Introduction

Machine Compatibility
  • VMC/HMC with TSC 300, 1000, or 1k
  • VMC/HMC with Yaskawa spindle motors
  • DT/DM with TSC 300, 1000, or 1k
Document Applies to these Parts:
  • 93-2778, TSC UNION ASSY COMP 40T VF RETROFIT
  • 93-2279 TSC UNION ASSY COMP DT/DM RETROFIT SKIT
Tools Required:
  • Spindle Lock Tool (T-1635)
  • Dial Indicator (that can measure 0.0001") with Magnetic Base
  • Red-I Grease
  • Crows foot wrench
  • 99-0698 TSC union alignment tool

Bearing TSC Union to Compensating TSC Union - Upgrade - 40-Taper

1

Push [POWER OFF].

Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Remove the spindle head covers.

Install the spindle lock tool (T-1635) onto the spindle.

2

Disconnect the vacuum-drain hose [1]. Remove the high-pressure braided hose [2] from the check-valve assembly [3]. Using the crows foot wrench turn the bearing union hex-drive [4] clockwise to remove it.

Clean the motor-shaft threads. Apply Red-I grease to the o-ring and to the outer surface of the compensating union shaft [5].  Install the shaft [5] onto the motor. The shaft [5] has left-handed threads. Torque the shaft [5] to 30 ft-lb (41 Nm).

Remove the spindle lock tool.

Use the dial indicator [3] to measure the total indicated runout (TIR) of the shaft [2] and the top carbide [4].

The radial [3] and axial [4] TIR must be less than .0005''.  If the TIR exceeds this value, shim the TSC shaft.

3

To shim the TSC shaft:

Measure the radial runout [1].

Mark the high spot with a pen [2].

Loosen the TSC shaft enough to create a gap between the TSC shaft and the motor shaft.

If the radial runout is than .0015'' use .0005'' shim stock.

If the radial runout is greater than .0015'' use .001'' shim stock.

Insert the shim at the marked location [3] and torque the TSC shaft to 30 ft-lb.

Trim away the excess shim stock.

4

After shimming the TSC shaft:

Measure radial runout [1].  It must not exceed .0005''.

Measure axial runout [2].  It must not exceed .0005''.

If shaft runout cannot be corrected with shims contact Haas service.

5

For machines with a CALM:

  1. Locate the spindle solenoid. Remove the quick connect, and orifice [1].
  2. Install the T fitting , orifice , and quick connect [2] (parts B,C,& D) as illustrated. Install the removed components [1] on top of the T fitting.
  3. Rout the new 5/32 clear hose from the new fitting on the spindle solenoid to the TSC union in the spindle head.
  4. Unplug the power to the TSC/TAB Union Solenoid. Unplug and cut off the grey hose in the CALM panel and discard it.

For machines without a CALM:

  1. Locate the spindle air supply.
  2. Install the T fitting , orifice , and quick connect to create a T juction in the spindle air supply line.
  3. Rout the new 5/32 clear hose from the new T junction to the TSC union in the spindle head.

6

Install the compensating union with the mounting bolts [1] loose and insert the aligment tool [2] through the fitting on the top of the coolant union to align it with the motor shaft.

Turn the motor by hand to make sure the shaft is not rubbing as you tighten the union bolts. Torque the bolts to 12 ft-lbs (16 Nm)

Remove the alignment tool.

Run the spindle motor at 100 RPM and verify the union is not rubbing on the shaft.

7

Insert a screw driver [1] into the top JIC fitting [2] until you feel it contact the piston [3].

Note: The top cover has been removed in this image to illustrate the piston. Do not disassemble the union.

Lightly press downwards until you feel the piston [3] contact the shaft [4] to eliminate the gap [5]. The piston will move about 0.040".

Install the replacement TSC hose from the check valve to the union. Install the new 5/32 clear hose from the spindle solenoid to the union. Connect the drain hose to the union.

TSC Compensating Union - Test

1

With no tool in the spindle, command TSC.

Check that a steady stream [1] of coolant comes out of the spindle.

Check the amount of coolant coming out of the drain tube. There should be no coolant draining but a steady drip [2] is acceptable.

2

Run TSC with the spindle at 1000 RPM.  Slowly ramp the speeds up to the maximum spindle RPM.

The union may make ringing noises as the carbide wears in. This noise should diminish within minutes of running for the first time. The noise may return briefly each time the speed or pressure is increased.

Check that a steady stream [1] of coolant comes out of the spindle.

Check the amount of coolant coming out of the drain tube. There should be no coolant draining but a steady drip [2] is acceptable.

3

Insert a TSC tool with a small orifice [1] in the spindle, run TSC with the spindle at 1000 RPM. Slowly ramp the spindle speeds up to the maximum RPM.

Check that the amount of coolant coming out of the drain tube is not more than a steady drip [2].

Compensating TSC Union Troubleshooting

Symptom Possible Cause Corrective Action
A large flow of coolant comes out of the drain when the TSC is turned on for the first time. The union piston is not seated. Turn on TSC again with a TSC tool in the spindle and then quickly turn it off. The back pressure, or the TSC Purge cycle will likely push the piston down. Or, disconnect the hydraulic hose from the top of the union and use a screwdriver to manually seat the piston.
The amount of coolant flow from the drain tube is more than a few drops. Runout on the carbide tip or damage to the piston cup seal Check the motor shaft for runout. Inspect the piston cup seal.
The union is leaking coolant. Leaky drain tube or no air supply to the union. The drain tube connection is not watertight and requires glue to seal it during union assembly, make sure the hose clamp is tight. Check the solenoid and hose for air supply problems.
The union makes a high pitch ringing noise when running TSC that does not go away after a few minutes of running. TSC union alignment, or shaft runout. Check the motor shaft for runout. Inspect the piston cup seal. Re-align the union with no hoses connected.
The union makes a high pitch ringing noise when running TAB that does not go away after a few minutes of running. Excessive back pressure. Try using a tool with larger orifices to reduce back pressure or try turning on TSC briefly to lubricate the seals.
