on the removed live tool drive assembly.

If you replace a live tool drive assembly made before July 2016, you must order a replacement cover. The replacement cover is not included in the 93-2592 service kit.

  • ST-10/15: P/N 25-3388C
  • ST-20/30: P/N 25-2905D
  • ST-20/30 (with the VBS30 Turret): P/N 25-2946D
  • ST-40/45: P/N 25-3524C

ST/DS Lathe - Live Tool Drive Assembly - Replacement

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the [OFF] position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag. 

 Danger: After turning off the machine, wait at least 5 minutes before working in the control cabinet, to allow power to dissipate. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the vector drive to go off completely.

Remove the cover [1] for the live tool drive assembly.

Disconnect the motor cables [2] from the motor.

Remove the motor [1].

Hold the weight of the live tool drive assembly.

Remove the (3) 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" socket-head cap screws (SHCS) [2].

Remove the live tool drive assembly [3].

Remove the coolant nozzle assembly [1] and the coolant-port plug [2] from the removed live tool drive assembly.

Install these components on the replacement live tool drive assembly:

  • coolant nozzle assembly [1]
  • coolant-port plug [2]
  • o-rings [3]
  • motor gasket [7]
  • motor [6]
  • (4) washers [5]
  • (4) SHCS [4]

Hold the weight of the live tool drive assembly.

Install the live tool drive assembly [1].

Install the (3) 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" SHCS [2].

Connect the motor cables to the motor.

Remove the front-fill plug [1] and the rear-drain plug [2].

Use the funnel [4] and fill the live tool drive assembly with the Mobil SHC625 oil [3]. Fill the assembly until the oil [5] drips from the rear drain hole.

Install the front-fill plug [1] and the rear-drain plug [2].

Install the replacement cover for the live tool drive assembly.

Verification

Press [POWER ON] to turn on the machine.

Test the live tooling to ensure everything runs smoothly.
