Introduction

Bearingless TSC Union [1]

Factory installed bearingless TSC unions for both 300, 1000, and 1K psi systems are assembled with 85 psi regulators. The internal piston seal on these unions is configured differently. The 300 psi system has the force of a 35 psi regulator and the 1000/1K psi system has the force of an 85 psi regulator. The replacement union ships with a 35 psi regulator. It can be configured to supply the 85 PSI needed for the 1000/1K psi systems as shown in this procedure.

Perform this procedure for these TSC configurations:

  • TSC 300 psi
  • TSC 1000 psi (This configuration has the coolant-pump cart.)
  • TSC 1K psi

 Note: The images in this document show TSC 1000 and 1K psi.

Parts Required

COOLANT UNION, BEARINGLESS ASSEMBLY 50 TAPER 300/1000 PSI

Tools Required

  • Spindle Lock Tool (T-2080)
  • Red-I Grease
  • Dial Indicator (that can measure 0.0001") with Magnetic Base

50-Taper - Belt-Drive - TSC Ready - Bearingless TSC Union - Replacement - VMC

1

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

 Danger: If the vector drive voltage indicator light is on, do not touch the electrical components. The high voltage in the control cabinet can kill you. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the vector drive to go off completely.

Close the primary air valve. Pull the ring on the bleed valve in the air manifold. Wait until all air pressure is released.

Look at the manifold pressure gauge. Make sure that the air pressure is 0 psi.

Remove the spindle head covers.

Install the spindle lock tool (T-2080) onto the spindle.

2

Remove and record the location of these parts from the bearingless TSC union [6]:

  • high-pressure braided hose [1]
  • 20' (6096 mm) 1/4" gray tube [2]
  • 5' (1524 mm) 1/4" gray tube [3]
  • clamp for the 3/8" black hose [4]
  • 3/8" black hose [5]

Remove these parts from the TSC adapter:

  • (4) 10-32 x 3/4" socket-head cap screws (SHCS) [7]
  • bearingless TSC union [6]

3

Use a 1" deep socket [1] to loosen the extension tube assembly. Turn the assembly clockwise to loosen it.

Remove the extension tube assembly [2]. Turn the assembly clockwise to loosen it.

Remove the shaft [3] for the extension tube assembly. Turn the shaft clockwise to loosen it.

4

Perform this step only for TSC 1000 or 1K psi to bypass the 35 psi regulator.

Find the replacement bearingless TSC union [A].

Remove the regulator plug [1] from the regulator port.

Remove the fitting assembly [2] from the regulator port with an arrow.

 Note: The mark on the regulator port can be different than this illustration.

Install the plug [1] into the regulator port with an arrow.

Install the fitting assembly [2] into the open regulator port.

5

To install the extension tube assembly [2]:

  • Apply Red-I grease to the o-ring of the shaft [1] and to the assembly [2].
  • Assemble the shaft [1] to the extension tube assembly [2].
  • Put the assembly [2] through the TSC adapter.

 Note: Make sure the spring is in the adapter.

  • Turn the assembly [2] counterclockwise to tighten it. Use the 1" (25 mm) deep socket [3].
  • Torque the assembly [2] to 35 ft-lb (47.4 Nm).
  • Remove the spindle lock tool.
  • Use the dial indicator to measure the total indicated runout (TIR) of the shaft [2].

 Note: The TIR must be less than 0.001" (0.025 mm). If the TIR is more than 0.001" (0.025mm), contact Haas service.

Use a stone on the surface of the TSC adapter.

6

Install these parts on the TSC adapter:

  • replacement bearingless TSC union [1]
  • (4) 10-32 x 3/4" socket-head cap screws (SHCS) [2]

Install these parts on the repalcement bearingless TSC union [1]:

  • high-pressure braided hose [3]
  • 20' (6096 mm) 1/4" gray tube [4]
  • 5' (1524 mm) 1/4" gray tube [5]
  • clamp for the 3/8" black hose [6]
  • 3/8" black hose [7]

CHC - TSC - 300 and 1K PSA - Test

1

Operate this code in MDI mode:

M59 P1148 ;

G04 P5.0 ;

M69 P1148 ;

G04 P2.0 ;

M99 ;

P1148 is for inline spindles.

For HS machines, use P1124 and not P1148.

For belt-drive spindles, use P1120 and not P1148.

If the machine has a bearingless TSC union, it moves up and down at 7-second intervals. The up and down movement is small.

The illustration shows the up and down movements for 40-taper [1], 40-taper (CALM) [2], and 50-taper [3] machines.

2

Put a TSC toolholder [1] in the spindle. Push [AUX CLNT] to start the TSC.

Correct operation is as follows:

  1. Coolant flows correctly from the TSC tool holder.
  2. A few drops flow from the vacuum-generator hose [2].

Push [RESET].

NGC - TSC - 300 and 1K PSI - Test

Operate this code in MDI:

M59 P26 ;

G04 P5.0 ;

M69 P26 ;

G04 P2.0 ;

M99 ;

P26 is for inline spindles.

For belt-drive spindles, use P35 and not P26.

The bearingless TSC union moves up and down at 7-second intervals.
