AMO Non-Contact Encoder - Rotary - Replacement (2011 - Oct. 2016)

Introduction

This procedure outlines how to replace the 12V AMO Scale with a 5V AMO Scale on the following rotary trunnions built from 2011 to October 2016:

TR160/-2
TR160Y
TR210
TR310

This procedure applies to the following service kits:

93-3419 AMO 5V NCE SVC KIT TR160/-2 2011-2016
93-3420 AMO 5V NCE SVC KIT TR160Y 2011-2016
93-3421 AMO 5V NCE SVC KIT TR210 2011-2016
93-3422 AMO 5V NCE SVC KIT TR310 2011-2016

You should not do mechanical or electrical machine repairs or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.

Only authorized personnel with the proper training and certification should do this repair procedure.

Removal

For NGC:

Go to the enabled Linear Scale Parameter (5.083, 6.083, or 7.083) and set it to FALSE to disable the scale.

Go to Parameter 5.021 and set it to FALSE to disable the travel limits checker.

For CHC:

Go to Setting 7 and set it to OFF.

Go to Parameter 43 Bit 20 and set the CK TRAVEL LIM to 0.

Go to Parameter 269 bit 0 and set it to OFF to disable the scale.

Set Parameters 128 and 212 to 0.

Remove the interpolation assembly bracket [1].

Rotate the trunnion to 180° to remove the counterbalance [2] and mark which hole the counterbalance was mounted to.

Rotate the trunnion back to 0°.

Remove encoder read head [3] and read head mount [4].

Turn off the machine.

Remove the encoder scale using (4x) M6x25 SHCS (40-0083) evenly spaced.

Turn screws 1/2 a turn evenly until the scale ring [5] is removed.

Once the scale is removed, stone burrs smooth on the scale mount left by SHCS when removing the scale.

For TR310

Remove the counterbalance mount and the scale mount entirely and replace with new parts in kit, 20-5599A [1] & 20-5503A [2].

Replacement

Follow this step for TR160/-2 and TR210, otherwise, skip this step.

Install replacement read head mount [2] using the following hardware:

TR160/-2 / TR210: 2x 10-32 SHCS (40-1645) & 2x washers (45-1737)

Heat replacement scale with a hot plate to no more than 250°F (120°C) for 4 minutes.

When installing the scale on the scale mount, the dot on the scale mount should be just clockwise (to the left) from the read head [1] when installed.

Install read head [2] on read head mount using the following hardware:

2x 8-32 SHCS (40-1801)
2x washers (45-0042)

Using the provided shim from AMO (.006” ±.004), set the gap between the read head and scale.

Rotate the trunnion back to 180° to reinstall the counterbalance in the previously marked location.

Torque the counterbalance bolts to the following:

TR160/-2 / TR210: 50 ft-lbs

Follow this step for TR160Y, otherwise, skip this step.

Print out the stencil at the link below.

TR160Y Template

Line up the stencil [1] to the upper right corner and edges of the driven side of the trunnion.

Mark the hole locations from the stencil onto the trunnion.

Drill and tap 10-32 holes [2] in those locations.

After drilling and tapping, clean the trunnion of any metal chips or fines.

Install replacement read head mount using the following hardware:

TR160Y: 2x 10-32 FHCS (40-1702)

Heat replacement scale with a hot plate to no more than 250°F (120°C) for 4 minutes.

When installing the scale on the scale mount, place a dot [3] on the scale mount. The dot should be just clockwise (to the left) from the read head when installed.

Install the read head on the read head mount [4] using the following hardware:

2x 8-32 SHCS (40-1801)
2x washers (45-0042)

Using the provided shim from AMO (.006” ±.004), set the gap between the read head [5] and scale.

Rotate the trunnion back to 180° to reinstall the counterbalance in the previously marked location.

Torque the counterbalance bolts to the following:

TR160Y: 50 ft-lbs

Follow this step for TR310, otherwise, skip this step.

Install replacement read head mount using the following hardware:

TR310: 2x 10-32 SHCS (40-1645) & 2x washers (45-1737)

Heat replacement scale with a hot plate to no more than 250°F (120°C) for 4 minutes.

When installing the scale on the scale mount, the dot on the scale mount should be just clockwise (to the left) from the read head when installed.

Dial in the run-out of the scale to under .0005”.

Once scale run-out is under .0005”. Install read head on read head mount using the following hardware :

2x 8-32 SHCS (40-1801)
2x washers (45-0042)

Using the provided shim from AMO (.006” ±.004), set the gap between the read head and scale.

Follow this step for all the rotary trunnions

Return the trunnion back to 0° and turn off the machine.

Connect cables 32-10057 [1] and 32-10055B [2] using dielectric grease at the connection.

Replace the existing scale cable with a new scale cable (32-10055B) [2], adapter (32-10057) [1], and J-Box Gasket (57-4133A) [3] using the following hardware:

4x 8-32 BHCS (40-1677) [4]
4x washers (49-4110 [4]

Replace the current sheet metal scale cable cover with a new sheet metal scale cable cover.

Replace necessary gaskets (57-4725A & 57-4726A) to the enclosure.

Install the following hardware and straps in the locations shown:

[1] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-2040)
[2] a velcro cable tie (70-0022)
[3] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-1334)
[4] a velcro cable tie (70-0022) and nylon cable tie (70-0020)
[5] a velcro cable tie (70-0022)
[6] a cable clamp (59-1334)

Replace necessary gaskets (57-0240A & 57-0241B) to the enclosure.

Install the following hardware and straps in the locations shown:

[1] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-2040)
[2] a velcro cable tie (70-0022)
[3] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-1334)
[4] a cable clamp (59-1334)
[5] a cable clamp (59-2040)
[6] a cable clamp (59-2040)

Install the following hardware and straps in the locations shown:

Replace necessary gaskets (57-4643A & 57-4644A) to the enclosure.

Install the following hardware and straps in the locations shown:

[1] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-2040)
[2] a velcro cable tie (70-0022)
[3] a standoff (20-5629), a SHCS (40-1760), and a cable clamp (59-1334)
[4] a cable clamp (59-2040)

Verification

For NGC:

Turn on the machine.

Set the Linear Scale Parameter (5.083, 6.083, or 7.083) to TRUE to enable the scale.

Set Parameter 5.021 to TRUE to enable the travel limit checker.

Cycle power and zero return the axes.

Follow the Tilting Platter - Offset Adjustment procedure.

Run the trunnion to confirm the scale is working properly.

For CHC:

Turn on the machine.

Set Parameter 43 Bit 20 to 1 to enable the travel limit checker.

Set Parameter 269 Bit 0 to 1 to enable the scale.

Cycle power and zero return the axes.

Follow the Tilting Platter - Offset Adjustment procedure.

Go to Setting 7 and turn it ON.

Run the trunnion to confirm the scale is working properly.
