DC/DT/DM/CM/MM/SMM/UMC-350 - Auto Window - Installation

AD0652

Introduction

This procedure will show you how to install the Auto Window on the DC-1/2,  DM-1/2, DT-1/2, CM-1, Minimill, and UMC-350.

Machine Requirements:

  • UMC-350 Manufactured after 7/15/2022
  • DT/DM Manufactured after 11/17/2017
  • CM-1 Machines Manufactured after 11/01/2023
  • MM/SMM/MM-EDU Reboot Style Machines
  • DC-1/DC-2 Machines

Important: The Auto Window option is NOT COMPATIBLE with machines with the TAB option built before June 2019.

NOTE: For DT/DM machines, check the right side enclosure panel for cutouts above the window needed for the install. If enclosure panel has no cutouts, order 25-16096 ENCL PANL RT SIDE WINDOW DT/DM and replace the panel.

Minimum Software:

  • 100.22.000.1000 or higher

IMPORTANT: In order to use the M180 and M181 M-codes to command the auto window, the machine must meet the following conditions:

  • No automation option enabled on the Haas control (parts loader, robot, or pallet pool)
  • Safety Fence, Area Scanner, or Light Curtain is connected on the machine.
  • Side automation safety parameters need to be applied to the machine configuration. (93-1000996 - Side automation safety parameters kit is needed if adding the option to an existing machine.)

Note: If any type of automation option offered by Haas is enabled on the machine, the M-codes cannot be used to operate the auto window.

Note: This procedure covers the installation of two different types of auto window kits. One type uses dual proximity sensors and the other type uses dual magnetic clamp sensors. Refer to the table below to see what type of auto window kit is compatible with each machine.

Important: Auto Window is only compatible when machine's mist condenser or enclosure exhaust is rotated 90 degrees. Refer to the MIST CONDENSER - INSTALLATION or ENCLOSURE EXHAUST - INSTALLATION.

*The 93-1001028 requires more assembly than the other auto window kits. These assembly steps are labeled "For DC-Series machines" in the instructions below.

Enclosure Setup

1

For DC-Series Machines:

Slide the two window guides [1] onto the side window enclosure panel [2].

To secure the window guides in place, bend the tabs [3] extending from the top of the enclosure panel over the window guides to lock them in position.

Slide the window [4] from the top into the guides [1] and test that the window slides through the guides easily and can be aligned with the window lift bracket [5].

Important: Do not fix the lift bracket [5] to the window at this time. That will be done later in the procedure.

2

For DC-Series Machines:

Take the AutoWindow Mounting panels [1] and fasten them to the DC-1 enclosure [3] as shown in the left image.

Fasten the Window panel [4] to the mounting panels [1] using the 6 FBHCS [5] fasteners included in the kit.

Note: The right image shows the window panel mounting from the viewpoint of inside the machine. Make sure the mounting panels [1] are facing the proper direction.

3

For DC-Series Machines:

The lift cylinder assembly for the DC-1 auto window is the same as auto windows on other machines.

Refer to the sections below for how to install the air cylinder and align the cylinder to the lift bracket.

4

For Minimill Series Machines:

Remove the top [1] and right side [2] enclosure panels from the machine. Keep the fasteners, these can be reused to install the new top and right side enclosure panels that came with the auto window kit.

Install the auto window compatible enclosure panels. There is a panel for the top and a panel for the right side of the enclosure.

Remove the pendant cable cover [3] if more access is needed to install these panels.

Solenoid Installation

1

Push [POWER OFF].

Set main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Close the primary air valve. This stops the air supply to the machine.

Open the bleed valve on the air manifold until air pressure is released. Make sure the air pressure is 0 psi (0 bar).

2

Inside the CALM cabinet, remove and discard the manifold plug. Clean the port threads on the manifold.

Install the solenoid assembly [1] into the manifold port. Connect corresponding yellow and gray hosing to the solenoid's fitting.

Note: Refer to the Air-Lubrication System decal inside the lubrication cabinet for correct solenoid placement.

Extension cable 33-1144 [2] connects to P38 on the IOPCB and to the solenoid's connector.

Splitter cable 33-1169 [3] connects to P13 on the IOPCB and to the open and close sensor's connector. If the machine is equipped with other add-on options, remove the cable from P13 and connect it to the pigtail cable [4].

Auto Window Activation

Turn on the machine.

Login to the HBC PORTAL.

Download the Auto Window option configuration patch files.

Note: The option files will appear on the configuration download page after the Auto Window service kit has been ordered. If the option does not appear, contact the service department.

Load the option configuration patch file to the control. Refer to the NEXT GENERATION CONTROL - CONFIGURATION FILE - DOWNLOAD/LOAD procedure.

Auto Window Installation and Sensor Alignment

1

Fasten the top [1] and bottom [2] air cylinder mounting brackets using the 4 BHCS [3]. Don't torque down these fasteners until the brackets are aligned with the air cylinder.

Align them so that the bore for in the brackets are concentric with each other.

Place the rubber grommet [4] on the top bracket.

Remove the nut [6] from the air cylinder [5] so that the air cylinder can be inserted through the mounting brackets.

2

Feed the floating end of the air cylinder through the nut [1] and the lift bracket [3]. Tighten the 2 jam nuts [2] and [4] to secure the air cylinder [1] to the window lift bracket [3].

Important: The nut [1] should be left loose at this point. Do not tighten the nut [1] with the cylinder fully extended in the "door closed" position.

