50-Taper - TRP - O-Ring - Rebuild Kit

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to rebuild your 50-taper Tool Release Piston (TRP). The o-rings supply air-tight seals for the components of the TRP. Worn o-rings can cause a decrease in the air pressure that pushes the TRP pistons. A decrease in the air pressure can cause the TRP to push with less force. Replace the o-rings to prevent incorrect TRP operation.

Operation:

  1. The tool release button is pushed. High pressure air comes into the TRP.
  2. Air goes into the housing and pushes down on the pistons.
  3. The pistons push down on the shaft to release the tool.
  4. The spring forces the shaft to retract after the air is removed.
  5. Some TRP models have an additional air input to help the shaft retract.

Install Rebuild Kit

The illustration shows these configurations:

  • Through-Spindle Coolant (TSC) [A]
  • No TSC [B]

Keep the shims [1].

Disassemble as shown.

Clean parts shown.

Apply a thick layer of grease to:

  • the o-rings
  • the inner diameter of the housing walls
  • the outer diameter of the spacers

Do not use too much grease.

Install the new o-rings in the opposite sequence of step 3.

Use the shims [1] removed in step 2.

Torque the 1/2-13 socket head cap screws (SHCS) [2] to 80 ft-lb (108 Nm).

Torque the 3/8-16 SHCS [3] (9" piston) to 45 ft-lb (61 Nm).

Torque the 1/2-13 SHCS [3] (10" piston) to 80 ft-lb (108 Nm).

The illustration shows these configurations:

  • TSC [A]
  • No TSC [B]

For TSC, apply a drop of red Loctite to the shaft threads. Torque the bearing holder [1] to 100 ft-lb (136 Nm).

For non-TSC, tighten the shaft collar [2] completely on the shaft. Torque the collar screw to 10 ft-lb (14 Nm).
