EC-400 Chip Management

The completely redesigned EC-400 has been improved from the ground up, with all new castings for increased rigidity and better cutting performance, 5 more inches of Y-axis travel, an available 100-pocket tool changer, and vastly improved chip evacuation.

At the heart of the EC-400’s improved chip management system is a wider belt-type chip conveyor positioned in the center of the machine, directly under the spindle. The steep walls of the interior enclosure easily funnel chips to the conveyor. 

The conveyor discharges chips at the height of a full-size industrial barrel. Washdown nozzles mounted in the ceiling are fed by a separate coolant pump, and allow you to direct coolant flow to areas where chips may gather, to further enhance chip evacuation. 

EC-400 Coolant Ring


The 4-nozzle coolant ring surrounding the spindle nose is perfectly positioned so that nozzles can be pointed at the shortest tools, and others can be positioned for longer tools. The compact, cylindrical design prevents chips from collecting on top. NOTE: The Haas Programmable Coolant Nozzle (P-COOL) is not available on the EC-400.

EC-400 Pallet Schedule Table


In previous Haas pallet-changing machines, the G188 code was used to call a part program from the Pallet Schedule Table (PST), based on which pallet was loaded. Continuous operation was achieved by running a main program that consisted of an M50 to perform a pallet change, the G188 to call the program for the loaded pallet, and an M99 to loop the whole process. The M50 loaded the next scheduled pallet, and the G188 called the program designated for that pallet.

With the G188, however, if you restarted your machining process in the middle of one of the pallet programs, it didn’t allow you to get back to the main program to continue uninterrupted machining. You had to wait for your restarted program to finish, select your main program again, and then start your continuous cycle.

We developed a new M-code to solve this problem. The M199 is used at the end of a program. When the program is started by pressing [CYCLE START] in Memory mode, the M199 acts exactly like an M30 (Program End and Reset). But if the program is started by pressing [INSERT] while the Pallet Schedule Table is displayed, the M199 will command a pallet change to load the next scheduled pallet, and then run the program associated with that pallet. This allows the user to start machining on any pallet, and continue uninterrupted machining, as long as pallets are scheduled.

EC-400 Cycloidal Rotary Drive


The cycloidal rotary drive system – designed for machine tools and robotics – provides a great combination of speed, accuracy, and durability to the B axis. The rugged design provides long service life, with little or no maintenance, and is especially durable in a crash.

EC-400 Hydraulic Pallet-Clamping System

The hydraulic power unit provides power to clamp the pallets to the pallet receiver, as well as raise and lower the pallet-changer mechanism.

EC-400 Increased Axis Travels


An extra 5" (127 mm) of Y-axis travel can make all the difference in the world. Now, the spindle centerline can get 27.13" (689 mm) above the surface of the pallet. We also increased the X- and Z-axis travels by 2" (51 mm) each.

EC-400 Stepped Base and Column


The stepped base and column design of the EC-400, where one X-axis linear guide rail is on a different horizontal plane than the other, increases the rigidity and stability of the spindle-head column assembly. With hydraulic pallet clamping and the stepped base/column design, the EC-400 is more rigid than ever, all the way to the top! 

EC-400 Automatic Probe Riser


An automatic probe arm stores the tool setting probe in a protective compartment during machining operations. When the tool probe is needed, an M104 code activates the automatic probe arm to lift the probe and lock it into place. When probing is complete, an M105 retracts the probe to its protective compartment.
