Introduction

This procedure tells you how to adjust the pre-charge for the Tool Release Piston (TRP) of a 30 or 40-taper spindle. Complete this procedure before you adjust the TRP clamp/unclamp switches.

The following service video shows how to set the TRP precharge.

  NOTE:  This  service video is for reference only and does not replace the written procedure. 

Belt/Gearbox Drive - Tool Release Piston - Pre-charge - Adjustment

 Caution: Do not perform this procedure on a machine that has through-spindle coolant (TSC). This damages the TSC system.

Find the knob on the pre-charge air regulator. Turn the knob counter clockwise until it stops.

Make sure Parameter 149 PRE-CHARGE DELAY is set to 300.

Make sure no tool is in the spindle.

Push the [Tool Release Button].

 Note: If the pre-charge is not correctly adjusted, you hear a loud noise when the piston hits the drawbar.

Turn the main air pressure regulator clockwise one half turn.

Push the [Tool Release Button].

If you hear the TRP hit the drawbar, turn the main air pressure regulator clockwise one quarter turn.

 Caution: Do not increase the pressure too much. Only increase the pressure until you cannot hear the TRP hit the drawbar.

Inline Drive - Tool Release Piston - Pre-charge - Adjustment

 Caution: Do not perform this procedure on a machine that has through-spindle coolant (TSC). This damages the TSC system.

To assemble a pressure gauge assembly:

  • Attach the gauge [1] to the tee-fitting [3].
  • Attach the (2) quick-release fittings [2] to the tee-fitting [3].
  • Cut the 1/4" tubing in half. Connect the (2) pieces to the quick-release fittings [2].

Remove the toolholder from the spindle.

Close the primary air valve. This stops the air supply to the machine.

Install a pressure gauge at the output-side of the pre-charge regulator.

 Note: The configuration in the illustrations show one example. This is not the correct configuration for each machine.

Open the primary air valve.

Turn the pre-charge regulator adjustment knob counterclockwise to the fully out position.

 Note: For newer machines, the pre-charge regulator is not adjustable. There is no adjustment knob.

Run this code in MDI mode:

M59 P1120;

Set the pre-charge regulator to 30 psi (2.1 bar).

 Note: On newer machines, the pre-charge regulator has no adjustment knob. You cannot adjust the pressure.

Read the pressure gauge. Make sure the pressure is 30 psi (2.1 bar). If the pre-charge regulator cannot keep the pressure at 30 psi (2.1 bar), you must replace it.

Push [RESET].

Close the primary air valve.

Lock the adjustment knob on the regulator.

Remove the pressure gauge from the pre-charge regulator.

Open the primary air valve.

Through Spindle Coolant - Tool Release Piston - Pre-charge - Adjustment

To assemble a pressure gauge assembly:

  • Attach the gauge [1] to the tee-fitting [3].
  • Attach the (2) quick-release fittings [2] to the tee-fitting [3].
  • Insert the 1/4" tubing [4] into one of the quick-release fittings [2].

Disconnect the tube [1] from the output-side of the pre-charge pressure regulator [4].

Put the tube into the top of the pressure-gauge assembly [2].

Connect the 1/4" tube [3] from the pressure-gauge assembly to the regulator.

On some machines, you cannot adjust the regulator. Use the pressure-gauge assembly to make sure the regulator operates correctly. To make sure the regulator [2] operates correctly:

Adjustable regulator:

Push and hold the button on the pre-charge solenoid valve [1] for 20 seconds.

Pull the regulator adjustment knob to unlock it. Set the air pressure to Belt/Gearbox: 4 psi (0.28 bar)Inline: 30 psi (2.1 bar). Release the solenoid button. Push and hold the button on the solenoid valve [1] for 20 seconds.

Make sure the gauge shows Belt/Gearbox: 4 psi (0.28 bar) Inline: 30 psi (2.1 bar). Release the solenoid button. Push the regulator adjustment knob to lock it.

Non-adjustable regulator:

Push and hold the button on the pre-charge solenoid valve [1] for 20 seconds.

Make sure the gauge shows Belt/Gearbox: 4 psi (0.28 bar) Inline: 30 psi (2.1 bar). If the gauge does not shows the correct pressure, the regulator is defective. Replace the regulator.

Both: Remove the pressure-gauge assembly from the regulator.
