Live Tooling Installation

This document applies to the following kits:

Machines built before 6/1/2021:

93-1000225 - LIVE TOOLING WITH C AXIS CL-1
93-1000631 - LIVE TOOLING WITHOUT C AXIS CL-1

Machines built 6/1/2021 and later:

93-1000859 LIVE TOOL WITH C-AXIS SIG7 04 CL-1
93-1000860 LIVE TOOL WITHOUT C-AXIS SIG7 04 CL-1

Tools required:

5C 1/4" collet
ER11 1/4" collet
2 X .250" x 4" Pin Gages
Feeler Gage Shimstock (.005", .001", .0005")
Height gage with Dial Indicator
Indicator/Magbase

Install the motor cable gasket[1] and motor cable hosing[2] with copper crush washers[3] and screws[4] to the Live Tooling (LT) assembly.

Lube the cable connectors with silicone grease and connect the motor cables. Loop the motor cable to take up slack and ensure there are no sharp bends or in the cables.

Clean the LT housing face and install gasket[5] and motor cover[6] with screws[7]. Tighten down the motor cover so that gasket is compressed evenly along its perimeter.

Install the Live Tooling (LT) assembly[8] to the table, lining up the dowel pins and torque the four screws[9] according to Haas Torque chart.

Live Tooling Alignment

Remove the collet nuts from the Live Tooling (LT) tool holders and measure the run-out of the tool holder tapers. (NTE 0 .0015")

Install the pin gages into 5C collet in the spindle and ER11 collet in the long LT tool holder.

Jog the table so the pins are close to each other as show.

Place height gauge on the table and indicator on top of LT pin gage[1] and measure runout. Find the middle of the runout range and leave the pin in that orientation

Place indicator on top of the spindle pin gage[2] and measure the runout. Find the middle of the runout range and leave the pin in that orientation.

Place the magbase on spindle head and indicate the top of the LT pin gage and jog the X-axis. (NTE 0.0005"/1")

Shim either side of the LT so the LT tool tool is parallel to the plane of the table.

Torque bolts according to Haas Torque chart and verify LT flatness.

With the height gauge on table indicate, the top of the LT pin gage[1]. Set zero at the current height of the LT.

Slide height gauge over to spindle pin gauge[2] and check the indicator reading.

Note: If you do not have a height gauge use a indicator with mag base and jog table from LT pin gage[1] to spindle pin gage[2] to measure the height difference.

Shim that amount under the Live Tooling in the 4 locations shown.

Center line heights should (NTE 0.0005").

Torque bolts according to Haas Torque chart and verify LT height.

With magbase mounted to the spindle head, indicate the side of the LT pin gage and jog the X-axis. (NTE 0.0005"/1")

If adjustment is needed loosen the LT screws and adjust to within specification.

Torque bolts according to Haas Torque chart and verify LT flatness, squareness, and height.

Live Tooling Cable Routing

Add protective wrap to the LT cable[1] up to the cable clamp and route it along the turret cable[2] through the cable channel and into the Control Panel.

Amplifier Installation

Electrical Safety

Caution: When maintenance or repair is performed on CNC machines and their components, you must always follow basic safety percautions. This decreases the risk of injury and mechanical damage.

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the [OFF] position.

Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Danger: Before beginning any work inside the control cabinet the High Voltage indicator light on the 320V Power Supply / Vector Drive must be off for at least 5 minutes. If the voltage indicator light is on, do not touch the electrical components. The high voltage in the electrical cabinet can kill you. Some service procedures can be dangerous or life threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not fully understand. If you have any doubts about performing a procedure contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service visit.

Disconnect the jumper cables between the X-Axis and Z-Axis servo amplifiers.

Install the Live Tooling servo amplifier[1] to its labled spot in the control cabinet.

Install the ground wire[2] and cable clamp.

Connect the servo cables [3]. The cables are color-coded.

Connect the high-voltage jumpers[4] to the terminals on the Live Tooling servo amplifier and to the adjacent servo amplifiers.

Connect the current command cable to the connector near the top of the servo amplifier [1].

Connect the other end of the current command cable to the AMPLIFIER COMMAND output 11 on the NGC PCB [2].

Connect Live Tooling encoder cable to the ENCODER input 11 on the NGC PCB [3].

Live Tooling Activation

Turn on the machine.

Login to the HAAS SERVICE PORTAL.

Download the Live Tooling option configuration patch files.

Note: The option files will appear on the configuration download page after the Live Tooling Kit has been ordered. If the option does not appear contact the service department.

Load the option configuration patch file to the control. Refer to the NEXT GENERATION CONTROL - CONFIGURATION FILE - DOWNLOAD/LOAD procedure.
