Bijur - Mechanical - Oil Pump - (1) Drip Sight Glass - Installation

Applies to machines without (CALM) built before: March, 2013

Introduction

This procedure tells you how to:

  1. Install (1) drip-sight glass assembly.
  2. Install the oil lubrication tube that goes to the spindle.

Perform this procedure when you replace a spindle that has (1) lubrication port with spindle that has (1) lubrication ports.

For mills that have these components:

  1. The machine has a Bijur mechanical oil pump assembly.
  2. The oil pump assembly does not have a sight glass.
  3. The air and lubrication panel is under the enclosure.
  • For vertical mills use: P/N 93-2191 OIL SIGHT GLASS KIT VMC, BIJUR PUMP
  • For horizontal mills use: P/N 93-2096 OIL SIGHT GLASS KIT, HMC, BIJUR PUMP

Spindle - Oil Lubrication Tube - Installation

Press [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Close the primary air valve. This stops the air supply to the machine.

This step shows a VMC.

Disconnect the spindle lubrication tube from the fitting on the spindle.

Install the new lubrication tube from the spindle to the drip-sight glass.

Use the old tube [1] as a "fish tape" to pull the new tube [2] through the machine.

 Note: The illustration shows a minimum lubrication oil pump. The procedure for a Bijur mechanical oil pump is the same.

This step shows a HMC.

Disconnect the spindle lubrication tube from the fitting on the spindle.

Install the new lubrication tube from the spindle to the drip-sight glass.

Use the old tube [1] as a "fish tape" to pull the new tube [2] through the machine.

 Note: The illustration shows a minimum lubrication oil pump. The procedure for a Bijur mechanical oil pump is the same.

Remove the (2) cable tray retaining screws.

Remove the cable tray.

 Note: The air and lubrication lines are removed from the image for clarity.

Disconnect all of the air and lubrication tubes from the main manifold assembly.

Disconnect the cable for the spindle air solenoid from the connector bracket.

This bracket is on the rear of the main manifold panel.

Remove the (2) screws from the front of the main regulator bracket.

Remove the main manifold assembly.

Turn the spindle air manifold counterclockwise.

Remove and discard the spindle air manifold assembly.

Install the sight glass assembly to the rear-facing port of the air-lubrication manifold regulator.

Turn the sight glass assembly clockwise to tighten it.

 Note: Tighten the sight glass so that it is in a vertical position when you attach the manifold assembly to the support panel.

Install the air-lubrication manifold regulator to the air-lubrication support panel.

Remove the tee fitting [1].

Install the 5-way manifold [2]. Use the (1) screw [3].

Connect the tube from the spindle oil pump [4] to the 5-way manifold.

Connect the axis lubrication tubes [5] to the 5-way manifold.

Connect the oil tube [6] from the 5-way manifold to the drip-sight glass fitting [7].

For HMCs only: Connect the tube for spindle "purge" air [8].

Connect the cable for the spindle air solenoid at the connector bracket.

Remove the red plug from the drip-sight glass fitting [1].

Connect the oil lubrication tube [2] to the fitting [3] at the bottom of the drip-sight glass assembly.

 Note: Cut the tubes shorter if needed to make sure the tubes are not crushed or kinked.

Fill the reservoir to the  MAX fill line [1].

 Note: To prevent build up of contamination, use Mobil SHC 625, Mobil 1 5W-20, or Mobil 1 10W-30. Do not use Mobil Vactra #2.

When you use Vactra #2, contamination ("sludge") collects in the reservoir. This causes the pump assembly to become clogged.

You must fill the reservoir tank to the  MAX fill line [1] each time you fill the tank. This makes sure the dip trough [2] is full of oil. This lubricates the drive and worm gears [3] of the pump.

Attach the cable tray under the main manifold assembly with (2) retaining screws.

Install the air/lube cover panel.

Attach the cable tray under the main manifold assembly with (2) retaining screws.

Remove the plug on the top of the tee on the drip-sight glass assembly.

Make sure that the air to the spindle is off.

Pull up on the pump handle [1]. This manually operates the oil pump.

Operate the pump until you see oil come out of the tee fitting [2] on the top of the drip-sight glass. This removes all of the air from the new oil line.

Install the plug on the drip-sight glass assembly.

Manually operate the oil pump.

Watch for oil to drip from the tube inside the drip-sight glass.

Manually operate the oil pump until you count 10 or more drops of oil in the drip-sight glass.

Re-connect all of the tubes and electrical cables.

Set the main circuit breaker to the ON position.

Turn the machine air supply on.

Press [POWER ON].

In MDI mode, command the spindle to run at a low speed, for example, 5 RPM.

Set the air regulator [1] at the drip-sight glass to 10 psi (0.7 bar) [2].

Count the number of oil drops that fall through the drip-sight glass during a normal pump cycle.

  • 6 -10 drops per cycle in the drip-sight glass is the correct flow rate.
  • If you count less than 6 drops refer to the  Bijur Mechanical - Oil Pump - Axis - Timed Pressure Test.
  • If you count more than 10 drops adjust the air regulator at the drip-sight glass to 15 psi (1.0 bar).
    • The increase in pressure reduces the number of drops.
    • Increase the pressure until no more than 10 drops are produced per pump cycle.
    • Do not exceed 20 psi (1.4 bar) at the drip-sight glass air regulator.

When the plunger on the oil pump assembly drops, oil is pumped into the top of the drip-sight glass.

The oil slowly drips out, one drop at a time.

Each drop is clearly visible. Each cycle produces (6-10) drops of oil per drip-sight glass.

The oil falls into the stream of air [1] from the spindle air solenoid.

The oil droplets [2] are carried up the spindle air and oil tube to lubricate the spindle bearings.
