VMC - Side-Mount Tool Changer - Carousel - Replacement - AD0631

Introduction

This procedure tells how to replace a side-mount tool changer carousel on a VF series standard and super speed; 40 and 50 taper machines.

 You should not do mechanical or electrical machine repairs or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.

  Only authorized personnel with the proper training and certification should do this repair procedure.

Tools Required:

  • "Bear Hug" Socket part # T-1357/B
  • Torx bit socket - T27

 

Machine Requirements:

  • Haas Classic Control M18.XX and below

Removal

1

Remove all tools from the tool changer and the spindle. Mark each tool with the position from the tool changer.

Caution: Do not push [POWER UP/RESTART].

Remove the carousel disc [2].

Remove the tool pocket stop [1].

Change Setting 81 to 0 to prevent carousel movement.

Go into the DEBUG mode.

Push [RECOVER] to show the TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY screen [1].

Push [M] for software 17.XX and later.

Push [Y] three times for software 16.XX and earlier.

The display shows the Manual tool changer operation screen [2].

Push the [DOWN] cursor arrow to lower the tool pocket.

Push [EMERGENCY STOP].

Remove the shoulder bolt [1].

Remove the tool pocket [2] and the tool pocket slide [3] from the carousel.

Release [EMERGENCY STOP].

Push [RECOVER] to go into TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY mode.

Push [M] for software 17.XX and later.

Push [Y] three times for software 16.XX and earlier.

The display shows the Manual Tool Changer Operation screen.

Push the [UP] cursor arrow to lift the tool pocket.

Use tape to attach a metal washer [1] to the pocket up proximity switch to activate the switch.

Make sure the Pocket Up switch value is 1 .

If the value is not 1, make sure the metal washer is in position to activate the switch.

Push the [LEFT] or [RIGHT] cursor arrows to rotate the carousel to the next tool pocket until the Tool in Pos sensor value is 1.

When the tool pocket gets to the staging position, it moves down.

Remove all the retaining screw and the tool pocket.

Push [EMERGENCY STOP].

Use the “bearhug” socket P/N T-1357/B to remove the bearing [2] carousel shaft lock nut [3].

Remove the carousel [1] from the shaft.

Release [EMERGENCY STOP].

Installation

Move the bearings [1] and cam followers [2] to the replacement carousel.

Attach the (6) standoffs [3].

Install the carousel onto the shaft.

Turn the carousel to align the roller bearings [4] with the drum cam [5].

Use the "bearhug" socket (P/N T-1357/B).

Install the carousel-shaft locknut.

Torque the shaft locknut to 85 ft-lb (115 Nm).

Install the first tool pocket into the carousel.

Press [RECOVER] to go into the MANUAL TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY mode.

The display shows the TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY screen.

Press [M] for software 17.XX and higher.

Press [Y] three times for software 16.XX and lower.

The display shows the Manual Tool Changer Operation screen.

Hold the pocket [1] in the up position. Use an applicable tool [2]. For example, use a strong rubber band or use a strong cable tie.

Press the [LEFT] or [RIGHT] cursor arrow again and again to rotate the carousel to the next tool pocket.

Make sure Tool in Pos sensor value is 1.

Remove the rubber band.

Install the next tool pocket into the carousel.

Repeat steps 5-8 to install the other pockets.

  Do not install the last pocket at this time.

Press the [DOWN] cursor arrow to move the air cylinder into the pocket down position.

Press [EMERGENCY STOP].

Remove the metal washer from the pocket-up proximity sensor.

Change Setting 81 to [1].

Install the slider [1] and the last tool pocket [2] together.

Note: The illustration in the next step shows a larger view of the assembly.

The tool pocket and slider fit together as shown.

Insert the tool pocket screw.

Hold the pocket down. This aligns the hole in the air-cylinder shaft with the hole for the slider.

Insert the shoulder bolt through the hole.

Note: The illustration in the next step shows the assembly from the other side.

The hole in the air-cylinder shaft [1] aligns with the hole for the slider [2]. This alignment lets you insert the shoulder bolt [3].

Tighten the shoulder bolt.

Use the (4) screws to insert the tool pocket stop.

In a cross pattern, torque the screws to 50 ft-lb (68 Nm).

Press [RECOVER] to go into the MANUAL TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY mode.

The display shows the TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY screen.

Press [M] for software 17.XX and higher.

Press [Y] three times for software 16.XX and lower.

The display shows the Manual Tool Changer Operation screen.

Press the [UP] and [DOWM] cursor arrows many times. Make sure the pocket moves up and down correctly.

Press [E] to go out of MANUAL TOOL CHANGER RECOVERY mode.

Press [MDI]. Press [ATC/FWD] or [ATC/REV]. Make sure the tool changer operates correctly.

Change Setting 7 to ON.