Move the lift bracket and cylinder to the "door open" position as shown in the image. Then fully tighten the nut [1].

Note: For Minimill series machines, install the grommet [5] onto the first lift bracket bore, and install the jam nuts on the second bore.

For other machines with only one bore on the lift bracket, install the jam nuts there.

With the window in the "fully open" position (where the lift bracket is just below the top of the enclosure window), install and align the "door fully open" sensor using the alignment method in the steps 3 and 4.

Once that sensor is installed, move the lift bracket all the way to the bottom of the window in the "fully closed" position. Install and align the "door fully closed" sensor using steps 3 and 5 for reference.

3

Clamp Sensor Install:

Loosen the sensor clamp [1] until the opening is wide enough to fit around the cylinder. Place one clamp around the bottom of the cylinder and the other around the top.

Insert sensor [2] in between clamp and cylinder. Tighten the sensor clamp.

Attach two hose fittings [3] to the bottom and top of cylinder.

Connect the gray airline [4] to the bottom hose fitting on the cylinder and connect the yellow airline [5] to the top hose fitting on the cylinder. This line gets filled with air to push the door down.

Secure the yellow airline to the cylinder with a zip tie.

4

Do these steps to adjust the sensor indicating when the Auto Window is opened.. Monitor the DIAGNOSTICS screen at the same time:

  1. Loosen the sensor clamp. Move the sensor and clamp up until AUTO_WINDOW_DOOR_FULLY_OPENED changes to 0.
  2. Slowly move the sensor and clamp up. Find the location where the value is as near as possible to 1, but the value is 0. Another way to find the correct position for the clamp sensor is to slowly move the sensor until just before the red LED on the sensor turns on.
  3. Put a mark on the cylinder to locate the sensor's height at this position.
  4. Repeat Step 1. Repeat Step 2, but move the clamp down. Repeat Step 3.
  5. Move the sensor and clamp to the middle point between the two marks. Tighten the clamp.

5

Do these steps to adjust the sensor indicating when the Auto Window is closed. Monitor the DIAGNOSTICS screen at the same time:

  1. Loosen the sensor clamp. Move the sensor and clamp up until AUTO_WINDOW_DOOR_FULLY_CLOSED changes to 0.
  2. Slowly move the sensor and clamp up. Find the location where the value is as near as possible to 1, but the value is 0. Another way to find the correct position for the clamp sensor is to slowly move the sensor until just before the red LED on the sensor comes on.
  3. Put a mark on the cylinder to locate the sensor's height at this position.
  4. Repeat Step 1. Repeat Step 2, but move the clamp down. Repeat Step 3.
  5. Move the sensor and clamp to the middle point between the two marks. Tighten the clamp.

6

Proximity Sensor Install:

Note: This step is only for auto window kits that use the proximity sensor.

Attach two hose fittings [1] to the bottom and top of the cylinder.

Connect the gray airline [2] to the bottom hose fitting on the cylinder and connect the yellow airline to the top hose fitting on the cylinder.  This line gets filled with air to push the door down.

Secure the yellow airline to the cylinder with a zip tie.

Attach the proximity sensor mount [4] to the enclosure cover [5]. Attach the proximity sensor [3] onto the mount [4].

7

Use a putty knife to remove Sikaflex and separate the original window bracket [1] from the window [3]. Clean bottom of window.

With the lift bracket [2] located in the "door fully open" position, place a bead of sika flex inside the lift bracket to attach to the window.

Slide the window [3] through the top of the enclosure into the lift bracket [2]. Make sure the window is sitting all the way inside the lift bracket.

If the window does not sit flat in the bracket, adjust the alignment of the lift bracket so that it is concentric with the air cylinder mounting brackets installed in the step 1.

Once aligned, fully tighten the BHCS on the mounting brackets.

Important: Make sure to adjust this alignment between the window and lift bracket in the open position.

8

Note: This step is for auto window kits that use proximity sensors.

If proximity sensors are used instead of clamp sensors, bolt trip flag [1] on the side of the window bracket.

Add shims in between window bracket and trip flag to create a 1/16" gap to the proximity sensor.

Make sure trip flag and sensor are on the same side. of the air cylinder.

Auto Window Testing

Verify the auto window feature works properly by doing the following test:

Press [CURRENT COMMANDS] and got to the Devices > Mechanisms tab [1].

Search for "Slider" and then highlight the device [2].

Press [F2] [3] to command the slider window to open.

Go to the I/O tab in DIAGNOSTICS and search for the auto window inputs shown in the image [4]. Make sure that the Auto_Window_Door_Fully_Open switch is 1 when the window is in the open position.

Go back to [CURRENT COMMANDS] and press [F2] [5] again to command the slider window to close.

While the window is running, watch the DIAGNOSTICS screen to verify the auto window inputs trigger the sensors properly [6].

If the inputs are behaving as they should, cycle the window multiple times to ensure no alarms are generated.

Air Hose and Sensor Cable Routing

1

Bolt enclosure cover assembly [1] to the machine's enclosure above the window, securing one cable clamp [2] in the corner.

Important: Move the sensor wire and red airline around to prevent any kinks or rubbing before the enclosure cover is put on.

Attach two remainder cable clamps [3] to enclosure side panel.

Note: See the section below for how to route the cable and air hoses to the CALM cabinet.

2

DM/DT Series:

Route the yellow airline [1] and sensor cable [3] down the cylinder.
