Vibration Analysis - Ethernet Interface

AD0166

Revision D - 03/2026

Introduction

Updated

This procedure applies to the vibration analyzer with the Ethernet interface. This vibration analyzer uses an Ethernet connection to send the measured data to the computer.

If you have the vibration analyzer with the RS-232 interface, do the Vibration Analysis - RS-232 Interface procedure.

  1. Computer (not included in the kit)
  2. Vibration sensor with a magnetic base
  3. Power Adapter
  4. IFM USB memory device with software
Note: The Software can be downloaded from the HBC site.  Service > Documents and Software > 10_Service Tools.
  5. Ethernet cable
  6. Ethernet interface. (This stays in the case. DO NOT remove)
  7. Protective case (The top is not shown)

You will need 93-2262 / 93-2262A, IFM Vibration Analyzer, to complete the procedure.

Software Installation and Setup

Updated

This procedure shows you how to do these tasks:

  1. Install the software for the vibration analyzer.
  2. Set the configuration of the software.

This procedure shows the Windows 7 operating system. The procedure is similar for other operating systems.

1

Connect the ethernet cable [5] to the computer [1].

Connect the other end of the ethernet cable [5] to the ethernet interface [6].

Connect the power adapter [3] to a power source.

2

Select Start and select Control Panel.

Select View network status and tasks [1].

Select Local Area Connection [2].

Select Properties.

3

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)  [1].

Select Properties [2].

Select Use the following IP address [3]:

Type 192.168.0.2 in the IP address field [4].

The Subnet mask field fills automatically [5].

If the field does not fill automatically, type 255.255.255.0 [5].

Click OK [6].

Close the Connection Properties and Connection Status screens.

4

Locate the IFM USB memory device.

The USB memory device is in the protective case.

Put the USB memory device in the computer USB port.

Open the drive for the USB memory device.

Copy [2] the folder named: VES003_3.0.3.2_Haas Version [1] to the computer hard-drive.

Double-click the octavis_VES003.exe [3].

This starts the vibration analysis software.

5

Click VSE.

Go to New.

Select VSE [1].

Select static IP-Address [2]. Click Next.

The IP-Address and Port fields [3] are filled with the factory settings. Click Next.

The default name is the IP-Address [4]. Click Next.

Make sure connect immediately [5] is selected. Click Finished [6].

6

The new connection [1] is shown in the Overview.

Double-click on Monitoring [2].

Click on Spectrum monitoring [3].

7

Select Extras. Select Preferences.

Select the correct units:

  • Acceleration - mg [1]
  • Lengths - Inch (25.4 mm) [2]
  • Frequencies - CPM [3]

How to Use the Ethernet Interface

1

Warm up the Spindle:

Insert a tool into the spindle.

For spindles that are 10,000 RPM or higher, ensure the tooling is balanced to at least balance grade G2.5

If necessary, select the [MEMORY] tab and operate the warm up program for the spindle:

Classic Haas Control O02020.

Next Generation Control O09220.

2

Place the accelerometer on the spindle:

Remove the protective magnet from the vibration sensor.

Put the vibration sensor (accelerometer) on the right side of the spindle in the X Axis direction.

Place the parallel magnets that are on the sensor parallel with the spindle.

For lathe spindle, you can either place the accelerometer on the side of the spindle casting or you can place it on one of the motor mounts near the hydraulic actuator.

Note: We measure vibration in the X Axis because the machine is weakest in this axis and thus will produce the highest vibration in this direction.

3

Vibration Displacement Settings:

  • Right click on the spectrum screen
  • Select FFT [5].
  • Select mil [2].
  • Select 45.776 CP [3].
  • Select 0-38,452 CPM [4].
  • Select 0.1 mil [6] for the Y-Axis Scaling.

4

Select a speed to analyze the spindle vibration:

You can view vibration measurements at any speed, it doesn't just have to be max speed.

  • If the customer is having vibration issues at the speed they use in their program, it's probably best to check the vibration plots at that speed.
  • If you're not sure if there's a specific speed where vibration is happening with your machine, with the vibration analyzer connected, run the machine starting at 1000 RPM and go up in 1000 RPM increments seeing if you find an area where there is a high vibration displacement spike or lots of noise/spikes on the vibration velocity plot.
  • To determine what a "high" spike may be, please compare to the Vibration Tolerances for Mill or Lathe
    • Mill Spindle Vibration Tolerances
    • Lathe Spindle Vibration Tolerances

For troubleshooting purposes, it is best to get a baseline of spindle health at max speed so the factory can compare it to the expected health of the spindle.

If you are not sure the max speed of the machine, you can check Parameter 131 for your maximum spindle speed.

Run the spindle at any given speed using the below example code:

For example, for a 12K spindle enter this program in MDI mode:

M03 S12000;

Press [CYCLE START].

5

How to take Vibration Displacement plots:

When taking measurements you can select the range of Cycles Per Minute (CPM) that you can see on the graph.

When viewing the Displacement Plot you want the range to include the spindle speed in which you are running the spindle, since that is where you will see the spike of vibration at.

For most Displacement measurements this will be in the range of 0-38,452 CPM.

However if you're testing a Compact Mill or Office Mill, you may need to switch to 38,452 - 76,904 CPM since the max speed of some of those spindles can be as high as 50,000 RPM depending on the spindle option.

Select the CPM range you need.

Run the spindle at the desired speed.

Let the vibration spike settle once the spindle reaches the speed you commanded (about 5-10 seconds).

Capture a screenshot.

6

Velocity Plot Settings:

  • Right click on the spectrum screen
  • Select FFT [5].
  • Select in/s [2].
  • Select 0.01 inch/s [6] for the Y-Axis Scaling.
  • Select 45.776 CP [3].
  • Select 0-38,452 CPM [4].
  • Select Peak for the Y-Axis Amplitude.

Take screenshots of the plots at the following CPM ranges:

  • 0-38,452 CPM
  • 38,452 - 76,904 CPM
  • 76,904 - 115,356 CPM
  • 115,356 - 153,809 CPM
  • 153,809 - 192,261 CPM
  • 192,261 - 230,713 CPM

Analyze the data. Refer to Mill - Spindle Vibration - Tolerances or Lathe - Spindle Vibration - Tolerances for the vibration specifications.

7

If the vibration is higher than the specifications, you can do this procedure again with the spindle disconnected from the motor.

Note: For inline spindles, you must remove the spindle.

Attach the sensor to the side of the head casting for the spindle.

Attach it to the position that is nearest to the spindle motor.

Note: Make sure the position is a flat area.

Compare the results with the first test.

If the noise stays higher than the specifications, the noise is from the motor.

If the noise appears to be from the spindle, please refer to:
