Umbrella Tool Changer to Spindle Alingment - Introduction

Before aligning the tool changer make sure you have Set Parameter 257 (Spindle Orientation Offset) and Set Parameter 64 (Z-Axis Tool Change Offset).

Remove Tool Changer Support Arm Cover

Push EMERGENCY STOP.

Find the cover [2] for the arm that supports the tool changer.

Remove the (8) socket head cap screws  [1] from the cover.

Note: Two of the screws are outside the machine enclosure.

Pull the cover out of the arm.

Loosen the four hex head bolts [3] that hold the arm to the column.

Remove only 1 of the 4 HHB that hold the arm to the column [4].

Align The Tool Changer

Release EMERGENCY STOP.

Verify no tools are in the spindle.

Go to MDI mode. Push ATC FWD.

Push FEED HOLD while the carousel moves to the spindle.

Use a pry bar [3] to move the tool changer.

Move the tool changer until the tool alignment key [2] aligns with the spindle dog [1].

Tighten the (4) hex head bolts [4] that hold the tool changer support arm to the column.

Torque the bolts to 80 Ft-lbs (356 N-m).

Push CYCLE START to complete the tool change.

Install the tool changer arm cover.

Install the (8) tool changer arm cover screws.

Do some tool changes and make sure the tool changer engages the tools evenly.

Z-Axis Tool Change Offset

Power on the machine in service mode.

Set the grid offsets - refer to NGC - Axis Grid Offset

Push [ZERO RETURN].

Push [ALL].

Handle jog the X and Y axes until the center of the table is under the spindle.

Go to [MDI] mode.

Push [ATC FWD].

Push [EMERGENCY STOP] immediately after the door to the umbrella tool changer opens.

Put an empty toolholder in the pocket adjacent to the spindle.

Mount a 0.0005" indicator and mag-base on the machine table.

Put the tip [1] of the indicator on the bottom of the toolholder.

Set the indicator to 0.

Slide the mag-base toward the spindle.

Do not let anything touch the tip of the indicator.

Remove the toolholder from the umbrella tool changer pocket.

Release [EMERGENCY STOP].

Push [RECOVER].

Follow the on-screen prompts.

Put the toolholder into the spindle.

Slide the indicator under the spindle.

Do not let anything touch the tip of the indicator.

Handle jog the Z Axis up or down until the indicator goes back to zero.

Note: This puts toolholder at the same height in the spindle as in the umbrella pocket.

Push [DIAGNOSTIC].

Navigate to the Factory tab in the Parameters tab.

Type 3.078 and push [F1].

Push [F2] Set Z Axis Tool Changer Offset.

The Z Axis Tool Changer Offset Done prompt appears.

Push [5% RAPID], [ZERO RETURN], [Z], then [HOME] G28.

The Z Axis moves to the tool change height.

If the tool change height is correct, the indicator goes back to zero.

If the indicator does not go back to zero, repeat this procedure

Caution: You must always remove your Haas Control Key and power off the machine when you finish work on the machine.

Be sure to set the spindle orientation offset.

Refer to Next Generation Control - Umbrella Tool Changer - Spindle Orientation Offset.

Do several tool changes to test the tool changer operation.

Note: When you are finished, inform the customer they will need to reset the tool length offsets.

Spindle Orientation Offset - Introduction

The spindle orientation offset parameter is Parameter 4.082 in machines that have the Next Generation Control. Parameter 4.082 sets the position of the spindle dogs in relation to the tool pocket. This procedure tells you how to set Parameter 4.082.

Tools Required

  1. Haas Control Key
  2. Dial Indicator
  3. Magnetic Base

Set Umbrella Tool Changer - Spindle Orientation Offset

Power on the machine with your Haas Control Service Key.

If the machine has a gearbox, run this code in MDI mode:

M42;

This puts the machine in high gear and makes the spindle easier to turn with your hand.

Make sure no tool is in the spindle. Make sure no tool is in the pocket that faces the spindle.

Put the magnetic base with the indicator on the table.

Handle jog the machine to indicate the alignment of the spindle dogs and the X Axis.

The spindle dogs must be aligned within 0.010" (0.254 mm) of the X Axis.

Push [DIAGNOSTIC].

Navigate to the Factory tab in the Parameters tab.

Type 4.082 and Push [F1].

Push [F3] Set Spindle Orientation Offset.

The Spindle Orientation Offset Done prompt shows.

Move the spindle dogs out of orientation.

Push [RECOVER].

Select Tool Change Recovery and push [ENTER].

Push [M] to select Manual Recovery.

Push [O] to select Spindle Orientation.

Push [O] again to orient the spindle.

Repeat Step 2 to make sure the spindle dogs are aligned correctly.

Push [E] to Exit.

Make sure Parameter 4.082 is correct:

  1. Go to [MDI] mode.
  2. Push [ATC FWD]. Push [FEED HOLD] to verify that the spindle dogs line up with the tool changer key. Push [CYCLE START] to finish the tool change cycle.
  3. Push [ATC REV].
  4. Put a tool in the spindle.
  5. Push [ATC FWD].

Make sure the machine has a smooth tool change.

 Important: You must always remove your Haas Control Key and power off the machine when you finish work on the machine.

