Regen Vector Drive - Replacement - AD0745

- Jump to Section - 1. Introduction 2. Electrical Safety 3. Regen Vector Drive - Replacement (7 steps) 4. Regen Vector Drive - AC Filter - Replacement (3 steps) Back to Top

Introduction

This procedure covers how to install the following Service Kits:

  1. 93-4074 - Regen Vector Drive - 40HP
  2. 93-4076 - AC Filter - Regen Vector Drive

The Regen Vector Drive-40HP can be used on all ST-20 thru ST-45 machines including Y-axis and L version machines.

Important: The Regen Vector Drive cannot be used on ST series machines that have a Dual Spindle or Sub-spindle option. Also, machines must have the HD style transormer kit to be compatible with the Regen Vector Drive.

These assemblies are key components of the electrical cabinet. Before replacing these parts make sure to go through the troubleshooting guide as well as other resources for determining the root cause of the failure.

Regen Vector Drive Software Versions Compatibility:

  • 100.20.000.1000 and later

Regen Vector Drive Software Versions Not Supported:

  • 100.21.000.1102
  • 100.21.000.1110
  • 100.21.000.1111
  • 100.21.000.1142

Required Firmware Version:

  • Regen VD FW V1.13

Important: These components need to be handled carefully. Review the Electrical Safety section below before starting this procedure.

Electrical Safety

DANGER: Working with the electrical services required for CNC machines is extremely hazardous and can result in serious injury or death.

Before connecting line wires to the CNC:

  • Turn off all power to the machine at the source.
  • Perform a Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedure to ensure the power remains off during service.
  • Verify that power has been disconnected by using an AC voltage detector on all incoming lines.

If you are uncertain about how to safely disconnect power or perform LOTO procedures:

  • Do not proceed.
  • Contact qualified personnel or obtain appropriate assistance before continuing.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in electrical shock, equipment damage, or fatal injury.

Danger: Before beginning any work inside the control cabinet, verify that the High Voltage indicator light on the 320V Power Supply / Vector Drive has been off for a minimum of five (5) minutes. This waiting period ensures that residual voltage has dissipated and reduces the risk of electric shock.

Certain service procedures involve high-risk electrical components and may pose serious injury or fatality hazards. Technicians must not attempt any procedure unless they have a complete understanding of the steps involved and the associated risks.

If there is any uncertainty regarding a procedure, contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) to arrange for a qualified service technician.

Regen Vector Drive - Replacement

1

Push [Power OFF]:

Set the main circuit breaker to the [OFF] position. Lock the main circuit breaker.

Danger: After turning off the machine, wait at least 5 minutes before working in the control cabinet, allow power to dissipate. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the front of the vector drive to go off completely.

2

After waiting for power to dissipate, unfasten the 4 PPHS mounting screws [1] so that you can remove the Regen Vector Drive (RVD).

Important: Make a note of the positioning of each wire on the Vector Drive Terminal block. Refer to the Electrical Diagram on the Regen Vector Drive - Troubleshooting Guide for more information on how to wire the RVG.

3

Remove the wires from the connection terminal after labeling them, and remove the RVD from the Control Cabinet.

4

Carefully install the new RVD into the control cabinet. Mount it with the same 4 PPHCS. Mounting this in place will make it easier to wire the connectors and keep the control cabinet organized.

Note: When handling the RVD, do not hold the component from the terminal edge, hold the RVD from the sides.

5

[1]Connect the cable coming from the AC Filter into the RVD terminal at the Input 230VAC connection point. (contacts 5, 6, and 7 are the A, B, and C lines respectively.

Connect the ground cable to terminal 8 or 9 which are labeled GROUND.

[2]Connect the Spindle Motor cable to the Output to Motor connection point of the RVD (contacts 10, 11, 12 are A, B, C respectively).

[3]Connect  The Servo Amplifier cable to the 320VDC Bus contacts. Either contacts 1&2 or contacts 3&4 based on availability.

[4]Make sure that cable from the Main transformer TB2 connection are connected to J3 as shown. Also make sure the Vector drive communication line from the Maincon PCB J13 is connected to J4 of the Regen Vector Drive.

Note: Make sure these jumpers are connected in the proper location on the Regen Vector Drive. Swapping these connections can cause damage to the RVD.

This image shows the complete wiring for the Regen Vector Drive. More details can be found from the Regen Troubleshooting Guide.

Important: Make sure that the Ferrite Filter is installed properly on the Output to Motor cables [2]. This filter prevents alarms from being generated on the machine.

6

Make sure that the Regen Vector Drive has the proper firmware installed. To update the firmware, refer to the I/O PCB, Regen VD Firmware procedure as well as the Regen Vector Drive - TSG.

Note: Updating the firmware is only supported for software 100.20.000.1000.

7

Note: If replacing the AC Filter Assembly as well, move to the next section before performing this step.

After you've verified the vector drive is wired correctly:

Set the main breaker to the ON position.

Push [POWER ON] on the Haas Control.

Make sure there are no alarms related to the Regen Vector Drive. Refer HERE for a list of common alarms.

Regen Vector Drive - AC Filter - Replacement

Important: If you are replacing the AC Filter assembly, review the Electrical Safety section above before working on the machine.

Note: If you are replacing both the Regen Vector Drive and the AC Filter, do one replacement at a time. Once the Regen Vector Drive has been replaced, then replace the AC Filter assembly.

1

After allowing power to dissipate from the control cabinet, begin by noting the wiring going to and from the AC Filter assembly. There are cables coming from the main transformer unit, and cable 33-0634 which goes from the AC Filter PCB to the I/O PCB.  There are also cables going from the AC Filter assembly to the Regen Vector Drive. Label each wire if needed.

2

Remove the Main Control Breaker mounting bracket[1] to gain access to the AC Filter assembly[2]. To remove the bracket, unfasten the 4 hex nuts[3] from the panel mounting pins. Then remove the AC Filter by unfastening the 4 mounting Phillips pan head cap screws[3].

3

Mount the replacement AC Filter using the same mounting PPHCS. Then connect the wires coming from the TB2 connection of the Transformer.

These input lines should go in the 1, 3, 5 terminal contacts.

Connect the cables coming from the Regen Vector Drive to the AC Filter at terminals 2, 4, 6.

Also make sure that the  33-0634 cable coming from AC Filter PCB is connected to P1 of the I/O PCB.

Note: If the machine has a Safety Device, P1 on the I/O PCB may be be occupied by cable 33-0344B. In this case, connect the 33-0634 to the Filter Over-Voltage connector on the Safety Device cable.
