SPINDLES

CHIP & COOLANT MANAGEMENT

THE HAAS CONTROL

Ease of use and simplicity are the founding principles of the Haas Control. Designed and built exclusively by Haas since its inception in 1988, the Haas Control is the standard by which all other controls are measured. Commonality between vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and turning centers ensures that operators can easily move from one Haas machine to another. Continued advancement of the Haas Control – with powerful features like power-failure detection, Ethernet connectivity, Dynamic Work Offsets, and HaasConnect remote machine monitoring – allows customers to maximize their investment in a Haas machine.

The story of the VF

HOW IT STARTED . . .

A SIMPLE VISION

When Gene Haas set out to build his first vertical machining center, he did it the only way he knew how – the right way. 

Gene Haas founded Haas Automation, Inc., in 1983 to manufacture the industry’s first fully automatic programmable collet indexer – a device used to position parts for machining with very high accuracy. 

In 1988, Haas Automation achieved another industry milestone, by introducing the first American-built vertical machining center (VMC) to sell for less than $50,000 – a price unheard of at the time. The Haas VF-1 sold for a published price of $49,900, and quickly became the industry benchmark for affordable CNC technology.

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR CNC

The first VF-1 prototypes were introduced in 1988 at the International Machine Tool Show (IMTS 88) in Chicago, Illinois. The “V” in the model name stands for vertical – an industry-standard designation for a vertical mill – and company founder Gene Haas added “F1” to unofficially designate it as the company’s “Very First One.” That first machine was the foundation of Haas Automation’s industry-leading VF Series vertical machining centers. Prices for all machines and options are published online for all to see – something no other machine tool builder can claim.

VF-2SS AT WORK

Watch as we rip through some aluminum and efficiently machine all 6 sides of a part, with a VF-2SS and HRC-210 rotary table. The SS spindle has the speed to really push a small endmill through aluminum at extremely high feedrates, and the power to remove lots of material with a shell mill.

HOW WE BUILD THE VF-1 TODAY

Back in the late eighties, we started building our first VMC, the VF-1. We didn't build them as efficiently as we do today, but they were good machines and laid the foundation for decades of milling machine development and improvement to come.