If the machine does not does not have a smooth tool change, the machine has (1) of these conditions:

  • Parameter 4.082 is not correct. You must repeat this procedure.
  • Umbrella tool changer is misaligned. Refer to VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer to Spindle - Alignment.

Push [Zero Return] then [All].

HANDLE JOG the X and Y Axes until the center of the table is under the spindle.

Go to MDI mode. Push [ATC FWD].

Push [EMERGENCY STOP] immediately after the door to the umbrella tool changer opens.

Put an empty toolholder in the pocket adjacent to the spindle.

Put a 0.0005" indicator and magnetic base on the machine table. Put the tip [1] of the indicator on the bottom of the toolholder. Set the indicator to 0.

Slide the magnetic base toward the spindle. Do not let anything touch the tip [1] of the indicator.

Remove the toolholder from the umbrella tool changer pocket.

Release [EMERGENCY STOP].

Push [RECOVER]. Follow the on-screen prompts.

Put the toolholder into the spindle.

Slide the indicator under the spindle. Do not let anything touch the tip of the indicator.

HANDLE JOG the Z Axis up or down until the indicator goes back to zero.

 Note: This puts toolholder at the same height in the spindle as in the umbrella pocket.

Record the MACHINE Z Position value [1].

Multiply the MACHINE Z Position value by the value in Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT).

 Note: The value of Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT) is not the same for each machine.

In this example the value of Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT) is 554872 [2].

(Z position value) x (Z Ratio) = Calculated value

-0.0093 x 554872 = -5160

Push [EMERGENCY STOP].

Change Setting 7 to OFF.

If the calculated value is negative, add the absolute value to Parameter 64 [1]. If the calculated value is positive, subtract the value from Parameter 64 [1].

Release [EMERGENCY STOP].

Push [RESET].

Push [ZERO RETURN], [Z], then [SINGLE]. This applies the new value of Parameter 64.

Push 5% [RAPID], [ZERO RETURN], [Z], then [HOME G28].

The Z Axis moves to the tool change height. If the tool change height is correct, the indicator goes back to zero.

If the indicator does not go back to zero, repeat this procedure.

Change Setting 7 to ON.

Make sure Parameter 257 is correct. Refer to VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer - Set Parameter 257 - Spindle Orientation Offset.

Command some tool changes to make sure the tool changer operates correctly.

Push [OFFSET] one or two times to go to the [TOOL OFFSET] page. Set the H (LENGTH) values again.

Make sure no tool is in the spindle. Make sure no tool is in the pocket that faces the spindle.

Push [EMERGENCY STOP].

Go into DEBUG mode

Push [POSIT].

Select the VAR tab [1].

 Note: If you have software version 15.xx or earlier, navigate to the VAR tab.

Push [WRITE/ENTER]

Select the RAW DATA tab [2].

Turn the spindle dogs with your hand. Turn until the SPINDLE POS [3] value is between 0 and 2000. Make the value as near as possible to 0.

Attach the spindle lock tool (T-1635). This tool aligns the spindle dogs.

 Caution: Make sure the SPINDLE POS value stays between 0 and 2000. If the value is not accurate, you will crash the machine.

Enter the SPINDLE POS value into Parameter 257.

Exit DEBUG mode.

Remove the Spindle Lock Tool (T-1635).

Test the spindle orientation:

  1. Put a tool in the spindle.
  2. Go to MDI mode.
  3. Push [ATC FWD].
  4. Push [ATC REV].

Make sure the machine has a smooth tool change.

If the machine does not does not have a smooth tool change, the machine has (1) of these conditions:

  • The spindle orientation was not done correctly. You must repeat the procedure.
  • An umbrella tool changer alignment is necessary. Refer to VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer to Spindle - Alignment.

Umbrella Tool Changer - Set Parameter 257 - Spindle Orientation Offset - Service

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to set Parameter 257 (Spindle Orientation Offset) on a machine that has an umbrella tool changer.

This procedure is only for service technicians. For customers, use the procedure above which does not go into debug mode.

Tools Required

  • Spindle Lock Tool T-1635

If the machine has a gearbox, operate this code in MDI mode:

M41;

This puts the machine in low gear and makes the spindle easier to turn with your hand.

Make sure no tool is in the spindle. Make sure no tool is in the pocket that faces the spindle.

Push [EMERGENCY STOP].

Go into DEBUG mode

Push [POSIT].

Select the VAR tab [1].

 Note: If you have software version 15.xx or earlier, push [PAGE UP] or [PAGE DOWN] to go to the VAR tab.

Push [WRITE/ENTER].

Select the RAW DATA tab [2].

Turn the spindle dogs with your hand. Turn until the SPINDLE POS [3] value is between 0 and 2000. Make the value as near as possible to 0.

Attach the spindle lock tool (T-1635). This tool aligns the spindle dogs.

 Caution: Make sure the SPINDLE POS value stays between 0 and 2000. If the value is not accurate, you will crash the machine.

Enter the SPINDLE POS value into Parameter 257.

Exit DEBUG mode.

Make sure the machine has a smooth tool change.

  • The spindle orientation was not done correctly. You must repeat the procedure.
  • An umbrella tool changer alignment is necessary. Refer to VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer to Spindle - Alignment.
