Ball end mills, also known as “ball nose” end mills or full-radius end mills, have a constant single radius – or ball – at the end of the cutting tool. The nose radius is equal to half the diameter of the tool, and the edges are center cutting. The cutting profile has no sharp corners or straight edges.
Ball end mills are used for a variety of milling operations, such as contouring, profiling, slotting, and pocketing. Due to their shape, they are particularly suited to machining 3D part contours, milling large corner radii, and grooving with a full radius. Ball end mills are commonly used for finishing and semi-finishing operations in moldmaking, tool & die, and other applications with complex contours and profiles.
