CM-1 Z-axis Motor Cable - Replacement

Introduction

This procedure can be used for the following service kit:

  • 93-4962 - CM-1 Z-axis Encoder/Power Cable Service Kit

This kit includes the following components:

  1. 32-1368 - Z-axis motor power/brake cable [1]
  2. 32-2373B - Z-axis motor encoder cable [2]
  3. 59-1600 - 3/8" ID steel clamp w/one mounting hole [3]

Note: if you are field installing the WIPS option onto a CM-1 machine built between 2/1/2023 and 11/27/2024 check to see the part number of the cable going to the Z-axis amplifier. If the cable is part number 32-2373A then this kit needs to be ordered.

Z-axis Servo Motor Cable - Replacement

Jog the Z-axis up near the top of travel so that it is easier to access the Z-axis motor.

Press [Power Off] on the Haas pendant to power down the machine.

 DANGER: Working with the electrical services required for CNC machines is extremely hazardous and can result in serious injury or death.

Before connecting line wires to the CNC:

  • Turn off all power to the machine at the source.
  • Perform a Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedure to ensure the power remains off during service.
  • Verify that power has been disconnected by using an AC voltage detector on all incoming lines.

If you are uncertain about how to safely disconnect power or perform LOTO procedures:

  • Do not proceed.
  • Contact qualified personnel or obtain appropriate assistance before continuing.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in electrical shock, equipment damage, or fatal injury.

 Danger: Before beginning any work inside the control cabinet, verify that the High Voltage indicator light on the 320V Power Supply / Vector Drive has been off for a minimum of five (5) minutes. This waiting period ensures that residual voltage has dissipated and reduces the risk of electric shock.

Certain service procedures involve high-risk electrical components and may pose serious injury or fatality hazards. Technicians must not attempt any procedure unless they have a complete understanding of the steps involved and the associated risks.

If there is any uncertainty regarding a procedure, contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) to arrange for a qualified service technician.

Once the machine is fully powered off, remove the Z-axis motor power and encoder cables from the motor.

Use a small Phillips screw driver to loosen the encoder cable connector [1] and the power cable connector [2] from the motor.

Note: The motor connectors can be accessed from above the machine as shown in the image.

Once the screws [3] are loosened, disconnect the connectors.

Once the cables are disconnected from the motor, separate the motor cables from the cable ties routing them to the electrical cabinet. These cables will be replaced with the new cables in the kit.

Inside the electrical cabinet disconnect the following cables:

  1. Disconnect the Z-axis encoder cable from channel 3 [1] of the right side of the Maincon PCB. Remove the ferrite filter from the cable.
  2. Disconnect the Z-axis motor power cable from the Z-axis servo amplifier [2]. Make sure to disconnect the ground from the chassis below the amplifier [3].
  3. Disconnect the Z-axis motor brake cable (same as motor power cable) from P3 or P4 or P5 on the IO PCB [4]. The brake cable can be connected to any of these connectors.

After these cables are disconnected, remove the cables from the machine.

Use the new cables to make the following connections in the electrical cabinet:

  1. Connect the encoder cable 32-2373B to channel 3 on the Maincon PCB [1]. Install the ferrite filter [2] onto the new cable in the same position as the other axis encoder cables.
  2. Connect the Z-axis motor power cable 32-1368 [3] to the Z-axis Amplifier [4]. Connect the ground wire to the chassis below the amplifier [5].
  3. Connect the other end the power cable 32-1368 [3] to the IO PCB at P3 or P4 or P5 [6]. Route both the encoder and power cables out of the electrical cabinet and towards the top of the column so that they can be connected to the Z-axis motor.
  4. Install the connectors onto the Z-axis motor. 
    • The encoder cable goes to the connector on the top of the motor. The angled connector [7] should be pointing down and to the right when installed. 
    • The power cable gets connected to the middle of the motor. Make sure the connector is oriented correctly where the cable feeds down [8] towards the motor shaft as shown in the image.

Note: Use a Phillips screwdriver to secure both the encoder cable and power cable connectors to the motor.

Check the cable clamp [1] that holds the power cable to the chassis. The clamp needs to be the exposed steel clamp and not have any rubber insulation that holds the cable.

If the clamp is rubberized [2], replace it with the steel clamp [3] that came in the service kit. Make sure that the steel is on the exposed cable shielding [4] and not the rubber insulation of the cable [5].

After the cables are installed, power on the machine and make sure the machine runs without generating any alarms.
