Introduction

This installation procedure will show how to install the robot safety devices interface box. This box allows for the robot and safety device to communicate with the Haas machine.

Throughout the years, Haas Automation has made design updates to the interface box. The current designs are shown in the image. The interface box for the HRP-1 [1] has an additional connection for the robot power. The interface box for the HRP-2/3 & Cobot [2] has the 3 connections - Robot Signal, Light Curtain, and Safety Device.

These robot safety devices can be used to protect the user from the robot. With this updated interface box, the user has the choice of robot safety devices to find the one that works best with his application.

NOTE: For any troubleshooting information on connecting the interface box with a robot safety device, refer to the Area Scanner - Troubleshooting Guide or Light Curtain - Troubleshooting Guide.

Machine Requirements:

  • HRP-1, HRP-2, HRP-3 or COBOT
  • Haas Autodoor or Auto Window
  • I/O PCB board 34-349XB or later

Software Requirements:

  • For HRP-1/2/3 Machines must have - 100.21.000.1120 version or higher
  • For Cobot-5/10/15 Machines must have - 100.24.000.1001 version or higher

This procedure applies the following service kits:

  1. 93-3806 ELECT INTERFACE LIGHT CURTAIN HRP-1
  2. 93-3911 ELECT INTERFACE LIGHT CURTAIN HRP-2/3

NOTE: The Haas COBOT is compatible with the HRP-2/3 interface box.

Important: If you are trying to move a Robot or Cobot to a different machine, other options need to be purchased. Refer to the tables below for what else needs to be purchased. The install kits include the Electrical Interface box in the 93-3806 and 93-3911.

Power Off

Caution: When you do maintenance or repair on CNC machines and their components, you must always follow basic safety precautions. This decreases the risk of injury and mechanical damage.

  • Set the main circuit breaker to the [OFF] position.

Danger: Before beginning any work inside the control cabinet the High Voltage indicator light on the 320V Power Supply / Vector Drive must have been off for at least 5 minutes.

Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not fully understand. If you have any doubts about doing a procedure contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service visit.

Interface Box Removal

1

If replacing a first generation interface box with a second generation interface box, follow the interface box removal steps:

Disconnect the robot signal cable [1] and robot RJ-45 cable [2] from the interface box. Leave the ferrite [3] installed onto the RJ-45 cable [2].

Disconnect the interlock cable [4] from the interface box.

NOTE: HRP-1 interface boxes have the 230VAC power cable [5] whereas HRP-2/3 and COBOT interface boxes do not. Make sure to disconnect the power cable [5] from all HRP-1 interface boxes and remove cables inside the control cabinet on the Main Transformer [6] terminals 77 and 78.

Remove the 24VDC Power Supply [7] to the left side of the control cabinet. Disconnect the power cable [8] connected to the PSUP at P3.

Disconnect the terminal block connections [9]  on the I/O PCB at TB-1B and TB-3B.

Disconnect the cable [10] plugged into the I/O PCB at P1.

Disconnect the RJ-45 cable [11] at the USB to Ethernet adapter near the MAINCON PCB. Leave the ferrite [12] installed on the Ethernet adapter cable.

IMPORTANT: Make sure to keep the user relays [13] installed at K9 & K10 and the jumper installed on P1 of the I/O PCB. These remain the same in both first and second generation interface boxes.

Remove the interface box attached to the machine enclosure with magnets.

Interface Box Install

1

Find the proper interface box mounting location—somewhere in between the control cabinet and the robot.

The interface box has magnetic mounts to attach to the machine's sheet metal. Mount the interface box [1] onto the side of the machine.

Route the interface box cables [2] along the enclosure with magnetic mounts and zipties. Route the cable through the bottom of the electrical cabinet.

2

Connect the robot signal cable [1] and robot RJ-45 cable [2] from the robot control to the interface box. Make sure the ferrite [3] is installed onto the RJ-45 cable [2].

Connect the interlock cable [4] from the robot safety device (either interlock fence, area scanner or light curtain) to the interface box.

IMPORTANT: The light curtain has both a receiver and emitter cable [5]—install both cables into the interface box. If no light curtain option, leave the light curtain emitter connector [5] on the interface box empty.

NOTE: HRP-1 interface boxes have the 230VAC power cable [6] whereas HRP-2/3 and Cobot interface boxes do not. Make sure to connect the robot power cable to the HRP-1 interface box and install cables inside the control cabinet on the Main Transformer [7] terminals 77 and 78. There is no need to do this for HRP-2/3 or Haas Cobot.

Mount the 24VDC Power Supply [8] to the left side of the control cabinet and plug into connector labeled 24V PS on cable 33-8562C. Connect cable 33-1281 [9] from the 24VDC Power Supply [8] and into P3 on the PSUP PCB.

Install the terminal block connections [10] to the I/O PCB at TB-1B and TB-3B.

Connect the cable [11] plugged into the I/O PCB at P1.

Connect the RJ-45 cable [12] at the USB to Ethernet adapter near the MAINCON PCB. Make sure the ferrite [13] is installed on the Ethernet adapter cable.

IMPORTANT: If replacing a first generation interface box with a second generation interface box, make sure that the jumpers and user relays are installed on the I/O PCB. If not, make sure to install the user relays [14] at K9 & K10 and a jumper at JP1 on the I/O PCB.

3

Power the machine ON.

Verify the robot's functionality by jogging the robot.

Verify the robot safety device by triggering and making sure the safety device icon shows up on the screen.
