Lathe - Toolholder to Spindle Center Line - NGC

This procedure requires parameter changes and should only be completed by a Haas HFO Technician.

Lathe - Toolholder to Spindle Center Line - NGC

- Jump to Section - 1. Find Center Line 2. Standard Lathe - No Y-Axis (1 step) 3. Y-Axis Lathe (2 steps) Back to Top

Find Center Line

Locate spindle centerline using a co-axial indicator:

Note: It is highly recommended to use the co-axial indicator clamped in the chuck to take the measurements rather than the traditional magnetic base with the test indicator. The magnetic base setup tends to droop as the spindle rotates and will affect the measurements. An incorrectly set tool holder centerline may cause tool breakage and incorrect part geometry.

  • Install the appropriate boring bar tool holder [1] onto station 1 on the turret.

Note: Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and free of defects. Any debris between the turret and the tool holder will affect the measurements.

  • Clamp the coaxial indicator [2] in the chuck and sweep the inner diameter (ID) of the tool holder bore.
  • Jog the X axis in small increments until there is no variation in measurements between the quadrants [3] and [4].
    • Not to Exceed (NTE) 0.001"
    • Achieve as close to zero runout as possible
  • If you have a Y-axis machine you can use the Y-axis to find center.

Standard Lathe - No Y-Axis

1

Once you have the turret on spindle center line:

  • Go to Settings by pushing [SETTING]
  • Use the arrow key to navigate to User Positions then to Spindle Center Line.
  • Highlight the appropriate setting for the type of turret on your machine [1]
    • VDI turret: Setting 319
    • BOT/BMT turret: Setting 320

Note: If you have a hybrid turret use Setting 319 VDI Spindle Center Line X. You should have centered the spindle to Tool 1 which is a VDI tool.

  • With the turret still on spindle center line:
  • Press [F2] to set the value to the current axis position.
  • Move your indicator away from the tool holder.
  • Press [ZERO RETURN] to Zero Return your machine
  • Hand Jog to the X value that was recorded in Setting 319/320 and verify that the indicator shows zero runout to check that the turret returned to spindle centerline

Y-Axis Lathe

1

With the turret set on spindle center line by using the co-axial indicator:

  • Go into Debug mode by using your Haas Control Key.
  • Go to Diagnostics by pushing [DIAGNOSTIC].
  • Use the arrow keys to navigate to Parameters then down to Factory.
  • Press [211] then [F1] to search for Parameter 211 [1].
    • Note: Parameter 211 must start at zero before you set it.
  • Press [Y] and [F2] to Set Tool Changer Offset
  • Move the indicator away from the tool holder and press [ZERO RETURN] then [Y] then [SINGLE].
  • Wait for the turret to stop moving then return the indicator to the center of the tool holder and recheck the spindle centerline.

2

  • Go to Settings by pushing [SETTING]
  • Use arrow key to navigate to User Positions then to Spindle Center Line.
  • Highlight Setting 321 Spindle Center Line Y and press [F2] then [ENTER].
  • The value should change from inactive to all zeroes.
  • Highlight the appropriate setting for the type of turret on your machine.
    • VDI turret: Setting 319
    • BOT/BMT turret: Setting 320

Note: If you have a hybrid turret use Setting 319 VDI Spindle Center Line X. You should have centered the spindle to Tool 1 which is a VDI tool.

  • Press [F2] to set the value to the current axis position.
  • Move your indicator away from the tool holder.
  • Zero Return your machine
  • Hand Jog to the X value to what was recorded in Setting 319/320 and check to see if you spindle is centered.
