Introduction

This document guides technicians on which combination of ballscrew, ballscrew bearing, and spacers work together. Please note that this document is for 32 mm standard anchor ballscrews only.

Please follow the how to use section, as it will clarify many details on how to determine if your ballscrew is an “old” or “new” style ballscrew.

IMPORTANT: Part numbers constantly change and some information in this document can become outdated, this is to be used as reference only. Please refer to the supersession chains associated with each part number for further clarification on which part numbers to order.

For instructions on installing 32MM cartridge bearing retrofit kits see 32MM BALLSCREW BEARING PACK RETROFIT KIT INSTALLATION

For instructions on installing 40mm cartridge bearing retrofit kits see 40MM - Ballscrew Cartridge Bearing - Upgrade

NOTE: The diagram is only meant to help understand the naming conventions, the ballscrews installed may look different.

How-To-Use Ballscrew/Bearing Combination Guide

There are 3 possible combinations for 32 mm ballscrews, they are as follows.

  • OLD BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW
  • NEW BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW
  • NEW BEARING/NEW BALLSCREW

As a general rule, when replacing a ballscrew a “NEW” style ballscrew will arrive, but certain ballscrew part numbers only have the service ballscrew (OLD BALLSCREW) available.

This mean service ballscrews with no NEW BALLSCREW replacements  only have OLD BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW or NEW BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW combinations available.

NOTE: If the ballscrew is being replaced we also recommend to replace the bearing with the cartridge bearing (NEW BEARING).

1

To find which style ballscrew is being installed in the machine, the thrust end length denoted as [1] must be measured.

NOTE: "OLD" style ballscrews refer to ballscrews with longer thrust end lengths [1].  "NEW" style refer to ballscrews with shorter thrust end lengths [1].

  • “OLD” style: 4.265”
  • “NEW” style: 2.835”

2

With the thrust end length measurement, the flow chart can be used to figure out what bearing pack to use. There are two bearing packs that can be used depending on the configuration of the machine:

  • Old Bearing (Bearing Pack): 93-30-0154
  • New Bearing (Cartridge Bearing): 93-2901

There are 3 situations that can occur, only replacing the ballscrew, only replacing the bearing, or replacing both.

32 mm Standard/Reverse Flow Chart

Use the flow charts to determine what bearing pack needs to be ordered if any are needed.

32mm Standard Design Progression

The ballscrews will fall into one of the 3 combinations mentioned below, but throughout the years many changes have occurred with Haas ballscrews that not all ballscrews will have the same components. Use this progression section to navigate which configurations and features the ballscrew is equiped with to better service the machine.

  • OLD BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW
  • NEW BEARING/OLD BALLSCREW
  • NEW BEARING/NEW BALLSCREW

IMPORTANT: Part numbers constantly change and some information in this document can become outdated, this is to be used as reference only. Please refer to the supersession chains associated with each part number for further clarification on which part numbers to order.

1

OLD BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built before 12/2013
Ballscrews built before 12/2013 had a flex coupling (30-1220A) [1] the original bearing pack (30-0154) [2].

This ballscrew also had the support casting assembly (30-0153) [4] which had a press fit bearing that had a gap between the shoulder of the ballscrew and the bearing [3].

NOTE: This was only preloaded to 4 in-lbs

2

OLD BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built from 12/2013-6/2014
Ballscrews built from 12/2013 to 6/2014 had a flex coupling (30-1220A) [1] the first iteration of the cartridge bearing (51-0213/A) [2] which included a spacer [3] to compensate for the smaller bearing size.

This ballscrew support casting assembly was changed to 30-12054 [5] which had a slip fit bearing that no longer had a gap, but used a wave spring [4] to properly preload the bearing.

NOTE: This was only preloaded to 10 in-lbs.

3

OLD BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built from 3/2016 to present
Ballscrews built from 3/2016 to presently had the flex coupling changed to the solid couplings (30-1220A) [1].

This assembly also included first iteration of the cartridge bearing (51-0213/A) [2] which included a spacer to compensate for the gap between bearings and ballscrew [3].

4

OLD BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built from 10/2016 to present
Ballscrews built from 3/2016 to present had a bearing filler (28-0371) [3] added to the assembly to prevent bumpers from crashing into the bearing.

During this time the ballscrews were cartridge bearings were changed after 1/2019-7/2020 to a new part number (51-0268) [1].

This still includes a spacer to compensate for the gap between bearings and ballscrew [2].

5

OLD BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built after 3/2019 to present
Ballscrews built after 3/2019 had a new version of the cartridge bearing (51-0268A) [1] which did not include the spacer as an item in the part number as it did in the previous version (51-0268). This was to prepare for the updated version of the ballscrew which we will detail in the next step.

A part number for the spacer was created (51-0240) [3] so that the cartridge bearing would work with this style ballscrew.

This assembly also had the bearing filler  (28-0371) [3] present

6

NEW BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built after 5/2020 to present
Ballscrews built after 5/2020 had standardized keys [1], these keys are backwards compatible with keys of ballscrew assemblies built prior.

In the same year Haas changed the ballscrew to the “new” style ballscrew. Ballscrews built after 9/2020 have a longer journal to fill the empty space left by changing to the cartridge bearing [2].

This meant that the assembly would no longer need the ballscrew spacer, but still has the bearing filler  (28-0371) [3].

This would be the first iteration of the NEW BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING combination.

7

NEW BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built after 2/2021 to present
Ballscrews built after 2/2021 were built with updated motor and support end castings.

These updates not only changed appearance, but added material to the bottom of the ballscrew motor end (30-12659A) [1] and support end casting (30-12660) [6] with a wave spring [5] still part of the assembly.

NOTE: The measurement of 2.630 in. will be further explained in the next step

Additionally, this also removed material from the mounting pads of the machine castings the support and motor housings are installed on. This change was to address issues found in production.

IMPORTANT: If the machine needs a replacement motor and support end castings these style castings CANNOT be ordered for previous assemblies as they are NOT backwards compatible with machines built prior to this date.

This assembly has the new style ballscrew, standardized key [2], newest style cartridge bearing [3], and bearing filler [4].

8

NEW BALLSCREW / NEW BEARING: Ballscrews built after 7/2020 to 2/2021
In the previous step the newest version of the ballscrew assembly with the updated motor and support end castings were displayed and it was stated that it was not backwards compatible. They are not, but ballscrews built after 7/2020 until 2/2021 may have the updated support end casting style , but the material added to the bottom of the casting is not present (30-12054A) [5].

The image shown shows that the distance from the centerline to the bottom of the casting is 2.500” whereas the previous step shows that same distance as 2.630”. This casting style with the centerline distance as 2.500” is backwards compatible with all the previous version castings mentioned.

This assembly has the new style ballscrew, standardized key [1], newest style cartridge bearing [2], and bearing filler [3].
