ST Lathe Alignment Indicating Zone - Video

The following service video shows how to properly measure the geometry to fill the Lathe Alignment report.

  NOTE:  This  service video is for reference only and does not replace the written procedure. 

Spindle Housing

Mount the indicator to the turret and the spindle bar to the spindle and align the tool by checking the runout at the base and end of the tool (NTE 0.0001").

Indicate the top and side of the spindle bar and jog the Z-axis (NTE 0.0004"/10").

  • T-2113 Spindle Alignment Bar - A2-5 for ST-10/ST-10Y
  • T-1312 Spindle Alignment Bar - A2-6 for ST-20/ST-20Y/ST-25/ST-25Y/ST-30/ST-30Y

  • T-2160 Spindle Alignment Bar Adapter A2-11. Used with T-2161 Spacer and T-1652 Alignment Bar for ST-40/ST-40L/ST-45/ST-45L

Turret Face Parallel To X-Axis

Mount indicator base to spindle retaining ring and indicate the turret face of pocket 1. Jog the X-axis.

BOT (NTE 0.0015"/4")

Mount indicator base to spindle retaining ring and indicate the turret face of pocket 1. Jog the X-axis.

VDI (NTE 0.0004"/4")

HYBRID (NTE 0.001"/4")

BMT Pocket Parallel To Z-Axis

Mount indicator base to spindle retaining ring and indicate the lower face of the BMT T-slot of pocket 1. Jog the Z-axis. (NTE 0.001")

Wedge Squared To Base

Attach an indicator to the face of the turret and indicate the face of the spindle.  Rotate the spindle 360° (NTE 0.0002") (ST-50/55 NTE 0.001")

Place a gauge block on the spindle face and align it the tool to the X-axis. Jog the X-axis and sweep the face of the block on either side of the spindle. (NTE 0.0002"/5") (ST-50/55 NTE 0.0005"/10")

For machines with a Y-axis. Record Parameter 700 value and change it to zero. Place a gauge block on the spindle face and align it the tool to the Y-axis. Jog the Y-axis and sweep the face of the block on either side of the spindle. (NTE 0.0002"/5") (ST-50/55 NTE 0.0005"/10")

Note: Set Parameter 700 back to its original value.

Tailstock Parallelism To Z-Axis

Install the taper alignment tool onto the Tailstock.

Note: Taper Alignment Tools

  • T-0016 for MT3 (ST-10/15)
  • T-1416 for MT4 (ST-20/25/30/35 and DS-30Y)
  • T-1733 for MT5 (ST-40/40L/45/50/55)
  • T-1733 and MT5 ID to MT6 OD Adapter for MT6 (ST-40/40L/45/50/55)

Note: MT5 ID to MT6 OD Adapter not available from Haas. Needs to be purchased off-the-shelf.

Mount the indicator to the turret and indicate the top and side of the taper alignment tool (NTE 0.001"/4")

Z-Axis To B-Axis Parallelism Tailstock

Mount the indicator to the turret and zero return the B-axis. Indicate the top of the taper alignment tool.

  • Start at the base of the alignment tool and jog the Z-axis the length of the tool. Record the reading.
  • Jog the B-axis the length of the tool and repeat for the full length of the B-axis travel (NTE 0.001"/Full B-axis Travel).

Repeat the procedure for the side of the alignment tool (NTE 0.001"/Full B-axis Travel)

Tailstock Concentricity To Spindle

Install an indicator to the spindle alignment bar and check the runout at the base and end of the taper alignment bar (NTE 0.001")

Tool Holders To Spindle Centerline

BOT Spindle Centerline to Turret

 

Install an indicator to the spindle alignment bar and mount a BOT inspection tool holder on pocket 1. Jog the turret to the X position stored in setting 320. Sweep the tool pocket (NTE 0.001"/Pocket 1). Check all other pockets on turret (NTE 0.003"/All Other Pockets).

Note: BOT Inspection Tool Holders

  • T-0026 for ST-10/15
  • T-0027 for ST-20/25/30/35 and DS-30Y
  • T-0028 for ST-40/40L/45/45L/50/55

VDI Spindle Centerline to Turret

 

Install an indicator to the spindle alignment bar and mount a VDI inspection tool holder on pocket 1. Jog the turret to the X position stored in setting 319. Sweep the tool pocket (NTE 0.001"/Pocket 1). Check all other pockets on turret (NTE 0.003"/All Other Pockets).

Hybrid Spindle Centerline to Turret

 

Install an indicator to the spindle alignment bar and mount a VDI inspection tool holder on pocket 1. Jog the turret to the X position stored in setting 319. Sweep the tool pocket (NTE 0.001"/Pocket 1). Check all other pockets on turret (NTE 0.003"/All Other Pockets).

Note: VDI Pockets are odd numbered pockets. BOT pockets are even numbered pockets.

BMT Spindle Centerline to Turret

 

Install an indicator to the spindle alignment bar and mount a BMT inspection tool holder on pocket 1. Jog the turret to the X position stored in setting 320. Sweep the tool pocket (NTE 0.001"/Pocket 1). Check all other pockets on turret (NTE 0.003"/All Other Pockets).

BOT Flats Parallel To Z-Axis

Mount indicator base to spindle retaining ring and indicate the face of the BOT pocket on BOT and Hybrid Turrets. Jog the Z-axis.

BOT POCKET 1 (NTE 0.0004") - ALL OTHER POCKETS (NTE 0.001")

HYBRID ALL BOT FLATS (NTE 0.001")

Dual Spindle

Mount the indicator to the turret and the spindle bar to the dual spindle and align the tool by checking the runout at the base and end of the tool (NTE 0.0002").

Indicate the spindle nose and measure the Total Indicated Runout (NTE 0.002").

Mount the indicator to the turret and the spindle bar to the spindle and align the tool by checking the runout at the base and end of the tool (NTE 0.0002").

Indicate the top and side of the spindle bar and jog the Z-axis (NTE 0.0004"/10").

Z-Axis To B-Axis Parallelism Dual Spindle

Mount the indicator to the turret and zero return the B-axis. Indicate the top of the dual spindle alignment bar.

  • Start at the base of the alignment tool and jog the Z-axis the length of the tool. Record the reading.
  • Jog the B-axis the length of the tool and repeat for the full length of the B-axis travel (NTE 0.001"/Full B-axis Travel).

Repeat the procedure for the side of the alignment tool (NTE 0.001"/Full B-axis Travel)
