Introduction

Use this procedure to bleed the rotary brakes on Non-reboot UMC-750.  For Reboot machines refer to AD0496 UMC Rotary Brake Bleeding - Procedure.

UMC-750:  To identify which iteration of these machine models you are dealing with, refer to UMC-750 Machine Version - Identification.

This document applies to the following service kit:

  • T-0062C UMC ROTARY BLEED TOOL W/SHRADER VLV

Assemble T-0062C

1

Assemble the BLEEDING TOOL and the GAUGE TOOL as shown on the picture.

Use the teflon tape to seal the fitting threads.

The machine has to have the Schrader valves installed on the rotaries bleeding ports in order to use T-0062C.

If you working on the machine that does not have the Schrader valves installed, use the 93-2956 together with the T-0062C. Refer to the 93-2956 - Installation - AD0426 for more information.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that the arrow [1] on the  checkvalve body oriented correctly.

Evaluate the Axis Brake Operation

1

 Note: You will need a service kit T-0062C, Rotary Bleed Kit, to be able to complete this procedure.

Push [ZERO RETURN]. Push [ALL].

Jog the B Axis to +90 °.

Operate an M11; code in MDI mode to unclamp the B-Axis brake. The pressure gauge [1] on the B-Axis booster shows zero.

Operate an M10; code to clamp the B-Axis brake.

The gauge shows 35-45 psi when the brake is clamped, and 0 when the brake is unclamped.

Operate an M11; code to unclamp the B Axis brake.

Disconnect the sensor cable from the B Axis booster unit.

Connect the leads [2] from a digital multimeter to the sensor [3] contacts.

Operate an M10; code to clamp the B-Axis brake. Then operate an M11; code to unclamp it.

The multimeter shows OL (open) when the brake is clamped, and 0.1 to 0.4 Ohms when it is unclamped.

You must bleed the brake if the multimeter display does not change when the brake clamps.

Perform the same test on the C Axis booster to see if it needs to be bled as well.

2

Perform this step to verify the hydraulic brake pressure.

Make sure that the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever [1] is turned all the way out counter clockwise.

Install the gauge tool onto the Schrader valve and tighten the nut [2] on the bottom of the tool.

Turn the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever all the way clockwise to open the Schrader valve.

Command the rotary brake to clamp and read the pressure on the gauge.

When the hydraulic system is properly bled, the oil pressure will be roughly 10 times greater then the air pressure applied to the booster.

  • UMC-750/P B axis pressure should read 800-1000 psi.
  • UMC-750SS B and C axes pressure should read 350-400 psi.

IMPORTANT: NEVER set the brake booster air regulator pressure above 50 psi. The pressure above 50 psi can permanently damage the rotary brake components.

NOTE: Make sure that the  Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever is turned all the way counter clockwise before removing the gauge tool from the rotary.

Disable the Rotary Brake Pressure Monitoring

1

On the machine with the NGC disable the rotary axis brake pressure monitoring by changing the rotary configuration in the rotary settings.

The configuration with the -P11 [1]  at the end has the brake monitoring ON.

The configuration with the -P10 [2] at the end has the brake monitoring OFF.

Refer to the Rotary - Enable and Disable - NGC for more information.

On the machine with the  CHC, change parameters:

  • 1132 B AIR BRAKE PRESSURE SENSING METHOD  from 1 (pressure monitoring ON) to 0 (pressure monitoring OFF) and physically disconnect the brake pressure sensor for the B axis.
  • 1138 C AIR BRAKE PRESSURE SENSING METHOD  from 1 (pressure monitoring ON) to 0 (pressure monitoring OFF) and physically disconnect the brake pressure sensor for the C axis.

NOTE: Make sure to turn the brake pressure monitoring back ON after bleeding the brake system.

B Axis Bleed Instructions

1

NOTE: The illustration shows the UMC-750SS B axis rotary.  The UMC-750 B axis bleeding process is identical. UMC-750 B axis booster located on the side of the B axis rotary housing.

Make sure that the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever [1] is turned all the way out counter clockwise.

Install the bleeding tool onto the Schrader valve and tighten the nut [2] on the bottom of the tool.

Make sure that the oil reservoir on the brake booster is filled to the top line.

Route the 1/4" clear tube from the tool into the oil reservoir [4] on top of the booster.

Turn the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever all the way clockwise to open the Schrader valve.

Type the following code into the MDI:

G103 P1 ;

M11 ;

G04 P5. ;

M10;

G04 P5. ;

M99 ;

When running the program, observe the fluid movement in the clear 1/4" return line [3] between the Schrader valve and the fluid reservoir.

The fluid will move from the Schrader valve towards the fluid reservoir while the B axis brake is clamped.

Once there is no more air bubbles present in the line, run the program for an additional 20 minutes.

Once the system is bled,  turn the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever [1] all the way counter clockwise and remove the bleeding tool from the Schrader valve.

Verify the brake system operation and enable the brake pressure monitoring.

NOTE: Refer to the Step 2 of the Evaluate the Axis Brake Operation section.

C Axis Bleed Instructions

1

The setup to bleed the C axis brake on the UMC-750SS is similar with the B axis bleeding setup.

The differences are the bleeding port [1] location as well as the hydraulic booster location

NOTE: Install the Schrader valve if the rotary does not have one installed previously. Refer to the Step 1 of the  B Axis Bleed Instructions.

2

NOTE: Make sure that the X, Y, Z, B axes are at home position and the B axis is at -30 degrees before starting the C axis bleed program. The program will move the B and C axes in 10 degree increments and exersize the C axis brake between each move to help guide the air out of the hydraulic brake circuit. The B axis will move from -30 to 110 degree and back, make sure that there is clearance for the workholding if it still attached to the platter.

Type the following code into the MDI:

G103 P1 ;

M97 P100 L14 ;

M97 P200 L14 ;

M99 ;

N100 M12 ;

G04 P5. ;

M13 ;

G04 P5. ;

G91 ;

G01 B10. C10. F50. ;

M99 ;

N200 M12 ;

G04 P5. ;

M13 ;

G04 P5. ;

G91 ;

G01 B-10. C-10. ;

M99 ;

You can also download the NC file and run it in memory.

3

When running the program, observe the fluid movement in the clear 1/4" return line between the Schrader valve and the fluid reservoir.

The fluid will move from the Schrader valve towards the fluid reservoir while the C axis brake is clamped.

Once there is no more air bubbles present in the line, run the program for an additional 20 minutes.

Once the system is bled,  turn the Schrader valve OPEN/CLOSE lever [1] all the way counter clockwise and remove the bleeding tool from the Schrader valve.

Verify the hydraulic brake pressure and enable the brake pressure monitoring.

NOTE: Refer to the Step 2 of the Evaluate the Axis Brake Operation section.

Refer to the Hydraulic Rotary Brake Booster – Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Refer to the video that show the process of bleeding the brake on the UMC-750 B axis rotary.
