EC - 400 - Inline Drive - Spider Coupling - Spindle Motor and Spindle - Replacement

AD0727

Applies to machines built from: January, 1989

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to replace and align an inline drive spider coupling spindle motor and an inline drive spider coupling spindle.

Note: This procedure is on an EC-400 that has an inline drive with a spider coupling spindle. Refer to EC-400/500 - Inline Drive - Spindle Motor - Replacement for spindles without a spider coupling.

This procedure applies to the following service kits:

Inline Drive Spider Coupling Spindle Motors:

93-30-8037B: SPINDLE MTR 12/15K INLINE YASKAWA

93-30-30328: SPINDLE MTR ASSY 8K FOR TSC

93-30-9179A: SPINDLE MOTOR 8K INLINE NO TSC

Inline Drive Spider Coupling Spindles:

93-30-6459E: SPINDLE 40T INLINE 8K 2ND GEN HMC

93-30-6460: SPINDLE, 12K 40T W/DB INLINE 2ND GEN EC

Tools Required:

  • 150 lb (68 kg) capacity lift
  • Lifting straps
  • HMC SPINDLE MOTOR ALIGNMENT TOOL (P/N: T-2435)

Note: The T-2435 alignment tool requires these additional parts: (5) P/N 40-1645, (1) McMaster P/N 6459K15, (4) McMaster P/N 5679K13.

Spindle Motor Replacement

1

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

2

Remove the motor shroud and fan assemblies.

Disconnect the encoder and power cables.

Put labels on the motor wires to identify their connections. Record the wiring configuration for the spindle motor. Disconnect the wires.

Attach (2) lift straps to the motor assembly.

Caution: The motor assembly weighs 150 lb (68 kg). Make sure to use a lift of the correct capacity.

Remove the (4) screws that hold the motor assembly to the tool release piston (TRP).

Remove the motor from the machine.

3

Disconnect the spindle lubrication tube and 90-degree fitting [1].

The fitting is at the bottom of the spindle. Remove it by reaching under the spindle casting.

Install a 1/8" NPT plug into the lubrication port. Install the plug flush or below flush with the surface of the spindle.

Remove the spindle [2].

Record the location of all spindle shims.

4

Clean and lightly stone the mating surfaces [2] on the TRP assembly.

Attach the new motor assembly to the TRP assembly.

Snug the (4) bolts [1] to hold the motor.

Spindle Motor Alignment

1

Put the alignment shaft tool onto the coupler of the new motor. Put an indicator onto the shaft.

Put the stylus of the indicator against the inside of the bore [1] on the spindle casting. Set the indicator to 0.

Use your hand to turn the motor. Sweep the inside of the bore.

Move the spindle motor to get the alignment less than 0.015" TIR. Alignment pins may need to be removed to acheive the correct alignment. Some models have a one piece TRP and others have a two piece TRP with standoffs. You may need to move the TRP [2], or the spacers to get the motor alignment correct. A bottle jack can be used inside the column to precisely move the parts.

2

Put the tip of the indicator stylus against the face [1] of the spindle casting.

Use your hand to turn the motor. Sweep the face of the spindle casting.

Add or remove shims [2] until the total indicated runout (TIR) is not more than 0.010".

Torque the (4) screws [3] that hold the motor. Refer to Haas Fastener Torque Specification. Use the value for aluminum.

Reconnect the motor wires. Refer to the labels to make the correct connections.

Connect the power and encoder cables.

Spindle Installation

1

Stone the mating surfaces on the spindle casting and on the spindle housing.

Apply a light coat of grease to the bore of the spindle casting.

Put the spider coupler [1] into the coupler.

Put a small amount of putty [2] on the tips of the coupler.

Insert the spindle [3] into the spindle casting. Make sure the spindle is firmly seated against the motor coupler.

Remove the spindle.

Use calipers [4] to measure the thickness of the putty. If the motor is at the correct distance from the spindle casting, the thickness of the putty is between 0.088” and 0.148” (2.2 mm and 3.8 mm) thick.

Add or remove shims between the spindle casting and the tool release piston until the motor is the correct distance from the spindle casting.

Do the "EC-400 - Inline Drive - Motor Alignment" section again.

Make sure no putty remains on the spindle coupler.

2

Apply a thin coating of lithium grease to these parts:

  • spider coupler [1]
  • top and bottom o-rings [2]
  • transfer tube [3]

Insert the transfer tube and the spider coupler into the spindle.

Insert the spindle [4] into the spindle casting.

Turn the spindle until the lubrication port location points down.

Install the (6) screws to hold the spindle. Make sure the screws are tight enough to control the adjustment.

Remove the 1/8" plug from the spindle lubrication port.

Connect the 90-degree lubrication fitting. Connect the oil hose.

3

Put a test bar into the spindle.

Put an indicator onto the table.

Put the tip of the stylus against the side of the spindle test bar. Jog the Z Axis and check the alignment.

If the spindle is correctly aligned, the total indicated reading is not more than 0.0005".

Add shims between the spindle casting and the spindle housing until the spindle is correctly aligned.

Torque the (6) screws that hold the spindle. Refer to Haas Fastener Torque Specifications. Use the value for iron.

Do this step again to make sure the alignment did not change.
